Skin vision can be found in many invertebrates such as earthworms, jellyfish and octopuses using light-sensitive rod cells in the skin. It enables optical perception and colorimetric responses, providing intriguing capabilities that human skin does not have. We developed a bioinspired wireless, battery-free, artificial skin vision (ASV) device consisting of flexible optical and optoelectronic components which essentially mimic the hierarchical structures and biological functions of rod cells in a skin-like configuration for light sensing and signal processing. The ASV device showed sensitive colorimetric responses to input stimulus, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and demonstrated a capacity for in situ quantitative analysis of biomarkers in sweat through alternative colorimetric light filters. Multiple ASVs together created a body area network with a collection of wireless sensors that can work in parallel to acquire multidimensional human physiological signals and predict fitness variations using a specified deep learning neural network. Our system has potential applications in biomimetic engineering, physiological monitoring and intelligent personalized diagnostics.

There are 2.2 million people blind globally which was stated, by WHO. Blind stick helps visually impaired to navigate without any disturbance. In this proposed system our main aim is to make the lives of blind people easier and lead them to an independent lifestyle. Here, for our smart cane we have used ultrasonic sensor foe obstacle detection and avoidance, water sensor for detection of water, accelerometer for fall detection, df mini player for voice messages and GSM to send an SMS to the caretaker in case of emergency or fall. This prototype is successfully tested and gives satisfactory results in case of obstacle detection. In future, we can overcome the limitations and redesign the prototype for better use with more advanced technology.

We present Apollo, a self-powered wireless biochemical system that is wearable and can continuously monitor personal health states. It has three key enablers. First, we design an ultra-low-power Bluetooth backscatter module, which can effectively take BLE signals as excitations and transmit sensor data at high data rates to smartphones. Further, at the core of self-power management is a novel multi-source harvester that can transform RF, light, and thermal energies into electrical energy. Moreover, we introduce a biochemical sensor array that can accurately measure sweat metabolites and *** prototype Apollo on a compactly integrated flexible PCB using all commercial off-the-shelf components. Through extensive experiments and field studies, we show that it is able to measure the glucose level in sweat within 5% error rate while consuming 5.8 mW for sensing and 720 pJ/bit for wireless transmissions. This translates to over 1700x lower power than standard electrochemical workstations, and 26x lower power than existing commercial BLE chipsets. We believe Apollo marks an important step towards the dream of ubiquitous healthcare for everyone as it provides a highly convenient, self-managed, and fully integrated way for health monitoring.

Diffuse optical tomography is an emerging biomedical imaging technique, due to its numerous advantages, such as low cost and non-ionizing radiation. In this work, we have developed a very simple setup, which included a single source - photodiode (SP) pair for scanning a sample of water with diluted Intralipid, simulating a biological tissue. LEDs emitting at 470, 525 and 624 nm, as well as a 650 nm Fabry Perot laser, were used as light sources. Scattered light from the sample was detected by the photodiode placed next to the LED. The SP distance could vary and the phantom could be scanned by moving the SP pair in precise, small and automated steps without any intervention during the measurements. Therefore, we obtained measurements from multiple locations on the sample, with just one SP pair. The presented experimental system verified the feasibility of deploying extremely low cost devices for detection and imaging absorbing objects of 1 cm height, placed inside a scattering medium. Maximum depth detection was 2.5 cm. As expected, the quality of the obtained images was degrading, as the object's depth or the scanning step was increasing. Additionally, we developed Monte Carlo simulations of the setup, which achieved good agreement with the experimental results. We also conducted another set of simulations, studying the depth sensitivity of a single static SP pair considering a scattering medium similar to the experimental phantom with and without object. We observed that the depth sensitivity increases as the source wavelength increases from 450 nm to 650 nm.

Exoskeleton suit is one of the technological aids to bring benefits to disability and rehabilitation and industrial worker, especially of manually material handling at the factory floor. The repetitive motion during the operation caused different types of injuries. physiological assessment towards industrial exoskeleton suit is getting the attention in order the suit is truly able to aid the workers in the challenging working environment. This paper presents a developed exoskeleton suit to allow users to operate it regardless the body size or weight with a substantial comfortable level. The testing result revealed the developed suit not only fulfills the physiological aspect assessment, but the load lifting and EMG sensor signal capturing performance were consistent as well. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) result also verified the mechanical design is below the yield stress during load lifting operation.

The digital health field has seen a surge in product development over the last decade, with product introductions ranging from wrist monitors, epidermal electronics, electronic pills and smart garments, much of these precipitated through the commercialisation and commoditisation of sensor technology. The emergence of wearable technology has recently garnered heightened interest by physicians and the general public. The convenient use of wireless technology to track and monitor physiological parameters, such as heart rate, distance, sleep and stress, has emerged to become relevant to patient care and human performance assessment. However, collecting data is not enough to inform clinical decision-making. It is essential to translate the acquired data into information relevant to clinicians. Our experiences tell us that team competencies must mirror the interdisciplinary technology itself. Thus, an interdisciplinary team blending expertise from engineering, medicine, and nursing is believed to be essential in translating wearable technology into the field. This review discusses the application of wearable sensors to monitor human performance assessment in domains necessitating accurate, reliable, and timely transmission of acquired bio-metric and bio-vital data. A key result disseminating from our investigations is the need to develop predictive models based off of the data acquired from wearable devices to necessitate the development of athlete-centred treatment plans to expedite the return-to-play time and to maximise performance. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Nowadays, the integration of smart sensors in wearable affective computing systems aims to improve and create applications based on conventional sensing technology. The inclusion of this type of sensors is key in high sensing-demanding applications, such as those based on affective computing. This sensing integration must be quantitatively supported by metrics that directly affect performance, such as processing time, memory usage, and measurement accuracy. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of a specific smart sensor integration in a wearable constrained device from an embedded perspective. The authors performed this implementation by considering BINDI, which is a wearable device developed by the UC3M4Safety research group to prevent gender violence situations. BINDI monitors user physiological and physical variables to detect fear through artificial intelligence algorithms. Along with other sensors, this device incorporates an electroDermal activity (EDA) sensor. This type of sensor was proven to be a valuable source of information directly related to the autonomous nervous system (ANS) activation, which regulates physiological responses in stress and relaxed affective states. In the initial version of Binode, which was validated in different experiments with different volunteers, the EDA sensor is based on a DC measurement schema. However, AC measurement EDA circuitry is known to provide a higher amount of information. Thus, this work presents a detailed comparison between the current EDA sensor and a specific AC smart EDA sensor for a future version of BINDI.
