In 1991 the Honeywell Technology Center began the development of large area 2D microemitter arrays for IR scene projection. Since then, 5 different types of 512x512 or larger arrays have been fabricated, all in current use. This paper will review the status, properties, and applications of these arrays. Pixel and array improvements which will lead to ultralow power consumption, very high performance, very fast 1024 square arrays are under development. A number of these efforts are described.

We present the design and fabrication of a novel refractometric transducer, where all optoelectronic components (lasers, waveguides, modulators, detectors and sensor pads) are monolithically integrated on a 5 x 0.15 mm(2) chip and report on its performance as a refractometer in a flow-through system.

The recent commercial availability of Field Programmable Analog arrays (FPAAs) is leading designers of high reliability space and ground support systems to consider how these devices can enable new applications. They hold promise for analog systems that require reactive evolvability such as those that correct defective mechanical deployments., They are also suited to evolving circuits, which change with temporary or degenerative electrical conditions such as those associated with power systems during specific,periods of orbit in space flight and with the effects of aging on electronic components. FPAA's are seen as a key enabler to a system in development that will enable circuit development in a hardware environment that can be programmed and tailored for a given system's electrical input/output/load environment.

As part of the Advanced Targeting FLIR (ATFLIR) program for the United states Navy, Raytheon has designed and developed a compact and rugged diode-pumped solid-state laser for high-altitude airborne targeting systems. This laser is based on the relatively mature Nd:YAG technology. In the laser pump head, 168 diode bars are stacked into 24 arrays, which, in turn, are packed around the laser rod to provide 4-sided optical pumping. These standard 20 degrees C operating temperature diode bars and the laser rod are conductively cooled to fins located in the air flow circulating in the pod housing. The laser operates with very low variation in output energy or beam divergence at laser pulse rates from 8 to 20 Hertz and ambient temperatures from -54 to +71 degrees C. The optical to optical efficiency of the pump head is better than 25%. Eye safe laser wavelengths are achieved thorough the use of an Optical Parametric Oscillator. This compact and rugged diode-pumped solid-state laser with proven performance and reliability on high altitude aircrafts can also be modified to serve as transmitters for a variety of airborne laser remote sensing applications. It also has the potential to serve as laser transmitters for spaceborne applications with some design changes and space qualifications.

The intent of this investigation is to replace the low fill factor visible sensor of a Cellular Neural Network (CNN) processor with an InGaAs Focal Plane Array (FPA) using both bump bonding and epitaxial layer transfer techniques for use in the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) interceptor seekers. The goal is to fabricate a massively parallel digital processor with a local as well as a global interconnect architecture. Currently, this unique CNN processor is capable of processing a target scene in excess of 10,000 frames per second with its visible sensor. What makes the CNN processor so unique is that each processing element includes memory, local data storage, local and global communication devices and a visible sensor supported by a programmable analog or digital computer program.

High Power Laser Diodes (HPLD) are increasingly used in different fields of applications such as Scientific, Industrial, Medical and Defense. Our significant performances improvements (especially in peak power, divergence and efficiency) and a reproducible manufacturing process have led to reliable, highly robust components. For industrial applications these devices are used predominantly for pumping of solidstate lasers. Due to the drastically falling price per watt they are more and more replacing flash lamps as pump sources. Their compact size and high reliability make diode laser arrays ideally suited to this demanding market. For Scientific applications, the brightness as well as the cost are the two main drivers. In order to respond to this demand, QLD has focused its development on very high peak power bars associated with very high E/O efficiency. The level of energy QLD is achieving now has also pushed us to develop a power supply driver able to operate such diodes at up to 1000A under 100V.

The 64 x 64 array is sensitive to photon densities as low as 8 x 106 photons/cm(2) with 64-point averaging and, through a differential pixel design, has a measured impulse response of better than 800 ps. applications include both active microarrays and high-frame-rate imagers for fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy.
