solid-state photomultipliers (SSPM) are photodetectors composed of avalanche photodiode pixel arrays operating in Geiger mode (biased above diode breakdown voltage). They are built using CMOS technology and can be used in a variety of applications in high energy and nuclear physics, medical imaging and homeland security related areas. The high gain and low cost associated with the SSPM makes it an attractive alternative to existing photodetectors such as the photomultiplier tube (PMT). The capability of integrating CMOS on-chip readout circuitry on the same substrate as the SSPM also provides a compact and low-power-consumption solution to photodetector applications with stringent area and power requirements. The optical performance of the SSPM, specifically the detection and quantum efficiencies, can depend on the geometry and the doping profile associated with each photodiode pixel. The noise associated with the SSPM not only includes dark noise from each pixel, but also consists of excess noise terms due to after pulsing and inter-pixel cross talk. The magnitude of the excess noise terms can depend on biasing conditions, temperature, as well as pixel and inter-pixel dimensions. We present the optical and noise performance of SSPMs fabricated in a conventional CMOS process, and demonstrate the dependence of the SSPM performance on pixel/inter-pixel geometry, doping profile, temperature, as well as bias conditions. The continuing development of CMOS SSPM technology demonstrated here shows that low cost and high performance solid state photodetectors are viable solutions for many existing and future optical detection applications.

sensor arrays have evolved as powerful approaches for providing detection and discrimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as required across numerous analytical applications. Such systems typically comprise a number of cross reactive sensor elements, which generate analyte specific response patterns upon exposure to VOCs, and are known as multisensor arrays. When evaluated using statistical methods, these response patterns facilitate classification of VOCs. As an alternative, a single dynamically operated sensor could also be used to generate analyte specific response patterns. This approach is known as a virtual sensor array (VSA) and can exhibit significant advantages when compared to MSAs. Some advantages include lower power consumption, sensor drift, material cost, and experimental preparatory time. Furthermore, several dynamically operated sensors could be used in tandem (using the MSA and VSA scheme in a complementary fashion) to fabricate virtual multisensor arrays (V-MSAs). Such systems would exhibit greater data density than either the MSA or VSA, and are promising for samples that are particularly challenging to discriminate. Among the various systems utilized for VOC discrimination, sorption based systems hold considerable promise because they are simple and inexpensive yet highly effective. This dissertation is focused on the development of array sensing schemes using ionic liquids (ILs), a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS), and binary blends of either IL or GUMBOS with polymer as recognition elements and the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) as the transducer. Towards this end, ILs, which are defined as organic salts with melting points below 100 °C, and group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) which extend the melting range of ILs to 250 °C to encompass similar solid phase salts, were used to design the first examples of QCM based VSAs, and V-MSAs, for pure VOC and complex mixture analyses. We present a fiber Bragg grating sensor design that provides an inherently athermal response to a transverse applied load. The active element of the sensor is formed from two fibers helically wound around a common axis each containing an FBG element. The helical winding of the fibers is positioned within the transducer so that the FBG elements are coincident and located at the point where the axes of the fibers are in the orthogonal plane to the base of the sensor. An applied load acting on the sensor deflects the fibers sideways so that the upper FBG is compressed and the lower FBG is stretched causing a differential change in the Bragg wavelengths of each element. For small loads, the differential change in wavelength is linearly proportional to the applied force. A change in temperature causes identical change in Bragg wavelength on both FBG elements and therefore does not affect the differential change caused by the applied load. Using this design we have reduced the temperature dependence of our FBG sensors from similar to 13 pm per degrees C to a variation of less than 0.25 pm over a temperature range of 20 - 60 degrees C, with the residual temperature dependence being largely made up of temperature variations in the solid state spectrometer used to acquire data. These sensors are ideally suited for forming sensing arrays for monitoring in-vivo pressures and forces where fluctuations in temperature are unavoidable, and have been used successfully for monitoring the pressure induced beneath compression bandages.

Summary form only given. Quantum well heterojunction laser diodes were characterized in unmounted form for power output. Following the test, multidiode arrays were fabricated via mounting the bars p-side down with hard solder to a substrate. Initially, light output on a watts/diode basis was observed to have decreased. Extensive laser bar processing development effort and assembly process refinement yielded laser diode arrays operating at power output levels consistent with unmounted individual diodes. The optimized arrays were then treated as building blocks to a larger array and were tested at a constant 1% duty cycle with pulse widths being varied from 1 to 200 mu s. Thermal effects were addressed. The resulting arrays are shown to be capable of operating at conditions suitable for pumping solid-state lasers.

In the recent past we have observed many technological revolutions, including the transition from the analog world into its digital counterpart and from centralized wired solutions to distributed and pervasive wireless systems. In particular, the advent of low-cost and low-power transceivers, together with the development of compact-size and open standard stacks, have made possible Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs), largely adopted for both home/office and industrial monitoring applications. The nowadays ambitious goal is to sample, collect and analyze every piece of information around us, in order to improve production efficiency and ensure optimal resource consumption. The "Internet of Things" (IoT), i.e. the capability of connecting every possible device to the World Wide Web, is the practical answer to this request. The very large amount of information that is consequently generated could be profitably handled using "cloud" services, i.e. flexible and powerful hardware/software frameworks capable to deliver computing as a service. The aim of this work is to resume pros and cons of well-accepted WSN technologies, suggesting their possible extension towards already available cloud services. (C) 2014 The Authors. It is shown that a new type of monolithic pressure sensor for high-pressure operation can be developed using the specific properties of deep impurity states (so-called DX centers) in III-V semiconducting compounds. Due to the large intrinsic sensitivity of these tapping levels to hydrostatic pressure, all mechanical problems related to the use of a diaphragm at high pressure can be avoided. This approach is also based on the possibilities offered by band gap engineering: the development of very clean and well-controlled epitaxial growth techniques (molecular beam epitaxy, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition) opens new opportunities for measuring device applications. Particular attention is given to GaAlAs solid-state pressure sensors (passive 3-D sensors and active 2-D sensors).

Although the rapid development of 2-D focal plane arrays of thermal infrared (IR) detectors has led to remarkable progress in uncooled IR imaging technology, a major limitation of these sensors is the lack of true on-chip spectral discrimination. Multi-spectral detection capabilities enable rapid, efficient and multi-dimensional scene interpretation that is especially beneficial to advanced IR imaging systems for early threat warning and target recognition applications. We propose a novel design for a monolithic micromachined array of bolometric detectors capable of multi-spectral imaging in the long-wave IR (7-14 mu m) region. The central ingredient of this approach is to employ planar multi-mode antenna structures to efficiently couple incident electromagnetic radiation to a microbolometeric sensing element that is much smaller than the IR wavelength. The wavelength selectivity of such an antenna-coupled detector can be tuned by optimizing its multiple geometric parameters. We present a planar microbolometer design that can accomplish 3-color LWIR imaging with no moving parts analogous to solid-state color videography in the visible region. The proposed effort targets applications of uncooled color IR imaging where the benefits in space, power, weight and complexity will have a significant impact.

We present the development of silicon monolithic arrays of 60 photon-counters (SPADA, Single-Photon Avalanche Diode Array) for the visible. The SPADA system is suitable for state-of-the-art Adaptive Optics operations and Fast Transient image acquisitions, at quite a fraction of the current cost of imaging arrays. The fabricated solid-state photon counters are rugged, easy to be integrated in the optical system. They are free from readout noise and provide very fast frame-rates (>10kHz, for visible corrections) and nanosecond electronic gating (for ranging the up-going laser beam). The detection head has been integrated into an optomechanical system suitable for alignment and focusing in available astrophysics telescopes. The detection electronics includes an integrated Active Quenching Circuits for each pixel of the array. The real-time data processing board is implemented into FPGA and DSP and is configurable for dealing with different applications: the extraction of the curvature wavefront for AO applications, and the acquisition and processing of two-dimensional images with fast frame rate. A remote host computer controls all the SPADA blocks and uploads the processed information and images. We report the optical and electrical characterization of the detectors and the associated electronics.
