There is a growing need in scientific and industrial applications for dual-mode, passive and active 2D and 3D LADAR imaging methods. To fill this need, solid-state, single photon sensitive silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) detector arrays offer high sensitivity and the possibility to operate with wide dynamic range in dual linear and Geiger-mode for passive and active imaging. To support the fabrication of large scale, high quantum efficiency and high resolution silicon avalanche photodiode arrays and other advanced solid-state optoelectronics, a novel, high transmittance, back-illuminated silicon-on-sapphire substrate has been developed incorporating a single crystal, epitaxially grown aluminum nitride (AlN) antireflective layer between silicon and R-plane sapphire, that provides refractive index matching to improve the optical transmittance into silicon from sapphire. A one quarter wavelength magnesium fluoride antireflective layer deposited on the back-side of the sapphire improves optical transmittance from the ambient into the sapphire. The magnesium fluoride plane of the Si-(AlN)-sapphire substrate is bonded to a fused silica wafer that provides mechanical support, allowing the sapphire to be thinned below 25 micrometers to improve back-illuminated optical transmittance, while suppressing indirect optical crosstalk from APD emitted light undergoing reflections in the sapphire, to enable high quantum efficiency and high resolution detector arrays.

Similar to transistors, the size of MEMS components is continuously shrinking, progressing from MicroElectroMechanical Systems to NanoElectroMechanical Systems (NEMS). Indeed, NEMS are emerging as a new field of interest because their submicron dimensions make them converge towards CMOS fabrication processes. They have specific advantages such as fast response time and high detection sensitivity when used as a resonant sensor [1]. From the application point of view, NEMS interact "naturally" with the nanoscale world and can sense unprecedented physical and biological phenomena, such as the mass of a single molecule, the force exerted by living cells or certain biochemical reactions. In the next five to ten years, NEMS should offer a real breakthrough for mass spectrometry or gas analysis applications because they can achieve similar resolution to conventional lab equipment but at a lower cost due to their compatibly with VLSI processes. © 2012 IEEE.

Synthesis of Polycarbazole (PCz) is reported using anhydrous ferric chloride as an oxidizing agents. A comparative study of chemically synthesized PCz with electrochemically synthesized is also made. A composite of PCz and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) containing 20% PVC by weight is synthesized and used for the development of solid state pH electrode. The composite was synthesized to improve mechanical strength, stability, and restrict solubility. The pH sensor response is found to be reversible and linear in the pH range 5-10 with sensitivity 35 +/- 2mV/pH. PCz and PVC (20 wt%) based pH sensors show potential applications in development of pH transducers based sensors/biosensors.

It is a task to estimate the surface roughness and slippage as a robotic finger slides through an object, but this is an essential perception of a human hand as a finger moves across a wide variety of surfaces or the hand grasps objects. In the present study, a novel flexible tactile sensor was developed for detecting the coefficient of friction and slippage. We introduced an innovative concept of structural electrodes consisting of a microstructure and distributed microelectrodes on a piezoelectric film to detect the lateral force that acts on a tactile sensor. As experimental results show, the output signals of two distributed microelectrodes can reveal the opposite voltage peaks corresponding to the compressive and tensile stress state underneath the microstructure as the held object begins to slip. Clear-cut signals effectively improve the definition of slippage occurrence compared with other slippage sensors. Furthermore, the coefficients of static friction for objects made of different materials were also evaluated based on slippage detection in a drop test. In order to facilitate the applications in a robot, a compact readout module integrated with a tactile sensor was also developed and demonstrated based on a PC-based program. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. High Power Laser Diodes (HPLD) are increasingly used in different fields of applications such as Industry, Medicine and Defense. Our significant improvements of performances (especially in power and efficiency) and a reproducible manufacturing process have led to reliable, highly robust components. For defense and security applications these devices are used predominantly for pumping of solid state lasers (ranging, designation, countermeasures, and sensors). Due to the drastically falling price per watt they are more and more replacing flash lamps as pump sources. By collimating the laser beam even with a bar to bar pitch of only 400 mu m. cutting edge brightness of our *** achieved Due the extremely high brightness and high power density these stacks are an enabling technology for the development of compact highly efficient portable solid state lasers for applications as telemeters and designators on small platforms such as small UAVs and handheld devices. In combination with beam homogenizing optics their compact size and high efficiency makes these devices perfectly suited as illuminators for portable active imaging systems. For gated active imaging systems a very short pulse at high PRF operation is required. For this application we have developed a diode driver board with an efficiency several times higher than that of a standard driver. As a consequence this laser source has very low power consumption and low waste heat dissipation. In combination with its compact size and the integrated beam homogenizing optics it is therefore ideally suited for use in portable gated active imaging systems. The kWatt peak power enables a range of several hundred meters. The devices described in this paper mostly operate at wavelength between 800 nm and 980nm. Results from diodes operating between 1300 nm and 1550 nm are presented as well.

This article reports the development of ZnO coated one port Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) resonators for the detection of DMMP (dimethyl methyl phosphonate), a simulant of chemical warfare agent Sarin at room temperature. For enhanced sensitivity high frequency SAW devices (433Mhz) were used. Frequency shift with DMMP exposure was found to increase with increase in thickness of ZnO film from 20 to 80 nm with maximum shift of 52 kHz. The cross sensitivity of the sensor with commonly available volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases and water vapors has been performed and was found that the sensitivity towards other interferants is very less as compared to that of DMMP vapors. The sensing mechanism has been explained in detail. It has been shown that there was no significant change in the resistance of the film with exposure to DMMP vapors and hence the contribution of the acoustoelectric interaction is negligible. Further mass loading was not dominant. The negative differential frequency shifts proved that change in elasticity of the film with exposure to DMMP vapors is the dominant sensing mechanism.

With the development of more powerful lasers for applications, optical limiters and blockers are required for providing human eye and optical sensors protection. In some scenarios, laser radiation may seriously interrupt the signal, from transient saturation and can lead to permanent damage. We present a variety of non-linear, solid-state dynamic filter solutions protecting from dazzling and damage in a passive way. Our filters either limit or block the transmission, only if the power exceeds a certain threshold as opposed to spectral filters that block a certain wavelength permanently. We propose a dynamic protection for cameras, sensors and the human eye from laser threats.

There has been increasing demand for high-reality video systems. Thus, there has been research and development into ultra-high-definition television (UDTV) schemes for the next-generation television broadcasting system called "Super Hi-Vision" (SHV). This system aims to improve viewing experience using higher-resolution pictures. A pixel count of 7680x4320 and frame rate of 120fps are defined as full-spec parameter values for the SHV video signal. The total pixel data output rate of full-spec SHV image sensors will be 48Gb/s or greater. Several image sensors have been developed for UDTV or digital cinema applications [1-4], but they still do not fulfill SHV specifications. © 2012 IEEE.

Nanocarbon materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, can potentially overcome the short comes in traditional infrared detector materials because of their excellent electrical and optical properties such as adjustable electrical band gap, low dark current, fast optical response time etc. This paper will present the development of an infrared imaging system that is capable of infrared imaging without cooling. The sensing elements of the system are carbon nanotubes and graphene. When they are illumined by an infrared light, the nano devices generate photocurrents, respectively. As a result, infrared images can be presented based on using compressive sensing after the collection of photocurrent from the nano devices. The development of this imaging system overcomes two major difficulties. First, the system uses single-pixel nano photodetector, so the pixel crosstalk phenomena of conventional sensor arrays can be eliminated. Second, the requirement of single-pixel unit reduces the manufacturing difficulties and costs. Under this compressive sensing camera configuration, 50 x 50 pixel infrared images can be reconstructed efficiently. The results demonstrated a possible solution to overcome the limitation of current infrared imaging.
