We present an 8-fold biosensor system based on surface acoustic waves (SAW). The single biosensors are individually embedded in polymer housings and combined into a sensor array via a passive microfluidic polymer chip. The latter is set up as the main part of an indirect microfluidic flow injection analysis system which is able to strictly separate the system into reusable and disposable components. Only the disposable system part comes in contact with the analyte during the measurement process yielding a system suitable for single use applications as required for, e. g., biomedical research.

Reconfigurable computing is one of the paths to explore towards low-power supercomputing. However, programming these reconfigurable devices is not an easy task and still requires significant research and development efforts to make it really productive. In addition, the use of these devices as accelerators in multicore, SMPs and ccNUMA architectures adds an additional level of programming complexity in order to specify the offloading of tasks to reconfigurable devices and the interoperability with current shared-memory programming paradigms such as OpenMP. This paper presents extensions to OpenMP 3.0 that try to address this second challenge and an implementation in a prototype runtime system. With these extensions the programmer can easily express the offloading of an already existing reconfigurable binary code (bitstream) hiding all the complexities related with device configuration, bitstream loading, data arrangement and movement to the device memory. Our current prototype implementation targets the SGI Altix systems with RASC blades (based on the Virtex 4 FPGA). We analyze the overheads introduced in this implementation and propose a hybrid host/device operational mode to hide some of these overheads, significantly improving the performance of the applications. A complete evaluation of the system is done with a matrix multiplication kernel, including an estimation considering different FPGA frequencies.

A nitric oxide (NO) electrochemical sensor for hypoxic, tumor cell culture applications is developed. Qualitative analysis of the electrode has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. NO amperometric measurement methods have been extensively analyzed. Square wave voltammetry method is found to be one of the optimal methods for the measurement of NO in cell cultures. A hypoxic tumor cell culture measurement (MCF-7 cell type) has also been conducted to observe the NO response to hypoxia.

A single-walled carbon-nanotube-array-based (SWCNT) strain sensor was proposed and its fabrication technique was presented, which afforded more simple process than individual SWCNT-based sensor. A novel selective treatment of strain-based electrical breakdown was utilized to leave the SGS-SWCNTs with high gauge factor in the array. The SWCNT-array strain sensor were used for weighing experiment and the results showed that the sensor's output was basically linear. It also showed that the sensor had relatively higher sensitivity (GF ap 20) and lower power consumption (tens of nanoWatts) than metal strain-gauge, which had potential applications in high sensitivity strain, weighing or pressure sensors.

The integration of PET and MR imaging requires a novel type of highly integrated PET detector. To cope with geometric constraints and MR compliance a very compact detector stack was built within the HYPERImage consortium. This allows a four side buttable detector module design with a low dead space in between. The scintillation light coming from a LYSO array is converted in a SiPM sensor tile with a high packing fraction and a high photo detection efficiency to provide sub-ns time-of-flight timing resolution. The analog signals coming from the SiPM elements are digitized close to the sensor to minimize potential crosstalk. A custom mixed-signal ASIC was integrated on a 64 channel sensor stack which is powered and controlled by an FPGA interface board. The complete sensor stack is assembled and characterized to extract the PET relevant parameters, in particular energy, timing and spatial resolution for clinical and pre-clinical PET/MR applications.

Advanced insulation materials are needed to support future electrodynamic tether missions as well as for other high voltage applications requiring direct exposure to vacuum/space plasma conditions, such as cabling to solar arrays. Some of the desired characteristics of these materials include the ability to resist damage from low-Earth-orbit environments (including atomic oxygen and micrometeoroids);insulating materials with high dielectric strengths and flexible enough to prevent damage;and conductors and coatings that have low electrical resistance. A particularly important concern is the need for electrical discharge/arc prevention and suppression if the electrical insulation is breached. In the case of discharges in a vacuum, the insulation material often becomes the gas source to feed the discharge. We have performed some preliminary work to identify, develop, and test these advanced coatings. The approach we are proposing for suppressing the discharge is including in the coating an encapsulated or entrapped electronegative gas, liquid, or solid that are released upon impact or at the onset of a discharge suppressing the growth and continuation of the discharge. This paper discusses the mechanisms for arc creation, preliminary tests we have preformed to suppress arc creation, and a path forward for development of such coatings. Geiger-mode multi-pixel APD is recognized as the best alternative solid-state photo-sensor for vacuum PMTs in various applications. Its magnetic field immunity and high gain have made it popular in MR/PET and high-energy physics detector research. In this paper, we utilized its compactness and high gain in the design of a TOF PET detector. In typical block detectors based on PMT, the full timing capability of both the PMT and scintillator could not be achieved due to the light sharing used in the Anger logic scheme. Since the Geiger-mode APD is a solid-state based technology, we can utilize one-to-one coupling between a scintillator and the photo-sensor to utilize the best timing capability of both. Also, the high photon detection efficiency of MPPC, Geiger mode APD from Hamamatsu, would help improve timing resolution. We made a block detector based on a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 mm 2 MPPC coupled to a 4 × 4 array of 3 × 3 × 25 mm 3 LYSO crystals to evaluate its performance. We have achieved an average energy resolution of 9% and 314ps coincidence timing resolution with very good uniformity. This shows that the solid-state based photo-sensor can be used for TOF PET detector. During the development of the detector, we recognized that a compact and low power electronic readout scheme is one of the biggest challenges, including its cost, for MPPC or other Geiger-mode APDs to be realized as products.

This study proposes a novel method to measure the distribution of occlusive force on the crown using a flexible force sensor array. The basic principle of the developed flexible force sensor array was based on the strong piezoelectrical property of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) in the sensor. The high mechanical strength and low-cost MLCCs make it ideal for large forces measuring applications. Measured results indicate that single MLCC force sensor can afford a large force loading of up to 1.1 GPa for a sensor with the cross section area of 0.64 mm 2 . Experimental results also indicate that the uses of MLCCs as the force sensors have several advantages including high force sensitivity, nice repeatability, high strength, big measuring range and small hysteresis behavior. A 3 times 3 MLCC force sensor array fabricated in a polyimide-based flexible circuit film (FCCL) is used to measure the corresponding force distribution in a simulated horse teeth mold fabricated with a rapid-prototyping process. The measured results indicate the MLCC force sensor array has a potential to be an ideal component for bite force measurement.

We show several applications for a unique method for creating user-friendly, micropatterned substrates for neuron and cell culture. With neurons, we demonstrated that our micropatterns can separate cell bodies and axons while organizing them in orderly arrays for easy experimentation. These micropatterned neuron cultures also persisted for weeks, enabling maturation and development of presynaptic structures and potentially allowing the explicit design of neuronal circuits. Beyond neurons, we also demonstrated the culture of fibroblasts on the patterned substrates and showed that these cell types likewise remained viable and highly compliant to a variety micropatterns.

Radar-based advanced safety systems are crucial to reduce road accidents caused by driver inattention. An actual and pervasive adoption of radar technology requires the development of low-cost Silicon-integrated sensors, including microwave, analog, and digital blocks on a single chip, able to replace existing discrete electronics based on compound semiconductors. Indeed, the considerable advantage of silicon lies in its natural capability for integration that will enable a higher level of complexity in such sensors. This paper presents a fully integrated 24GHz UWD radar sensor implemented in a 0.13mum SiGe BiCMOS process. The UWB signal generation takes advantage of a PLL. The produced 24.125GHz carrier is properly BPSK modulated to increase sensor robustness within the entire SRR sensor network.
