The development of a wireless sensor microsystems containing all the components of data acquisition system, such as sensors, signal-conditioning circuits, analog-digital converter. embedded microcontroller (MCU), and RF communication modules has become now the focus of attention in many biomedical applications. This paper discusses innovation circuits and system techniques for building advanced smart medical devices (SMD). Low power consumption and high reliability are among the main criteria that must be given priority when designing such wirelessly powered Microsystems. Different capacitive readout circuits used for pressure sensing will be described. An example for a low power wireless system developed for multi-sensors monitoring will be presented.

An experimental study about fluorophores, which have never been used before in thermometric applications has been carried out for the development of fluorescence based temperature sensors. Fluorescent dyes like: 10-(3-sulfopropyl) acridinium betaine, quinacrine dihydrochloride, naphthofluorescein, fluorescein and 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt have been immobilized on sol-gel derived coatings deposited on optical fibers by dip coating. Comparison between the characteristics of the different sensors revealed that the fluorescent dye 10(3-sulfopropyl) acridinium betaine showed the best performances: a sensitivity around 1 degrees C, response time lower than 8 s in thermal transitions between 30 and 250 degrees C and negligible hysteresis along the dynamic range: 30-250 degrees C (220 degrees C). Extended study of cross-sensitivity and fluorescence degradation when sensors are exposed to volatile organic compounds or humidity variations has been performed with 10-(3-sulfopropyl) acridinium betaine. Consequently, methods for isolating the sensors to the effect of harmful atmospheres have also been developed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The investigations on artificial olfactory systems in the last 20 years were basically concerned with the development of chemical sensors with selectivity properties similar to that of natural receptor. As a consequence, among the various features of olfaction emerged in the last two decades only the presumed non-selectivity of receptors is currently considered. Therefore, as physiology progresses enlighted the mechanisms of elaboration of signals in the olfactory pathways, artificial nose concept did not evolve much since its first conjecture. In this paper, an attempt to introduce artificial noses more adherent to recent views on olfaction is presented. The typical methodology of translation of conventional analog sensor signals into biologically similar spikes is applied to chemical sensors and a demonstration of the preservation of information sufficient for odour classification is given through a practical example. This paper presents Wireless Intelligent sensor and Actuator Network (WISAN) as a scalable wireless platform for structural health monitoring. Design of WISAN targeted key issues arising in applications of structural health monitoring. First, scalability of system from a few sensors to hundreds of sensors is provided through hierarchical cluster-tree network architecture. Special consideration is given to reliable delivery of wireless data in real-world conditions. Second, a possibility of autonomous operation of sensor nodes from energy harvesters is ensured through extremely low power consumption in operational and standby modes of operation. Third, all the sensors and actuators operate in globally synchronized time on the order of a few microseconds through utilization of the beaconing mechanism of IEEE802.15.4 standard. Fourth, depending on application requirements, the system is capable of delivering real-time streams of sensor data or performing on-sensor storage and/or processing with result transmission. Finally, a capability to work with heterogeneous arrays of sensors and actuators is ensured by a variety of analog and digital interfaces. Results of experimental tests validate the performance of the WISAN.

The rapid pace of development in the field of long-range imaging is illustrated by two new detector technologies for passive and active imaging. Active systems, using a near-infrared pulse laser and a fast, gated detector, are now adopted for most long range imaging applications. This concept is often called burst-illumination LIDAR or BIL. The SELEX solid state detector is based on two major components: an array of HgCdTe avalanche photodiodes, and a custom-designed CMOS multiplexer to perform the fast gating and photon signal capture. These hybrid arrays produce sensitivities as low as 10 photons rms, due largely to very high, almost noise-free avalanche gain in the HgCdTe diodes. The sensitivity, dynamic range and image quality is now such that the camera performance is usually limited by coherence and scintillation effects in the scene. With this strong sensor capability, it has been possible to launch the next generation of multiplexers to satisfy systems of the future. For instance, most laser-gated imaging systems use a suite of passive infrared and visible cameras to complement the BIL channel. It is highly advantageous to combine these functions into one electro-optic system, leading to a simpler, smaller, lower power and lower cost system. The key technical steps are to find solutions for the difficult multifunctional detector and the dual-wavelength optic. A detector has been developed to image passively in the medium and short wavebands, and actively in BIL mode. The performance of the detector and optic is described. Another major systems enhancement is to be able to generate 3D images, particularly in complex scenes, to further improve background clutter rejection and provide agile, feedback control of the range gating in a dynamic environment. Here the detector senses the range, as well as the laser pulse intensity, on a pixel-by-pixel basis, providing depth context for each laser pulse. In the last couple of years, a range of ESA sponsored studies and market assessments were performed to determine the viability and need of a Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based space rate sensor. The objective such a sensor would be to offer a suitable level of performance, with a considerably lower cost than any other competing sensor technology. Additional advantages of a solid-state technology in terms of mechanical robustness, together with low power, mass and size, offered significant advantages to spacecraft system design and accommodation. The successful outcome of these activities resulted in a MEMS rate sensor development programme. This development is based on the established BAE SYSTEMS automotive MEMS detector, however significant developments were required to meet the performance requirements while achieving compatibility of the electronics to the space environment and ensuring low recurring price. This paper presents the status of the European MEMS Rate sensor development, in particular the detailed design trade-offs and analyses activities performed in the derivation of a prototype detector with associated robust electronics. These designs have been manufactured and are being tested with flight design electronics. The results of early testing, and the critical assessment of the results against the target applications are presented. development of a laser transmitter for space applications is a highly challenging task. The laser must be rugged, reliable, lightweight, compact and energy efficient. Most of these features are inherently achieved by diode pumping of solid state lasers. Overall system reliability can further be improved by appropriate optical design of the laser resonator besides selection of suitable electro-optical and opto-mechanical components. This paper presents the design details and the theoretically estimated performance of a crossed-porro prism based, folded Z-shaped laser resonator. A symmetrically pumped Nd: YAG laser rod of 3 mm diameter and 60 mm length is placed in the gain arm with total input peak power of 1800 W from laser diode arrays. Electro-optical Q-switching is achieved through a combination of a polarizer, a fractional waveplate and LiNbO3 Q-switch crystal (9 x 9 x 25 mm) placed in the feedback arm. Polarization coupled output is obtained by optimizing azimuth angle of quarter wave plate placed in the gain arm. Theoretical estimation of laser output energy and pulse width has been carried out by varying input power levels and resonator length to analyse the performance tolerances. The designed system is capable of meeting the objective of generating laser pulses of 10 ns duration and 30 mJ energy @ 10 Hz.

We report on the development of InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice focal plane arrays (FPAs) for missile warning systems in airborne platforms. The FPA fabrication technology was developed on the basis of monospectral superlattices for the MWIR (3-5 mu m) spectral range. A monospectral. 288x384 MWIR camera with 24 mu m pixel pitch, a noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD) better than 14 mK and a background-limited performance (BLIP) up to 92 K is demonstrated. Based on the monospectral technology, the first bispectral superlattice camera was realized. The dual color 288x384 superlattice camera features simultaneous, pixel-registered detection of both spectral channels between 3-4 mu m and 4-5 mu m with a NETD better than 30 mK and 17 m-K, respectively. Hence, spatial or temporal registration problems, which are common to most dual color and dual band infrared imagers are solved with the new bispectral MWIR missile alerting sensor.
