We developed combinatorial screening techniques for the efficient design and optimization of sensor materials formulations for gas and liquid optical sensors. Our approach is based on the fabrication and performance screening of discrete and gradient sensor materials arrays. Simultaneous formation of multiple sensor coatings into discrete arrays and their screening provides not only a well-recognized acceleration in the screening rate, but also considerably reduces or even eliminates sources of variability, which are randomly affecting sensors response during a conventional one-at-a-time sensor coating evaluation. The application of gradient sensor arrays provides additional capabilities for rapid finding of the optimal formulation parameters. © 2005 IEEE.

development of a miniaturized oxygen sensor with a solid-state ceria-titania reference for automotive applications is reported. The solid reference eliminates the need for an air reference, hence enabling the device to he totally exposed to the exhaust gas. The sensor consists of YSZ electrolyte, platinum electrodes, and ceria-titania reference layers. Response of the sensor was investigated in a gas mixture consisting of 94% He, 6% CO and also air at 400, 500 and 600 degrees C. This new sensor generates a pseudo-linear ivy lean-to-rich transition response at 400 degrees C in the lean region, while at higher temperatures a sharp transition occurs at the stoichiometric value. Oxygen depiction and oxygen charging time of the solid reference, which has a crucial effect on sensor's performance, were measured at several temperatures by replacing the atmosphere from a gas mixture consisting of 93.8% He, 6% CO, and C(2)H(6) 0.2% to air. The time response of the sensor exhibited promising results for automobile applications. The new sensor exhibits variations in the voltage, from about +500 mV in a rich region to about -500 mV in a lean region, an interesting behavior not observed previously in air-referenced structures.

As part of the Advanced Targeting FLIR (ATFLIR) program for the United states Navy, Raytheon has designed and developed a compact and rugged diode-pumped solid-state laser for high-altitude airborne targeting systems. This laser is based on the relatively mature Nd:YAG technology. In the laser pump head, 168 diode bars are stacked into 24 arrays, which, in turn, are packed around the laser rod to provide 4-sided optical pumping. These standard 20 degrees C operating temperature diode bars and the laser rod are conductively cooled to fins located in the air flow circulating in the pod housing. The laser operates with very low variation in output energy or beam divergence at laser pulse rates from 8 to 20 Hertz and ambient temperatures from -54 to +71 degrees C. The optical to optical efficiency of the pump head is better than 25%. Eye safe laser wavelengths are achieved thorough the use of an Optical Parametric Oscillator. This compact and rugged diode-pumped solid-state laser with proven performance and reliability on high altitude aircrafts can also be modified to serve as transmitters for a variety of airborne laser remote sensing applications. It also has the potential to serve as laser transmitters for spaceborne applications with some design changes and space qualifications.

InfraredVision Technology Corporation ("ITC") has improved the performance of the 320x240 microbolometer Uncooled Focal Plane Array ("UFPA") by increasing the pixel fill-factor. This allows state-of-the-art performance for applications requiring high sensitivity. Measurements taken on microbolometer test structures and detector arrays show a factor of two improvements in the responsivity over that previously reported for our standard 37.5-mu m pixel UFPA. Performance results for microbolometer pixels ranging in size from 50 mu m down to 15 mu m are presented. Our ITC-1000 series detector product addresses both imaging and radiometric commercial-camera applications. With the development of a high fill-factor pixel design, ITC will soon provide a high-performance VOx microbolometer-based sensor to camera manufacturers requiring state-of-the-art detector performance. FPA performance is presented to demonstrate the sensor improvements accomplished. The use of our on-chip NonUniformity Correction (NUC) feature, available on the ITC-1000 detector, is characterized to demonstrate the performance limitations.

This contribution presents the development of a miniaturized sun sensor for sun angle detection in space applications. The sun sensor has a field of view (FoV) of greater than 2 pi sr and a resolution of approximately 1 degree in elevation and azimuth angle;thus, it is a coarse sun sensor with the advantage of having a large field of view. Key elements of this sun sensor are its curved shape, the photosensitive layer consisting of copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), the transparent conductive layer consisting of thin molybdenum or aluminum doped zinc oxide, and its integrated design. The sun sensor will be one of the sensors in the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) of a nano-satellite.

This paper reports a miniaturized environmental sensor system integrated with RF communication module. This system has been developed for on-site monitoring of water pollution by heavy metal ions. The system is composed of an electrochemical sensor, a custom potentiostat module, and an RF module for wireless communication. Also, we present monolithic MEMS VCOs integrated with high-Q MEMS inductors and MEMS transmission lines for low-power wireless transceiver applications. Phase noise of the proposed MEMS VCOs has been improved by more than 7 dBc/Hz compared with their CMOS counterparts at 1MHz offset from center frequencies of 5GHz and 13 GHz, respectively. © 2005 IEEE.

Situation awareness and accurate Target Identification (TID) are critical requirements for successful battle management. Ground vehicles can be detected, tracked, and in some cases imaged using airborne or space-borne microwave radar. Obscurants such as camouflage net and/or tree canopy foliage can degrade the performance of such radars. Foliage can be penetrated with long wavelength microwave radar, but generally at the expense of imaging resolution. The goals of the DARPA Jigsaw program include the development and demonstration of high-resolution 3-D imaging laser radar (ladar) sensor technology and systems that can be used from airborne platforms to image and identify military ground vehicles that may be hiding under camouflage or foliage such as tree canopy. With DARPA support, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has developed a rugged and compact 3-D imaging ladar system that has successfully demonstrated the feasibility and utility of this application. The sensor system has been integrated into a UH-1 helicopter for winter and summer flight campaigns. The sensor operates day or night and produces high-resolution 3-D spatial images using short laser pulses and a focal plane array of Geiger-mode avalanche photo-diode (APD) detectors with independent digital time-of-flight counting circuits at each pixel. The sensor technology includes Lincoln Laboratory developments of the microchip laser and novel focal plane arrays. The microchip laser is a passively Q-switched solid-state frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser transmitting short laser pulses (300 ps FWHM) at 16 kilohertz pulse rate and at 532 nm wavelength. The single photon detection efficiency has been measured to be > 20% using these 3202 Silicon Geiger-mode APDs at room temperature. The APD saturates while providing a gain of typically > 106. The growing new field of cell microarrays enables new biomedical assays. We present a unique parallel cell printing technique, which allows the fast production of living cell microarrays. A 24 nozzle printhead was used to spot vital cells in a non-contact manner. We used a cell suspension with 8×107 cells/ml to generate 100 microarrays containing 24 cell-spots each. Every spot contains between 80 and 100 living cells with extraordinary high survival rates of more than 90 % after printing. Compared to other cell printing techniques [1, 2] we achieved a four times higher cell number per spot and very evenly distributed cells within the spot. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper we report the development of n-type and p-type Si-microprobe arrays fabricated by using in situ doping in vapor-liquid-solid, (VLS) growth employing a gas-source molecular beam epitaxy (GS-MBE) system as the growth environment. VLS growth using Si2H6 only gives intrinsic Si microprobes with the resistivity of similar to 10(4) Omega-cm, which decreases to similar to 10-(2) Omega-cm after phosphorous diffusion at 1100 degrees C. However, by incorporating in situ doping into the VLS growth method, more conductive probes (resistivity similar to 10(-3) Omega-cm) can be realized at a temperature less than 700 degrees C. The site and diameter of the VLS-grown probe can be controlled and the growth rate is higher than that of a poly-Si or epitaxial Si crystal grown by the vapor-solid (VS) method. Due to the low processing temperature, in situ doping is effective for realizing highly conductive probe arrays with smart sensor devices by a standard IC process followed by VLS growth. The wide range of doping leads to the possibility of using these probes for the fabrication of vertical active devices such as diodes and transistors.

There is an urgent need for new chemical sensors for defense and security applications. In particular, sensors are required that can provide higher sensitivity and faster response in the - field than existing baseline technologies. We have been developing a new solid-state chemical sensor technology based on microscale polymer composite fiber arrays. The fibers consist of an insulating polymer doped with conducting particles and are electrospun directly onto the surface of an interdigitated microelectrode. The concentration of the conducting particles within the fiber is controlled and is near the percolation threshold. Thus, the electrical resistance of the polymer fiber composite is very sensitive to volumetric changes produced in the polymer by vapor absorption. Preliminary results are presented on the fabrication and testing of the new microsensor. The objective is to take advantage of the very high surface to volume ratio, low thermal mass and linear geometry of the composite fibers to produce sensors exhibiting an extremely high vapor sensitivity and rapid response. The simplicity and low cost of a resistance-based chemical microsensor makes this sensing approach an attractive alternative to devices requiring RF electronics or time-of-flight analysis. Potential applications of this technology include battlespace awareness, homeland security, environmental surveillance, medical diagnostics and food process monitoring.
