Pressure sensors with a metallic diaphragm and bonded strain gauge are by far the most widely used sensors in pressure measurement. In this work, we describe a method to fabricate a low power, light weight and low cost pressure sensor using Aluminum diaphragm. The diaphragm is hard anodized to get insulating base over which Pt-W (Pt: 92%, W: 8%) thin film strain sensors are sputter deposited for sensing the pressure. Hence, this technique eliminates the application of adhesive to bond the strain gauges to the metallic diaphragm. The required level of insulation resistance(in the range of giga-ohms) between the metal diaphragm and the sputtered stain gauge is provided by the hard anodic film. The hard anodic coating is obtained by the wet electrochemical method with pulsed power supply arrangement. The details of diaphragm fabrication, hard anodization of Aluminum, testing, calibration of sensor and its applications are discussed and compared with sensors fabricated from different Aluminum alloys (AA2024, AA6061 and AA7075). © 2005 IEEE.

The development of miniature and inexpensive solid-state inertial instruments for different applications implicates an urgent and complex group of problems. Besides the level of initial investment, many factors have to be analyzed for various devices in their operating principles. They include requirements on primary cost and expected scale of production, and an effective categorization of instruments with different performance specifications. For application to highly maneuverable objects of a mid-scale production, it has drawn a definite interest to use microelectromechanical gyroscopic sensors (MEMS) utilizing the surface and bulk acoustic waves (SAW and BAW) in piezoelectric crystals. The fundamental inertial effects of rotation on the phase velocity and polarization parameters of elastic waves in solids have been considered earlier [1]. Under the restriction of modern planar technology, the core elements of structures and signal processing for design of solid-state gyroscopes using these effects are described in the present report. To validate correctness of the theory developed in this paper, the experimental and numerical results are given on a new rate sensor fabricated with a thermostable cut of single-crystalline quartz, using technique of interdigital transducers (IDT's). A set of different resonator schemes by Kurosawa, Varadan, et al, who claimed the inertial grade of several deg/h, has been analyzed also. An original joint STM-KIST's variant of an advanced SAW-sensor has been proposed.

Optical interconnects will have an important role for internal communication within future spacecrafts as well as intra-communication between satellite constellations. Optical sources with novel functionality, such as solid state beam steering, would have many advantages. A novel approach for creating 2-dimensional arrays of coherently coupled vertically emitting laser cavities has been demonstrated and is discussed herein. Coherent optical coupling is achieved by creating a 2 x 2 array of defect cavities within the top distributed Bragg reflector of a photonic crystal vertical cavity surface emitting laser. By modifying the index within the coupling regions, accomplished by varying the hole parameters in those regions, coherent coupling has been observed in the far field. Utilization of this approach may lead to extended area coherent sources with high spectral purity. Moreover, tuning the phase shift between lasers in the array would enable angular steering the far field emission pattern. Such a coherent array of lasers would allow the development of optical communication laser sources with electronic beam steering capability(12).

This paper presents the development and characterization of a microfabricated membraneless biofuel cell on a polymer microfluidic chip. The developed microscale biofuel cell utilizes glucose as fuel to generate bioelectric power and produces water as by-product. The developed biofuel cell exhibits a power output (power density up to 4.66 μW/cm2) which can be modulated by the electrode separation. The absence of a proton exchange membrane separating the anode and cathode chambers imparts high design flexibility to the developed biofuel cell. The biofuel cell has been tested for operation in physiological levels of pH and temperature, with both flowing and static fuel conditions. Due to its relatively wide range of operational temperature and stability in flowing fuel conditions, coupled with its harmless by-products and absence of any toxic reagents, renders it highly appropriate for applications in microfluidic, implantable, and portable systems. © 2005 IEEE.

We developed combinatorial screening techniques for the efficient design and optimization of sensor materials formulations for gas and liquid optical sensors. Our approach is based on the fabrication and performance screening of discrete and gradient sensor materials arrays. Simultaneous formation of multiple sensor coatings into discrete arrays and their screening provides not only a well-recognized acceleration in the screening rate, but also considerably reduces or even eliminates sources of variability, which are randomly affecting sensors response during a conventional one-at-a-time sensor coating evaluation. The application of gradient sensor arrays provides additional capabilities for rapid finding of the optimal formulation parameters.

The first electronic nose using Ultrafast SAW/GC technology has been designed for security applications. Based upon ultra-high speed gas chromatography, it is a powerful new tool for detection of odors and chemical vapors produced by explosives, chemical and biological weapons, contraband of all kinds, hazardous industrial materials, improvised explosives, and even flammables. It is a true electronic nose, incorporating a new type of solid-state chemical sensor with part-per-trillion sensitivity and universal selectivity. In essence it misses nothing and can be trained to recognize and alert to any target odor signature. Unlike trace detectors, electronic noses recognize odors and fragrances based upon their full chemical signature. An electronic nose is able to detect all compounds within an odor and provide a complete chemical profile. An expandable library of over 700 chemicals and odor signatures allows it to recognize virtually any target odor. Using ultra-high speed chromatography to separate chemicals within an odor in near real time, pattern recognition and trace detection using virtual chemical sensors can be performed at the same time. Trace detection combined with odor profiling can be an effective method for recognizing the presence of contraband material of all kinds. Electronic odor profiles are instrument independent allowing security users to distribute and share odor signatures. Chemical sensor arrays have interested developers of security screening systems for some time, yet physical sensors have limited performance because of overlapping responses, physical instability, and low sensitivity. Using ultra-high speed gas chromatography, arrays of virtual chemical sensors with non-overlapping response are now possible. Long term stability coupled with picogram sensitivity allows the use of artificial intelligence, neural networks, and pattern recognition algorithms to detect and recognize an unlimited number of threat vapors.

The MDA/AS is developing advanced capabilities in the IR sensor area for ballistic missile defense. Infrared sensors play an important role to every layer of ballistic missile defense systems. Current missile defense systems use infrared sensors with material systems such as InSb and HgCdTe. They are sufficient to counter current threat level. However, with the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) new capability based acquisition, the Advanced Systems (AS) of MDA is pushing the state-of-the-art of infrared technology to a higher level. The new infrared sensors will have the capability to cover a broad range of spectrum, have higher sensitivity, uniformity and operabilities, large format, multicolor, with a much better manufacturability and affordability. Examples are strained layer type-II superlattices, quantum well infrared photodetectors, HgCdTe on Si, PbSnTe, and other novel concepts. This presentation will discuss what IR sensors are used in current missile defense systems, what is new in technology development, and it's system applications.

Compact robust hydraulic actuators are very important for space related applications because of their capability of producing much larger forces per unite volume/mass than existing technologies. The major components of these actuators are PZT stacks (pusher) and microvalves. The PZT pusher works at high frequencies to produce large flow rates (proportional to displacement traveled) and high pressures. As a component of the hydraulic actuator, the microvalves are challenged in matching the requirements of the PZT in terms of high operational frequencies, large flow rates and high-pressure support capabilities. In order to fulfill these requirements, the authors have developed robust self-assembled solid nickel micro valve arrays consisting of 80 single micro check valves, to achieve the required flow rate (> 10 cc/second). A single micro check valve consists of an inlet channel (200 mu m in diameter), a specially designed valve flap held by four identical micro beams, and outlet channels. All these structures are made from electroformed nickel and are self-assembled during a novel in situ UV-LIGA fabrication process. Finite element simulation results show that the micro check valve has a 1(st) resonant frequency of 16 kHz and is able to support pressures greater than 10 MPa. Test results show the flow rate is 19 cc/s at a pressure difference of 100 psi, and is roughly proportional to the pressure applied. Based on Poiseuille's law, it is reasonable to predict larger flow rates if higher-pressure differences are applied.
