solid‐state MULTI‐sensor ARRAY SYSTEM FOR REAL TIME IMAGING OF MAGNETIC FIELDS AND FERROUS OBJECTS

In this paper the development of a solid‐state sensors based system for real‐time imaging of magnetic fields and ferrous objects is described. The system comprises 1089 magneto inductive solid state sensors arranged in a 2D array matrix of 33×33 files and columns, equally spaced in order to cover an approximate area of 300 by 300 mm. The sensor array is located within a large current‐carrying coil. Data is sampled from the sensors by several DSP controlling units and finally streamed to a host computer via a USB 2.0 interface and the image generated and displayed at a rate of 20 frames per minute. The development of the instrumentation has been complemented by extensive numerical modeling of field distribution patterns using boundary element methods. The system was originally intended for deployment in the non‐destructive evaluation (NDE) of reinforced concrete. Nevertheless, the system is not only capable of producing real‐time, live video images of the metal target embedded within any opaque medium, it also allows the real‐time visualization and determination of the magnetic field distribution emitted by either permanent magnets or geometries carrying current. Although this system was initially developed for the NDE arena, it could also have many potential applications in many other fields, including medicine, security, manufacturing, quality assurance and design involving magnetic fields.

With the rapid growth of mm-wave wireless technologies, phased arrays are essential to meet the stringent link-budget requirements under path losses. However, antenna array inter-element coupling distorts each antenna load from its nominal 50Ω impedance, commonly known as antenna voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), degrading the array radiation pattern and each transmitter-element performance. Moreover, an antenna VSWR depends on the array-element location and the beamforming coefficients, complicating any correction/compensation schemes [1]. With mismatched antenna loads, the desired actual element gain, radiated power, and radiation pattern often deviate significantly from the target values.

The performance of the Cassegrain Adaptive Optics (AO) system of the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope is reported. The system is based on a curvature wavefront sensor with 36 photon-counting avalanche photodiode modules and a bimorph wavefront correcting deformable mirror with 36 driving electrodes. This AO system has been in service since 2002 April for two open-use instruments, an infrared camera and spectrograph (IRCS) and a coronagraph imager with adaptive optics (CIAO). The Strehl ratio in the K-band is around 0.3 when a bright guide star is available under 0".4 seeing condition. High sensitivity of the wavefront sensor allows significant improvement in the image quality, even for faint guide stars down to R = 18 mag. The design of the new Nasmyth Adaptive Optics system with 188 control elements under construction is described. This new system with fivefold increase in the number of control elements will provide twice higher Strehl ratio of 0.7. To increase the sky coverage for this new system, a power laser system to produce an artificail guide star in the upper atmosphere is also under construction. The AO system with laser guide capability enables the coverage up to 80% of the entire sky and offers diffraction limited observation for almost any target in the sky. An all solid-state 4W laser to generate the sodium D line emission by summing the two YAG laser frequencies is under development. The generated laser beam is tranmitted through a photonic crystal fiber to the laser launching telescope attached at the backside of the secondary mirror. Expected performance of this laser guide Nasmyth AO system is shown.

solid-state lasers operating at high continuous wave output power are attractive sources for various applications in materials processing and nonlinear frequency conversion. Since the development of reliable high power diode arrays, numerous publications have reported on the superiority of these pump sources compared to the conventional excitation with flash lamps [1-5]. While first generations of solid-state lasers were directly pumped with diode lasers, the application of fiber-coupled diodes has been prooven to result in significant improvements of system parameters, such as reliability and stability [2, 5].

CMOS image sensors are generally characterized by their low power consumption, single power supply and capability for on-chip system integration in contrast with CCD image sensors. Even though CMOS image sensors have these advantages, they are not yet widely used in image capture applications because of their insufficient image quality due to the difficulty in FPN cancellation. This FPN-reduction technology and a hole accumulated diode (HAD) for sensing elements is applied to the CMOS image sensor. The CMOS image sensor consists of a 640/spl times/480 pixel array in 1/3 inch image format, a current-to-voltage converter, a correlated double sampling circuit and a timing generator. This image sensor uses a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS logic process with specialized add-on steps for HAD. The power supply is 3.3 V and maximum frame rate is 30 frames/s.

A CMOS solid-state photomultiplier (SSPM) coupled to a scintillation crystal uses an array of CMOS Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GPD) pixels to collect light and produce a signal proportional to the energy of the radiation. Each pixel acts as a binary photon detector, but the summed output is an analog representation of the total photon intensity. We have successfully fabricated arrays of GPD pixels in a CMOS environment, which makes possible the production of miniaturized arrays integrated with the detector electronics in a small silicon chip. In this work, we compare designs for the SSPM detector and present preliminary results in constructing a position-sensitive solid-state photomultiplier (PS-SSPM) using a commercially available CMOS process. The prototype arrays utilize a resistor network to provide a position-sensitive readout of the array. One pixel design achieves maximum detection efficiency for 632-nm photons approaching 20% with a room temperature dark count rate of less then 1 kHz for a 30-mum-diameter pixel. Pair-wise cross talk was measured to be less than 2% for 150 mum pixel spacing

McDonnell Douglas has delivered diode-pumped lasers for space and military applications, and started in 1991 to develop lasers for the commercial marketplace. This paper describes the development at McDonnell Douglas of their commercial laser products of high power direct diode laser systems and diode pumped solid state lasers. Through a combination of diode lasers and micro-optics, McDonnell Douglas developed high power fully collimated point source arrays and quasi-collimated arrays.< >

This paper describes a high performance Bi-CMOS technology, Hi-BiCMOS, and its applications to VLSIs. By combining bipolar and CMOS devices in unit circuits of VLSIs, Hi-BiCMOS provides both speed performance competitive with bipolar LSIs and integration density close to that of CMOS LSIs. Hi-BiCMOS technology has been successfully used for static RAMs and gate arrays. Effectiveness of its applications to some types of processors has also been examined by evaluating test chips.

Investigation of individual biological cell interactions on a large scale creates applications in drug screening, cell separation and cell analysis. The IC is designed to detect and manipulate more than 10k cells in parallel and includes a 320 /spl times/ 320 sensing and actuation array. The chip is implemented in 0.35/spl mu/m 2P 3M CMOS.
