This top level paper describes the development approach, the system design and the proof-of-concept engineering model that has resulted from over five years of research and development efforts. The system concept meets the USAF's prioritized needs of low lifecycle cost, better autonomous guidance accuracy than currently available and significant operational flexibility. Assisted by the utilization of solid-state sensors, the design eliminates wear-out mechanisms and has a projected system mean time between failures of over twenty years of continuous operation while meeting stringent accuracy requirements. An all attitude sensor sphere with a wireless power feed and wireless data communications provides a protective environment for Honeywell high-precision, radiation-hard Strategic Resonating Beam Accelerometers and Strategic Fiber-Optic Gyroscopes, both of which are currently under sponsored development. The implementation of a strapped down guidance algorithm applied to a continuously self-calibrating system alo contributes to a novel system approach that uses the synergy between all of these elements to achieve the desired low acquisition and operational cost while achieving high accuracy, autonomous guidance capability over a variety of current and future missions. © 2008 by Honeywell International Inc.

The number of defect pixels in solid state image sensor grows as the digital imagers continue increasing in image size and pixel density. However, limited number of defect pixels is usually allowed after detection and correction techniques are applied. The defect pixel detection and defect pixel correction are operated separately but the former must employ before the latter is in use. Without an excellent detection scheme, the correction algorithm cannot offer impressed result. Therefore, the defect pixel detection becomes very critical to deliver a high quality image. Traditional detection scheme, which finds the defect pixels during manufacturing, is not able to discover the spread defect pixels years late. Consequently, the lifetime and robust defect pixel detection technique, which identifies the fault pixels when camera is in use, is more practical and developed. The paper presents a fast dead pixel detection technique without complicated mathematic computations so that the embedded devices can easily implement it. Twenty-four images with six dead pixel types are tested and the experimental result indicates that it can perform 99.65% of detection.

Resonant sensors based on flexural mode MEMS resonators are promising for mass, strain, acceleration and pressure sensing applications. However, low quality factor and high motional resistance of these resonators in air limit oscillator and hence sensor performance. In this work, we report a piezoelectric membrane resonator array with two-port configuration, leveraging its high power handling capability and low motional resistance. An oscillator was designed based on it and achieved a phase noise of -115 dBc/Hz and -145 dBc/Hz at offset frequencies of 1 kHz and 100 kHz, respectively. The lowest Allan deviation of the oscillator was measured to be 0.21 Hz. The phase noise and Allan deviation are the best among low frequency piezoelectric MEMS oscillators for resonant sensors working in air.

This article investigates the dependency between advances in chip technology, architectures, and security. Two major properties of secure systems are analyzed in this context: data separation of different applications and secure storage of cryptographic keys. We discuss first examples for compromising data separation, e.g. the Rowhammer attack on modern DRAMs, enabled by the sensitivity of shrinked DRAM cells for crosstalk effects, or Meltdown and Spectre attacks using cache side channels. These attacks show the dependency between data separation and advances in technology and architecture. Even more powerful attacks exploiting bus and network-on-chip traffic are possible. Another area where technology meets security is the storage of cryptographic keys. New technologies offer new ways to realize non-volatile memory (NVM) for secret data storage and to implement physical unclonable functions (PUFs), which generate the key during system start and do not store it permanently in NVM. To enable good PUFs, technology and security people should work together as early as possible in the development phase, since PUFs must be characterized carefully. Ideally a PUF module is provided as a characterized and reliable security primitive in the design library. If we manage to take security already into account in early technology development phases and during architecture definition, we will get more secure systems-on-chip in the future.

A new class of microwave power module (MPM) is being developed for phased antenna array applications. The MPM consists of a compact S-band 1 kW traveling-wave tube (TWT), a solid-state pre-amplifier, and a power supply. The proposed S-band MPM provides tenfold peak power increase compared to state-of-the art S-band MPMs. The TWT amplifier is driven by a 6 kV, 0.9 A electron beam. A depressed collector which was designed by using a 3-D conformal finite-difference time-domain particle-in-cell code,VORPAL [1], was employed to maximize the efficiency. The compact and lightweight S-band TWT is short in length (circuit length is six inches) and weighs only 700 g. The preliminary hot test result of the TWT showed 900 W peak power in S-band. The design, fabrication, and characterization of each components that consist the MPM will be discussed. The cold and hot test results will be presented.

A range scanner which calculates ranges by triangulation between the incident angles of laser stripes and the positions of their images on a camera sensor was developed for robotic applications. It uses a solid-state image sensor called Optic RAM instead of a CCD sensor. This sensor chip has three desirable characteristics for the position detection of laser stripes in images: it thresholds the image, detecting only the brighter stripes in binary form; it is an image memory; and pixel values can be addressed randomly in the image. Thus, the design does not require an A/D converter or a frame buffer and is consequently inexpensive. For improved performance, only the image region next to the previous stripe location is searched, and a 64-KB lookup table stored in RAM is indexed by incident laser angles and stripe addresses to output range data. A 128*256 range image is produced in about 20 s. This is reasonably fast considering that this process requires analyzing 256 images. The speed bottleneck is the low sensitivity of the optic RAM chip, which requires a long exposure time per frame (60 ms), corresponding to half the standard video frame rate. Simple calibration methods using planar patterns of parallel lines are presented.< >

Synthesis of Polycarbazole (PCz) is reported using anhydrous ferric chloride as an oxidizing agents. A comparative study of chemically synthesized PCz with electrochemically synthesized is also made. A composite of PCz and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) containing 20% PVC by weight is synthesized and used for the development of solid state pH electrode. The composite was synthesized to improve mechanical strength, stability, and restrict solubility. The pH sensor response is found to be reversible and linear in the pH range 5-10 with sensitivity 35±2mV/pH. PCz and PVC (20 wt%) based pH sensors show potential applications in development of pH transducers based sensors/biosensors.

The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) mission is the fourth mission in the Small Explorer (SMEX) program series at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center. The primary objective of the TRACE mission is to explore the connections between the fine scale magnetic fields in the solar surface and features in the solar photosphere, chromosphere, transition region, and corona. The TRACE spacecraft, including the instrument, weighs 250 kilograms, uses 200 watts of power, and will cost approximately 35 million dollars for the entire mission. It will launch into a Sun-synchronous Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in September 1997 and collect movie-like images of the Sun with one are second spatial and 1 second temporal resolution; these images will be made available on the Internet daily. This paper shows NASA's approach to small spacecraft development It discusses some trades in the design of each subsystem to accommodate instrument and spacecraft heritage as well as new mission requirements. Topics include: a solid state Command and Data Handling (C&DH) system, solid state memory using 20 Megabyte modules approximately 1"/spl times/1"/spl times/0.2" each; a fully digital Attitude Control System (ACS); a guide telescope fine error sensor for spacecraft attitude and control as well as image motion compensation to better than are second levels. Adaptations in ground systems and operations are also included as well as the systems engineering approach.

Pressure sensors with a metallic diaphragm and bonded strain gauge are by far the most widely used sensors in pressure measurement. In this work, we describe a method to fabricate a low power, light weight and low cost pressure sensor using aluminum diaphragm. The diaphragm is hard anodized to get insulating base over which Pt-W (Pt: 92%, W: 8%) thin film strain sensors are sputter deposited for sensing the pressure. Hence, this technique eliminates the application of adhesive to bond the strain gauges to the metallic diaphragm. The required level of insulation resistance (in the range of giga-ohms) between the metal diaphragm and the sputtered stain gauge is provided by the hard anodic film. The hard anodic coating is obtained by the wet electrochemical method with pulsed power supply arrangement. The details of diaphragm fabrication, hard anodization of aluminum, testing, calibration of sensor and its applications are discussed and compared with sensors fabricated from different aluminum alloys (AA2024, AA6061 and AA7075).
