A high efficiency two stage MMIC power amplifier has been designed to meet the requirements of a 64 element transmit phased array antenna operating at 8.2 GHz. The array will provide a high speed data communication link for the NASA GSFC new millennium program. The array is to be installed on the Earth observing scientific satellite EO-1 scheduled for launch in 1999. The two stage MMIC amplifier cell includes an on chip gate bias reference. It provides 23 dB small signal gain, 45% PAE, and requires only 1 square millimeter of die area.

We report the development of a CdZnTe gamma ray imager whose advantages over the conventional Anger camera include: 1) improved contrast and spatial resolution resulting from superior energy resolution and unambiguous position determination and 2) the small size and weight and high reliability inherent in an all-solid-state construction. It provides high energy resolution and peak efficiency by incorporating Digirad's new SpectrumPlus/sup TM/ detector technology. The new imager employs a modular design, in which each 1"/spl times/1" module incorporates a monolithic 64-element CdZnTe detector array and ASIC-based circuitry that provides signal conditioning for every channel, identification of valid events and addressing functions. Imagers with a wide range of sizes and shapes can be assembled by timing modules together on a specially designed signal routing board.

We are developing a range of sphincter sensors for use in Gastroenterology and Urology diagnostic applications, such as Reflux and Urinary Incontinence. Urinary Incontinence costs the NHS in the UK around pound600 million per annum so there is a clear need for improved diagnostic methods such as the sensors being developed. As part of this process a reusable interface unit will be developed which can connect to existing diagnostic equipment thus reducing the impact on the clinicians using the products developed. Initially the interface unit will communicate to the equipment by the use of wires and with future iterations it will enable the clinician to carry out ambulatory studies by storing the data remotely and then wirelessly transmitting the data to the diagnostic equipment. The current methods of measuring sphincter closures are water perfused and solid-state micro-tip catheters. Both have advantages and disadvantages - The water-perfused catheters are slow to respond, single use and also can be tricky to set-up correctly. The solid-state micro-tip catheters are quick to respond, very expensive and are re-usable which has contamination issues. The products developed within Healthy Aims will overcome these shortcomings and will enable clinicians to obtain fast accurate diagnostic results. To date the project has developed a gauge that meets the specifications and has identified a number of different ways in which to manufacture the final device and is confident that by the end of the project a urethral sensor will be going through clinical trials. A number of clinical education seminars have been held to increase the awareness of the project and to ensure that the development is in-line with current clinical thinking. The future of wireless diagnostics for Gastroenterology and Urology will enable more 'natural' diagnosis and possibly treatment of patients suffering with certain conditions. Phased arrays have demonstrated great potential in 5/6G communication, radar and sensor applications [1 -4]. To achieve excellent performance, phased arrays require lownoise and high-linearity front-ends [5]. Most importantly, arrays demand uniform performance from all elements for optimum receiving G/T value and transmission effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) [6]. Figure 14.7.1 exemplifies it with an array whose antenna element has 3dBi uniform gain on one side and no radiation on the other side. When all elements in an 8×1 linear array with a λ/2 space have identical characteristics, the array presents a 19dBi gain in the normal direction. Any temperature change in the array can be decomposed into an absolute temperature change superposed with a relative temperature variation. When the absolute temperature increases, the frontend gain decreases by as much as -0.1dB/°C [1]. When there is non-uniform solar radiation or heat generation inside the array, the relative temperature variation may present a gradient or a parabolic distribution. Taking a 64×1 array as an example, when there is a gain/phase mismatch with an average value of 0.125dB/1.25° between adjacent elements in a parabolic distribution locating at the center of the array, the formed beam presents a 1.4dBi main-lobe reduction in the normal direction and an 11.9dBi side-lobe degradation, shown in Fig. 14.7.1. It also shows an active array receiver front-end highlighting all the temperature-sensitive blocks. Calibration can adjust temperature-dependent performances [7]. However, periodic calibration inevitably takes time overhead and prevents array systems from full-time operations. Digital background calibration allows systems to operate uninterrupted, but may induce antenna boresight instability due to abrupt gain/phase change. A cost-effective method for simultaneous real-time acquisition, processing and storage of raw 64-bit detector pair packets for 3-D PET has remained an elusive goal. Bus bandwidths, coupled with the complexity of the rebinning calculations, have limited the count rates at which lossless data collection and processing could be performed. Online rebinning has been the method of choice for processing raw detector pair packets; however, high-count rate applications such as Rubidium 3-D PET studies can saturate current online rebinning technology. In addition, some rebinning algorithms push the capacity of the Siemens' online rebinner (PDR) to process the incoming packets in real-time. The Stream Buffer architecture has recently been proposed as a solution to the current challenges of processing 3-D PET event packets. This architecture has now been realized with the development of the PETLINK™ Stream Buffer (PSB) card and advances in solid state drive (SSD) technology. This article presents the design and implementation of the PSB as well as considerations in using SSDs for high-count-rate data acquisition.

This study presents the development of a foundry available process scheme for MEMS devices. Such MEMS process scheme enables integration of various MEMS sensors with Pirani gauge. In applications, this study has employed such bulk Si with embedded poly plug process scheme to demonstrate various MEMS devices of different vacuum requirement, including resonators, accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometers on single Si wafer. Moreover, a monolithically integrated silicon-based Pirani vacuum gauge to provide in situ pressure monitor for each device is also demonstrated.

In this paper an energy-autonomous fully integrated photovoltaic driven harvesting solution for wireless sensor node applications is proposed. Photo diodes in parallel connection are used as on-chip micro solar cells. In order to provide the highest efficiency for ambient harvesting purposes, the n-well to p-substrate junction, which gives a negative voltage related to the p-substrate, is used. A test chip in a 130 nm CMOS technology, with different solarcell configurations was designed and investigated. Numerous performance measurements were carried out in order to compare the on-chip solar cells. The achieved fill factor is 78 % at 25klux and 42℃. A charge pump circuit including a flying capacitor driver which allows the usage of the generated negative voltage is also presented.

There has been increasing demand for high-reality video systems. Thus, there has been research and development into ultra-high-definition television (UDTV) schemes for the next-generation television broadcasting system called "Super Hi-Vision" (SHV). This system aims to improve viewing experience using higher-resolution pictures. A pixel count of 7680x4320 and frame rate of 120fps are defined as full-spec parameter values for the SHV video signal. The total pixel data output rate of full-spec SHV image sensors will be 48Gb/s or greater. Several image sensors have been developed for UDTV or digital cinema applications, but they still do not fulfill SHV specifications.

We report the development of magnetically-driven, 100μm in typical diameter, core-shell microcapsules for the on-demand and local delivery of encapsulated drug agents. These microcapsules are fabricated through a multi-stage microfluidic/optofluidic flow-focusing device with oil-based core and thermoresponsive polymer shell. In the prototype capsules, the shell structure is constructed by UV-curable polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) with embedded 20%w/w poly N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm) nanogels and 0.5%w/w magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (10 nm in diameter). Experimentally, the releases of the oil fluorescent dye from the core of the capsules have been successfully demonstrated by remotely triggering the capsules with induction heating. As such, this drug delivery scheme could be useful for remotely-triggered, site-specific applications.

For the first time, the 65nm high performance transistor technology and the highly compacted double stacked S/sup 3/ SRAM cell with a size of 25F/sup 2/, and 0.16/spl mu/m/sup 2/ has been combined for providing the high density and high density solutions which can make the breakthrough in the field of the cache memory products and the network memory products. The SSTFT (single-crystal silicon thin film transistor) is used not only for cell transistors but also for peripheral transistors. The selective Co silicidation techniques is developed for low resistance. By utilizing this technology, the high performance 288Mb synchronous SRAM product will be fabricated.
