In this paper we investigate the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays selectively inscribed in a multicore fiber for a different sensor and laser applications. Particularly, wavelength-switchable and tunable fiber laser was realized based on uniform and non-uniform FBGs precisely positioned in the selected cores. A quasi-distributed 3D shape sensor based on FBG array inscribed in a multicore fiber with helically twisted side cores was fabricated and applied for shape reconstruction of papillotome. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

The MDA/AS is developing advanced capabilities in the IR sensor area for ballistic missile defense. Infrared sensors play an important role to every layer of ballistic missile defense systems. Current missile defense systems use infrared sensors with material systems such as InSb and HgCdTe. They are sufficient to counter current threat level. However, with the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) new capability based acquisition, the Advanced Systems (AS) of MDA is pushing the state-of-the-art of infrared technology to a higher level. The new infrared sensors will have the capability to cover a broad range of spectrum, have higher sensitivity, uniformity and operabilities, large format, multicolor, with a much better manufacturability and affordability. Examples are strained layer type-ii superlattices, quantum well infrared photodetectors, HgCdTe on Si, PbSnTe, and other novel concepts. This presentation will discuss what IR sensors are used in current missile defense systems, what is new in technology development, and it's system applications.

InAs/GaSb superlattices are characterized by a broken-gap type ii band alignment. Their effective band gap can be engineered to match mid to long wavelength infrared (IR) photon energies. Fraunhofer IAF has developed image detectors for threat warning systems based on this material system that are capable of spatially and temporally coincident detection in two mid-IR wavelength ranges. We review the present status of the processing technology, report continuous improvements achieved in key areas of detector performance, including defect density and noise behavior, and present initial results for statistical characterization of ensembles of detector elements with respect to diode characteristics and noise.

The development of novel Monolithic Active Pixel sensor (MAPS) technologies has been pursued by several collaborations in the last two decades. The ARCADIA project aims to design fully depleted MAPS for medical, space, HEP and X-ray detection applications, that can be produced with a commercial 110 nm CMOS production process. Among the test structures of the first two engineering runs of the project, passive pixel arrays with different pitches and layouts were included. The main characteristics of the produced devices in terms of dark current, depletion voltage, punch through current and pixel capacitance have been evaluated from IV and CV characteristics of the pixel arrays. Groups of four samples have been extracted from as many different positions within each wafer and electrically characterized to obtain information on the variability in the pixel operating voltage range and in the pixel dark current, reflecting variations related to the employed production process. The experimental data demonstrated a good uniformity in the considered parameters for different sample positions within the produced wafers, as well as for samples extracted from different wafers with the same substrate type.

We review two complementary approaches to the development of white light solid-state sources. The first approach, which involves polychromatic LED modules, is targeted at advanced optimization of spectral power distribution in order to establish an optimal trade-off between luminous efficacy and color rendering. We apply a stochastic method of optimization of a white-light source that relies on additive color mixing of the emissions from colored primary LEDs. We present the results on optimized spectra for all-semiconductor lamps composed of four primary LEDs with the line widths typical of present AlGaInP and AlInGaN technologies. We point out the problem of the lack of efficient yellow-green (570 nm) emitters required for polychromatic lamps with four and more primary LEDs. The second approach is based on the development of AlInGaN-based UV emitters that can be tailored to directly excite different phosphors without sensitizers. AlInGaN materials system demonstrated potential for making UV LEDs with a high power and short wavelengths required for such applications. This has been achieved by using Strain Energy Band Engineering (SEBE) and Pulsed Atomic Epitaxy (PALE) techniques. SEBE relies on quaternary AlGaInN compounds for controlling strain and band offset and for producing UV emitters with improved device performance. PALE allows us to incorporate the required significant amount of indium (few percent) in AlGaN, since it can be performed at lower growth temperatures required for In incorporation. Further improvements in materials quality of AlInGaN layers with a high molar fraction of Al will be achieved by using bulk AIN substrates.

Photodetectors in the non-visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are essential for security, defense and space science as well as industrial and scientific applications. The research activities at Fraunhofer IAF cover a broad range in the infrared (IR) regime. Whereas short-wavelength IR (SWIR, <1.7 mu m) detectors are realized by InGaAs/InP structures, InAs/GaSb type-ii superlattice (T2SL) infrared detectors are developed for the spectral bands from mid( MWIR, 3-5 mu m) to long-wavelength IR (LWIR, 8-12 mu m). We report on the extension of the superlattice empirical pseudopotential method (SEPM) to 300 K for the design of LWIR heterostructures for operation near room temperature. Recently, we have also adapted heterostructure concepts to our well established bi-spectral T2SL MWIR detector resulting in a dark current density below 2 x 10-9 A/cm(2) for a cut-off wavelength close to 5 mu m. Finally, we present first results obtained with a gated viewing system based on our InGaAs/InAlAs/InP avalanche photodiode arrays.

We report on the development of InAs/GaSb type-ii superlattice focal plane arrays (FPAs) for missile warning systems in airborne platforms. The FPA fabrication technology was developed on the basis of monospectral superlattices for the MWIR (3-5 mu m) spectral range. A monospectral. 288x384 MWIR camera with 24 mu m pixel pitch, a noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD) better than 14 mK and a background-limited performance (BLIP) up to 92 K is demonstrated. Based on the monospectral technology, the first bispectral superlattice camera was realized. The dual color 288x384 superlattice camera features simultaneous, pixel-registered detection of both spectral channels between 3-4 mu m and 4-5 mu m with a NETD better than 30 mK and 17 m-K, respectively. Hence, spatial or temporal registration problems, which are common to most dual color and dual band infrared imagers are solved with the new bispectral MWIR missile alerting sensor.

Although the rapid development of 2-D focal plane arrays of thermal infrared (IR) detectors has led to remarkable progress in uncooled IR imaging technology, a major limitation of these sensors is the lack of true on-chip spectral discrimination. Multi-spectral detection capabilities enable rapid, efficient and multi-dimensional scene interpretation that is especially beneficial to advanced IR imaging systems for early threat warning and target recognition applications. We propose a novel design for a monolithic micromachined array of bolometric detectors capable of multi-spectral imaging in the long-wave IR (7-14 mu m) region. The central ingredient of this approach is to employ planar multi-mode antenna structures to efficiently couple incident electromagnetic radiation to a microbolometeric sensing element that is much smaller than the IR wavelength. The wavelength selectivity of such an antenna-coupled detector can be tuned by optimizing its multiple geometric parameters. We present a planar microbolometer design that can accomplish 3-color LWIR imaging with no moving parts analogous to solid-state color videography in the visible region. The proposed effort targets applications of uncooled color IR imaging where the benefits in space, power, weight and complexity will have a significant impact.

Compact robust hydraulic actuators are very important for space related applications because of their capability of producing much larger forces per unite volume/mass than existing technologies. The major components of these actuators are PZT stacks (pusher) and microvalves. The PZT pusher works at high frequencies to produce large flow rates (proportional to displacement traveled) and high pressures. As a component of the hydraulic actuator, the microvalves are challenged in matching the requirements of the PZT in terms of high operational frequencies, large flow rates and high-pressure support capabilities. In order to fulfill these requirements, the authors have developed robust self-assembled solid nickel micro valve arrays consisting of 80 single micro check valves, to achieve the required flow rate (> 10 cc/second). A single micro check valve consists of an inlet channel (200 mu m in diameter), a specially designed valve flap held by four identical micro beams, and outlet channels. All these structures are made from electroformed nickel and are self-assembled during a novel in situ UV-LIGA fabrication process. Finite element simulation results show that the micro check valve has a 1(st) resonant frequency of 16 kHz and is able to support pressures greater than 10 MPa. Test results show the flow rate is 19 cc/s at a pressure difference of 100 psi, and is roughly proportional to the pressure applied. Based on Poiseuille's law, it is reasonable to predict larger flow rates if higher-pressure differences are applied.

Situation awareness and accurate Target Identification (TID) are critical requirements for successful battle management. Ground vehicles can be detected, tracked, and in some cases imaged using airborne or space-borne microwave radar. Obscurants such as camouflage net and/or tree canopy foliage can degrade the performance of such radars. Foliage can be penetrated with long wavelength microwave radar, but generally at the expense of imaging resolution. The goals of the DARPA Jigsaw program include the development and demonstration of high-resolution 3-D imaging laser radar (ladar) sensor technology and systems that can be used from airborne platforms to image and identify military ground vehicles that may be hiding under camouflage or foliage such as tree canopy. With DARPA support, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has developed a rugged and compact 3-D imaging ladar system that has successfully demonstrated the feasibility and utility of this application. The sensor system has been integrated into a UH-1 helicopter for winter and summer flight campaigns. The sensor operates day or night and produces high-resolution 3-D spatial images using short laser pulses and a focal plane array of Geiger-mode avalanche photo-diode (APD) detectors with independent digital time-of-flight counting circuits at each pixel. The sensor technology includes Lincoln Laboratory developments of the microchip laser and novel focal plane arrays. The microchip laser is a passively Q-switched solid-state frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser transmitting short laser pulses (300 ps FWHM) at 16 kilohertz pulse rate and at 532 nm wavelength. The single photon detection efficiency has been measured to be > 20% using these 3202 Silicon Geiger-mode APDs at room temperature. The APD saturates while providing a gain of typically > 106.
