Since the introduction of lightweight ccdcameras, these have rapidly acquired a large part of the market for news gathering equipment. Their advantages in operation are so important that despite performances sometimes inferior to those of tube cameras, customers' choice is now always for ccd, in an ENG application the situation for top of the range studio cameras today is totally the opposite, tube cameras only being available. The design and theoretical analysis of solid-state image sensors for high-definition television (HDTV) cameras are described in terms of performance. Desirable performance characteristics include low noise, high sensitivity, high resolution etc. The authors have found that there are many problems involved with developing HDTV camera image sensors based only on current technologies and advancement. Image-sensor unit cells and cell arrays, including low-noise parallel signal processing on ccd image sensors, are examined in detail to optimize the trade-off between aliasing and modulation transfer functions. A new image-sensor architecture, the Pre-Processing Image sensor, is proposed. Its performance is expected to exhibit high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low aliasing spectra and high resolution.

Widely used line and area sensor architectures, photoelements, and readout structures are all reported, including topics such as color sensors, high resolution imagers, antiblooming techniques, and low cost cameras. Trends in the use of NMOS, CMOS, ccd, and custom fabrication technologies are discussed. Approaches adopted in North America, Japan, and Europe are reveiwed and compared.

This paper will discuss the utilization of solidstate imagers in complete cameras and camera systems. The discussion will be divided into three sections;the first dealing with Line Scan cameras, the second, dealing with Matrix cameras, and the third, dealing with cameras which do not image directly through a lens but rather utilize such things as fiber optics and intensifier tubes. Within each section appropriate critical parameters will be emphasized. Such parameters include resolution, acquisiton rate, monochrome versus color, dynamic range, noise, size and ruggedness.

The experiments and first realisations of solid-state colour cameras have proved a very promising future for a device which looks particularly adapted to applications such as videocommunication services and home video. In the field of researches on new wideband communication terminals, the C.C.E.T.T. (dept : Production-Présentation des Images) has implemented a real-time digital simulator for the study of various kinds of cameras incorporating 3, 2 or 1 solid-statesensor(s).
