Traditional imaging sensors for computer vision, such as ccd and CMOS arrays, have well-known limitations with regard to detecting objects that are very small in size (that is, a small object image compared to the pixel size), are viewed in a low contrast situation, are moving very fast (with respect to the sensor integration time), or are moving very small distances compared to the sensor pixel spacing. Any one or a combination of these situations can foil a traditional ccd or CMOS sensor array. Alternative sensor designs derived from biological vision systems promise better resolution and object detection in situations such as these. The patent-pending biomimetic vision sensor based on Musca domestica (the common house fly) is capable of reliable object rendition in spite of challenging movement and low contrast conditions. We discuss some interesting early results of comparing the biomimetic sensor to commercial ccd sensors in terms of contrast and motion sensitivity in situations such as those listed above.

A highly sensitive image sensor for single photon imaging has been developed. The sensor (referred as an intensified EBccd here) contains a photocathode, a microchannel plate (MCP) and an electron-sensitive ccd in a vacuum tube. In response to incident photons, electrons emitted from the photocathode are multiplied once by the MCP, further by the ccd and read out. Either an image intensifier containing MCPs or an EBccd containing an electron-sensitive ccd has sensitivity for single photon by itself, however, many intense white spot-noise appear on output image and degrade the image quality seriously at such high-gain operation. In the case of intensified EBccd reported here, since both the MCP and the electron-sensitive ccd are used for electron multiplication, high gain for single photon detection is available in total at low gains of both devices. This operation reduces the noise drastically, and improves the image quality. We have developed the intensified EBccd with a GaAsP photocathode for high quantum efficiency, and evaluated the performance. Comparing with conventional cameras, such as an EM-ccd and an image intensifier, the intensified EBccd shows superior detection capability at especially low-light level, that is single photon imaging.

This paper presents an ultrahigh density data storage device based upon a 3-dimensional network of magnetic nanowires. The device is entirely solid state and can achieve storage densities comparable with hard disk drive densities. It is well suited to small form factor applications such as mobile phones and digital cameras, where the manufacturing costs of hard disk drives and difficulty in scaling to small thicknesses make solid state solutions attractive.

Pixel noise suppression via SoC management of tapered reset in a 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor

Correlated double sampling is widely used in imaging arrays to eliminate noise generated when a ccd's sense capacitance or a CMOS sensor's photodiode is reset after signal integration and readout. Instead, we suppress photodiode kTC noise using a SoC implementation for progressive reset;supporting SoC components include a feedback amplifier having elements distributed amongst the pixel and column buffer, a tapered reset clock waveform, and reset timing generator. The reset method does not swell pixel area, compel processing of the correlated reset and signal values, or require additional memory. Theoretical analysis is presented along with experimental results. Integrated in a 1920 by 1080 imager having 5 mu m by 5 mu m pixels in 0.25-mu m CMOS, measured random noise for 5.5-fF detector capacitance is similar to 8 e- to 225 MHz video rate with image lag <0.12%. Random noise of similar to 30 e- is otherwise predicted and achieved using conventional reset. sensor S/N ratio with progressive readout is >= 52 dB at 60 Hz and 72 Hz frame rate.

This paper presents a methodology to construct a micro system destined to evaluate a several kind of control schemes for arrayed (i.e. cell-structured) micro actuators. Conceptually, the system is composed of a mechanical layer, sensing layer and control layer. This time, we built and operated an emulation system to examine the efficiency of various feedback control schemes;in the system, the ciliary actuator arrays was used for the mechanical layer, a ccd camera for the sensing layer and Programmable Logic Device(PLD) for the control layer.

For the large format high-performance optoelectronic Earth remote sensing (ERS) system "Resource-DK" specialized Phccd image sensor "Kruiz" meant for operation in a TDI mode was developed. Phccd photozone size is 1024(H) x 128(V) active pixels, pixel size is 9 x 9 mu m(2). Step-by-step electronic adjustment of the Phccd responsivity is performed by variation of the TDI stages: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8. The device has two readout shift registers and two output amplifiers and this allows to read the data from the photozone twice faster. "Electronic target" input device enables full tests of the optoelectronic converter onboard without illumination of the photozone. Unpacked chip construction allows to assemble large focal plane arrays, which's length of photozone is not limited by the Phccd format. Here are the main characteristics of the device: full well capacity -120 000 electrons;dynamic range -2500;charge transfer efficiency in any direction - more then 0.99998 per transfer;maximum quantum efficiency -0.33 (at 720 nm).

Imaging digital systems are widely used nowadays. ccd and CMOS sensors are embedded in a lot of metrologic devices for metrology in a lot of devices. One of these applications is the characterization of laser beams. For these kinds of applications, it is necessary to use cameras with high dynamic range. Some algorithms have been proposed in the past for this purpose. But, normally they enhance not only the dynamic range but the noise sensor too. In this paper we have applied an automatic algorithm to classify the different noise processes appearing in a ccd matrix. The method is based on a principal component expansion of the covariance matrix of some frames taken with the camera. It is possible to classify not only non-uniformity noise of the detector matrix, but also those contributions due to electronics and electronic interference and vibrations. Some of these noise processes represent only a very low amount of the total noise. A method to filter these noises is also presented.
