image indexing using composite regional color channels features

Color indexing is a technique by which images in the database could be retrieved on the bases of their color content. In this paper, we propose a new set of color features for representing color images, and show how they can be computed and used efficiently to retrieve images that possess certain similarity. These features are based on the first three moments of each color channel. Two differences distinguish this work from previous work reported in the literature. First, we compute the third moment of the color channel distribution around the second moment not around the first moment. The second moment is less sensitive to small luminance changes, than the first moment. Second we combine all three moment values in a single descriptor. This reduces the number of floating point values needed to index the image and hence speeds up the search. To give the user flexibility in terms of defining his center of attention during query time, the proposed approach divides the image into five geometrical regions and allows the user to give different weights for each region to designate its importance. The approach has been tested on databases of 205 images of airplanes and natural scenes. It proved to be insensitive to small rotations and small translations in the image and yielded a better hit rate than similar algorithms previously reported in the literature.

There is a growing research interest in reliable content-based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques specialized for biomedical image retrieval. Applicable feature representation and similarity algorithms have to balance conflicting goals of efficient and effective retrieval while allowing queries on important and often subtle biomedical features. In a collection of digitized X-rays of the spine, such as that from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES ii) maintained by the National Library of Medicine, a typical user may be interested in only a small region of the vertebral boundary pertinent to the pathology: for this experiment, the Anterior Osteophyte (AO). A previous experiment in pathology-based retrieval using partial shape matching (PSM) on a subset from the above collection;about 89% normal vertebrae were correctly retrieved. In contrast only 45% of moderate and severe cases were correctly retrieved, and on the average only 46% of the pathology classes were correctly determined. Further analysis revealed that mere shape matching is insufficient for semantically correct retrieval of pathological cases. This paper describes an automatic 9 point localization algorithm that incorporates reasoning about boundary semantics equivalent to that applied by the content-expert as a step in our enhancements to PSM, and results from initial experiments.

We propose a fully automatic and computationally efficient framework for analysis and summarization of soccer videos using cinematic and object-based features. The proposed framework includes some novel low-level soccer video processing algorithms, such as dominant color region detection, robust shot boundary detection, and shot classification, as well as some higher-level algorithms for goal detection, referee detection, and penalty-box detection. The system can output three types of summaries: i) all slow-motion segments in a game, ii) all goals in a game, and iii) slow-motion segments classified according to object-based features. The first two types of summaries are based on cinematic features only for speedy processing, while the summaries of the last type contain higher-level semantics. The proposed framework is efficient, effective, and robust for soccer video processing. It is efficient in the sense that there is no need to compute object-based features when cinematic features are sufficient for the detection of certain events, e.g. goals in soccer. It is effective in the sense that the framework can also employ object-based features when needed to increase accuracy (at the expense of more computation). The efficiency, effectiveness, and the robustness of the proposed framework are demonstrated over a large data set, consisting of more than 13 hours of soccer video, captured at different countries and conditions.

Abstr. video information automatically from the TV broadcast requires reliable methods for isolating program and commercial segments out of the full broadcast material. In this paper we present the results from cut, static sequence, black frame and text detection for the purpose of isolating non-program segments. These results are evaluated by comparison to human visual inspection using over 13 hours of varied program content. Using cut rate detection alone produced a high recall with a medium precision. Text detection was performed on the commercials and the false positive segments. Adding text detection slightly lowers the recall, however, much higher precision is achieved. A new fast black frame detector algorithm is presented. Black frame detection is important for identifying the commercial boundaries. The results indicate that adding the detection of text in addition to cut rate to reduce the number of false positives appears to be a promising method. Furthermore, by adding the information about the position and size of the text and tracking it through an area should further increase the reliability.

Advancement in technology has made the acquisition and storage of multimedia data easy and inexpensive to the end user. However for effective use of the information available in the multimedia, efficient and accurate retrieval methods are required. Multimedia based retrieval systems extensively used texture based approach to interpret and recognize a scene image. The texture of an image provides clue to the orientation, smoothness, symmetry, shape, regularity and coarness of the surface. The Local Binary Pattern Variance (LBPV) is a texture feature where variance in contrast acts as adaptive factor during computation of local binary pattern (LBP) histogram. The LBP combines both structural and statistical approaches to texture analysis. This paper proposes an LBP Variance based approach to visual content based video retrieval. The proposed approach uses query by example paradigm for retrieving similar clips from the video. Experiments conducted on TRECVID dataset shows the efficacy of proposed approach. We present a local-feature-oriented image indexing and retrieval method based on Kwong and Tang's W-transform. Multiresolution histogram comparison is an effective method for content- based image indexing and retrieval. However, most recent approaches perform multiresolution analysis for whole images but do not exploit the local features present in the images. Since W- transform is featured by its ability to handle images of arbitrary size, with no periodicity assumptions, it provides a natural tool for analyzing local image features and building indexing systems based on such features. In our approach, the histograms of the local features of images are used in the indexing system. The system not only can retrieve images that are similar or identical to the query images but also can retrieve images that contain features specified in the query images, even if the retrieved images as a whole might be very different from the query images. The local-feature-oriented method also provides a speed advantage over the global multiresolution histogram comparison method. The feature-oriented approach is expected to be applicable in managing large-scale image systems such as video databases and medical image databases.

Multimedia data grows fast due to advances in information technologies, creating the demand for efficient video indexing and object retrieval techniques. Traditional methods consume significant computational resources such as storage space and processing time. In this paper we propose an efficient content-based video retrieval system that is based on three main stages. The first stage involves computing the DC-image of each I-frame, from which a summarization process to extract key-frames is performed. During the second stage, a segmentation processes is applied to each key-frame in order to isolate the region of interest within it. Local features are extracted from the resulting area and are stored as the descriptor of the frame. The retrieval stage is carried out by computing the Euclidean distance and determines if its content is related with the video database. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is promising in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

The objective of this work is object retrieval in large scale image datasets, where the object is specified by an image query and retrieval should be immediate at run time in the manner of video Google [28]. We make the following three contributions: (i) a new method to compare SIFT descriptors (RootSIFT) which yields superior performance without increasing processing or storage requirements;(ii) a novel method for query expansion where a richer model for the query is learnt discriminatively in a form suited to immediate retrieval through efficient use of the inverted index;(iii) an improvement of the image augmentation method proposed by Turcot and Lowe [29], where only the augmenting features which are spatially consistent with the augmented image are kept. We evaluate these three methods over a numbers of standard benchmark datasets (Oxford Buildings 5k and 105k, and Paris 6k) and demonstrate substantial improvements in retrieval performance whilst maintaining immediate retrieval speeds. Combining these complementary methods achieves a new state-of-the-art performance on these datasets.
