Illumination invariance is of paramount importance to annotate video sequences stored in large videodatabases consistently. Yet, popular texture analysis methods such as multichannel filtering techniques do not yield illumination-invariant texture representations. In this paper, we assess the effectiveness of three illumination normalisation schemes for texture representations derived from Gabor filter outputs. The schemes aim at overcoming intensity scaling effects due to changes in ilumination conditions. A theoretical analysis and experimental results enable us to select one scheme as the most promising one. In this scheme, a normalising factor is derived at each pixel by combining the energy responses of different filters at that pixel. The scheme overcomes illumination variations well, while still preserving discriminatory textural information. Further statistical analysis may shed light on other interesting properties or limitations of the scheme.

In this paper, we propose a new image feature extraction method for MPEG compressed video. To minimize the MPEG decoding process, we use only DC values for Y, Cr, and Cb components for each macroblock. Then, we can obtain a feature vector using the decoded DC values of Y, Cr, and Cb components for all macroblocks in an I frame. The feature vector consists of histograms for various colors, luminance, and edge types. In obtaining histograms for colors and luminance features, we consider the ratio of contributing pure colors and luminance to the chroma DC values for each macroblock. Then, we update all contributing colors and/or luminance histograms accordingly. Otherwise, if the macro block is classified as an edge block, then we update the corresponding edge type histogram. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed feature extraction method, we apply it to a scene change detection problem.

The Visual Information Systems International conference series is designed to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from diverse areas of computing including computer vision, databases, human–computer interaction, information security, image processing, information visualization and mining, as well as knowledge and information management to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, present their latest results and to advance research and development in the construction and application of visual information systems. Following previous conferences held in Melbourne (1996), San Diego (1997), Amsterdam (1999), Lyon (2000), Taiwan (2002), Miami (2003), San Francisco (2004) and Amsterdam (2005), the Ninth International conference on Visual Information Systems, VISUAL2007, was held in Shanghai, China, June 28–29, 2007. Over the years, the visual information systems paradigm continues to evolve, and the unrelenting exponential growth in the amount of digital visual data underlines the escalating importance of how such data are effectively managed and deployed. VISUAL2007 received 117 submissions from 15 countries and regions. Submitted full papers were reviewed by more than 60 international experts in the field. This volume collects 54 selected papers presented at VISUAL2007. Topics covered in these papers include image and video retrieval, visual biometrics, intelligent visual information processing, visual data mining, ubiquitous and mobile visual information systems, visual semantics, 2D/3D graphical visual data retrieval and applications of visual information systems.

The rapid growth in image databases is presenting new research challenges in wide range of areas that span image indexing, image retrieval, authentication, and recognition. This paper presents a new algorithm for image indexing and authentication. Although the combination of wavelet transform and principal components analysis has been used in some image processing areas but they have not been used for image indexing and authentication before. The proposed algorithm is based on the extraction of selected features of images using principal components analysis and wavelet packets. The proposed algorithm addresses three main concerns: (i) search accuracy;(ii) time efficiency;and (iii) storage requirements. We use wavelet packets to decompose the image to its fundamental subbands then we apply PCA method to extract the features of the images. The extracted features are used to create image signatures. We have tested our algorithm on the ORL Database of Faces (the AT&T laboratories Cambridge Database), PIE database, Caltech-UCSD Birds 200 and other miscellaneous images from different sources. We compared our results with two other methods [2] and [13] and found that our method retrieved the query image with 100% efficiency which significantly higher than that of method [13] and it is much faster than both methods. © 2015 IEEE.

We present a framework for content based query and retrieval of information from large video databases. This framework enables content based retrieval of video sequences by characterizing the sequences using motion, texture and colorimetry cues. This characterization is biologically inspired and results in a compact parameter space where every segment of video is represented by an 8 dimensional vector. Searching and retrieval is done in real-time with high accuracy in this parameter space. The present version of the videoBook has 165 video sequences, each 15 seconds long at 30 frames a second representing storage of 65 Giga bytes. The videoBook is able to search and retrieve video sequences with 92% accuracy in real-time. Experiments thus demonstrate that the characterization is capable of extracting higher level structure from raw pixel values.

A novel approach pertaining to the fast and efficient retrieval and storage of video sequences utilizing MPEG-1/2 motion vectors is presented in this paper. A clip first must be segmented into consistent video segments based on the basic editing effects - cuts, dissolves, and wipes. All group of pictures (GOPs) are then extracted from the clip and decomposed further into I-frames and P-frames (B-frames are disregarded). The initial frame of the sequence is manually segmented into objects, and the selected objects are automatically tracked through the entire sequence using MPEG-1/2 motion vectors. Features pertaining to the edge histogram are extracted from each tracked object (I/P frames only) and then maintained with the associated frame. An example image or video clip is then presented to the system and the 5 best matching images are retrieved. Results are shown for the standard video sequences such as foreman, tennis, etc.

This paper presents a simple and effective pre-processing method developed for the segmentation of MPEG compressed video sequences. The proposed method for scene-cut detection only involves computing the number of bits spent for each frame (encoding cost data), thus avoiding decoding the bitstream. The information is separated into I-, P-, B-frames, thus forming 3 vectors which are independently processed by a new peak detection algorithm based on overcomplete filter banks and on joint thresholding using a confidence number. Each processed vector yields a set of candidate frame numbers, i.e. 'hints' of positions where scene-cuts may have occurred. The 'hints' for all frame types are recombined into one frame sequence and clustered into scene cuts. The algorithm was not designed to distintuish among types of cuts but rather to indicate its position and duration. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in detecting abrupt scene changes as well as gradual transitions. For precision demanding applications, the algorithm can be used with a low confidence factor just to select the frames that are worth being investigated by a more complex algorithm. The algorithm is not particularly tailored to MPEG and can be applied to most video compression techniques.

Important issues in multimedia information systems are the development of efficient storage layout models and effective retrieval system to manage multimedia databases. In multimedia information systems, the capability for interaction with video media type is still extremely limited due to a huge amount of video databases. We present the Fast Polynomial Regression Transform (FPRT) based metadata scheme for manipulating the large video database in the paper. This new metadata scheme provides the simplification of the query mechanism and the improvement of communication in multimedia systems. The main advantage of the proposed approach is the reduction of the data storage space while preserving much video content information. Other advantages are computational simplicity for video information coding and accuracy for video indexing. Visual tools for video representation and browsing are also presented.

Multimedia data is generally stored in compressed form in order to efficiently utilize the available storage facilities. Access to archives is dependent on our ability to browse compressed multimedia information-retrieval and tracking from coded video databases. In this paper, a novel visual search engine for video retrieval and tracking from compressed multimedia databases is proposed. The goal of the project is the implementation of a visual browser that operates in a distributed environment where users initiate video searches and retrieve relevant video information simultaneously from multiple video archives. Being presented with a query in the form of template images of objects, the system operates on the compressed video to find the images or video sequences where those objects are present and their positions in the image. Upon user's request, the system will decompress and display only the video sequences of interest.
