In this paper we present a multiresolution approach for video indexing and feature matching of subband coded video databases. Subband coding refers to a coding technique where the input images are quantized after being decomposed into several narrow spatial frequency bands by filtering and decimation. Five different approaches were tested for scene change detection which is applied only on the lowest subband for computational efficiency. Two kinds of scene changes, abrupt and smoothly accumulated scene changes, mark the beginning of new scene segments. An index for each scene segment is the histogram of two representative frames, which we take to be the first and the last frame of the scene for simplicity. Using the approach of query by example, the index matching algorithm takes a multi-resolution approach by hierarchically comparing histograms at different resolutions. The search algorithm for the match between example query and its target scene segment starts from the coarsest resolution, and moves to the next finer resolution until a single match is obtained or the finest resolution is reached. Experimental results are presented, and the proposed indexing technique appears to be promising for its computational efficiency and its inherent hierarchical search procedure.

image and video indexing techniques play a key role in content-based searching in multimedia databases. A novel efficient video similarity search approach for content-based video retrieval in a large storage device is proposed. A compressed domain feature is used to classify the scenes of a video sequence. The performance of the said feature in classifying the scenes is evaluated by considering different feature lengths. Subsequently, a novel searching algorithm is proposed based on entropy of the image. This method incorporates temporal information of the video during video retrieval. Additionally, the proposed system has the facility to query both by video and by image. The 92.3% accuracy of the proposed method exceeded that of the VA-file 81.0% and OVA-file 76.4% methods and the computational complexity was lower than the VA-file method. This demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2021 IEEE.

Fast edge map extraction from MPEG compressed video data for video parsing

For the last few years, shot boundary detection has been recognized as an important research issue on video retrieval. Also as a preliminary step for the task, it is essential to extract salient features from videos. Recently, it has become common to perform the two tasks in compressed domain to alleviate their computational costs. In this paper, we propose novel shot boundary detection technique, which uses two feature images, or DC and edge images, extracted directly from MPEG compressed video. While a DC image can be easily obtained, edge image extraction usually requires considerable computational burden. For fast edge image extraction, we suggest to utilize only a few AC coefficients of each DCT block in motion compensated P-frames and B-frames as well as I-frames. This drastically reduces the computational burden compared to edge extraction in the spatial domain. In order to further reduce the computational burden, another edge image extraction technique is also suggested on the basis of AC prediction using DC images. By using the edge energy diagram obtained from edge images and histograms from DC images, shot boundaries such as abrupt transitions, fades, and dissolves are detected automatically. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques are fast and effective.

Most current image retrieval systems use holistic comparisons that require a global match between images or presegmented object in images. However, often the user of an image database system is interested in a local match between images. For example, ''Find images from the database with something like this anywhere in the image'' or ''Find images with something like this in some region of any image in the database'' or ''Find images with this spatial configuration of regions like this.'' In this paper, we provide an overview of a new framework that should help to allow these types of queries to be answered efficiently. In order to illustrate the usefulness of our framework, we have developed a complete image retrieval system based on local color information. Our system features fully automatic insertion and very efficient query execution, rivaling the efficiency of systems that can only handle global image comparisons. The query execution engine, called the imageGREP Engine, can process queries at a speed of approximately 3000 images per second (or better) on a standard workstation when the index can be stored in main memory. In the future, we believe our framework should be used in other domains and applications, to handle queries based on texture or other material properties and perhaps domain specific image properties.

Multimedia Information Systems are experiencing a tremendous growth as a direct consequence of the popularity and pervasive use of world wide web. As a consequence, it is becoming increasingly important to provide efficient and flexible solutions for accessing and retrieving multimedia data. images and video are emerging as significant data types in multimedia systems. And yet, most commercial systems are still text and key-word based and do not fully exploit the image content of these systems. We believe that there is an opportunity to build a novel interactive multimedia system for some specific applications in electronic commerce. In this paper we present an overview of our approach, the rationale behind it and the problems that are inherent in building such a system. We address some of the technical issues in representing and analysing image primitive features. These are the building blocks of any such systems. They can be generalized into a much broader range of applications as well.

This paper proposes an integrated system for supporting content-based video retrieval and browsing over networks. An automatic semantic video object extraction technique for providing more compact video representation is developed. The video images are first partitioned into a set of homogeneous regions with accurate boundaries by integrating the results of color edge detection and region growing procedures. The object seeds, which are the intuitive and representative part of the semantic objects, are detected from these obtained homogeneous image regions. The semantic objects are then generated by a seeded region aggregation or a human interaction procedure. These obtained semantic objects are tracked along the time axis for exploiting their temporal correspondences among frames. Given the semantic video objects represented by a set of visual features, a seeded semantic video content clustering technique is developed for providing more effective video indexing, retrieval and browsing.

This paper presents a formal framework for designing search algorithms which can identify target images by the spatial distribution of color, edge and texture attributes. The framework is based on a multiscale representation of both the image data, and the associated parameter space that must be searched. We define a general form for the distance function which insures that branch and bound search can be used to find the globally optimal match. Our distance function depends on the choice of a convex measure of feature distance. For this purpose, we propose the L(1) norm and some other alternative choices such as the Kullback-Liebler and divergence distances. Experimental results indicate that the multiscale approach can improve search performance with minimal computational cost.

Intelligent access to multimedia databases for "naive user" should probably be based on queries formulation by "intelligent agents". These agents should "understand" the semantics of the contents, learn user preferences and deliver to the user a subset of the source contents, while keeping the freedom of choice of the user. Such systems should interpret multimedia contents in terms of multiple audiovisual objects (from video to visual or audio object), and on actions and scenarios. In our project we have developed a method for image segmentation into semantic objects, even in the case of still images. We use this method, and user-defined collections of such objects, and to characterize stories contents. For this purpose, we also use audio information from selected parts of the video. Stories are characterized by a set of visual concepts and words, and semantic similarity between stories is evaluated based on information retrieval methods. The system learns user preferences, and incrementally builds a user profile, which is used to present relevant stories in appropriate order. This approach was used to build a mockup of a simple "plus" engine, which is presently being experimented.

This paper describes a novel system for real-time object extraction from a moving video image. The object extraction method employed in this system has two features. The first one is multi-channel thresholding in a color space for extracting a target with several colors as a single object. The color space is normalized by luminance to make the process robust against light intensity fluctuations. The other feature is a key algorithm, called sequential growing, which exploits interfield correlation of a video image and realizes field-rate operation. In this algorithm, a binary image representing a target object is generated by growing an initially given mask image horizontally and vertically until whole object is extracted. We have also fabricated a 0.8 micrometers CMOS chip to incorporate the system into a compact video camera, which has successfully extracted objects in a number of general scenes.

In the European project SMASH [http://***/pda/smash] mass-market storage systems for domestic use are under study. Besides the storage technology that is developed in this project, the related objective of user-friendly browsing/query of video data is studied as well. Key issues in developing a user-friendly system are (1) minimizing the user-intervention in preparatory steps (extraction and storage of representative information needed for browsing/query), (2) providing an acceptable representation of the stored video content in view of a higher automation level, (3) the possibility for performing these steps directly on the incoming stream at storage time, and (4) parameter-robustness of algorithms used for these steps. This paper proposes and validates novel approaches for automation of mentioned preparatory phases. A detection method for abrupt shot changes is proposed, using locally computed threshold based on a statistical model for frame-to-frame differences. For the extraction of representative frames (key frames) an approach is presented which distributes a given number of key frames over the sequence depending on content changes in a temporal segment of the sequence. A multimedia database is introduced, able to automatically store all bibliographic information about a recorded video as well as a visual representation of the content without any manual intervention from the user.
