In an architectural database that is to be used by architects, urbanists, sociologists, geometers, etc., querying must be simplified. The aim of this work is to retrieve the images of a building that best fit a specified point of view. Original data are provided in DXF and TIFF formats (maps and images respectively.) A loose linking between these two types of information is obtained through textual attributes. However, the same building is photographed several times and more than a single building can appear on a picture. After determining the point of view by simple ''clicks'' on a map, we take advantage of the geometrical description of the building in order to draw its outline. Then, the images that have been textually associated with the selected building undergo a five-steps image-processing algorithm: conversion from the RGB color-space to intensity component, Nagao filtering, oriented gradient filtering, thresholding, and correlation-based hierarchical full search matching. If the building objects are not completely masked by natural ones, the ''rectangular'' shapes of frontage and side walls correspond well to the sketch and the requested images are returned to the user.

We present a technique for indexing the directional detail and smoothness present in an image. By directional detail we imply strong directional activity in the horizontal, vertical and diagonal direction present in areas of detail and texture. By smoothness we refer to the smooth or low frequency areas of the image which do not contain prominent edge or texture activity. We map the directional information into 3-d vectors, which are then used to build N-d histograms. These histograms can then be used as database indices which can be queried using histogram techniques.

This paper proposes an image retrieval system which searches a database for images similar to a target imagined by a user. The system uses image features, rather than keywords, and retrieves images by reducing a multidimensional feature space generated by the image feature vectors. First, the system presents the user some sample images with a suitable feature vector value and requires the user's interaction to obtain information on which image is similar to the target he/she has in his/her mind. Then, the information is used to appropriately reduce the feature space. This process is continued until the target region is reduced to a suitable volume. Since this method requires neither real target image nor keywords in retrieving, it is quite simple and practical. Experimental results show the advantage and efficiency of the proposed system.

The main aim of this paper is to describe a method for locating a subimage of a stored image that approximately matches a given query image. This matching can support naive users in accessing an image database according to image contents rather symbolic attributes. The query image can be either composed using painting tools or cuts out of an actual scanned image. Our method is based on the extraction of features from the query image and from the stored images. The following three steps are involved: (1) an ISODATA algorithm is applied to segment (into region) both the query image and the stored images; (2) the normalized moment and geometrical features are computed from the segmented regions, and (3) a matching process is run on the resulting features to find those stored images which should be retrieved. The result is an ordered list of stored images or subimages from the database.

We test the performance of a texture feature constructed from the variance of the first eight AC Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients of JPEG compressed images. We break the image into sub-images, consisting of many 8*8 blocks, and then calculate the variance of each DCT coefficient across the sub-image. We evaluate the texture feature at two different image resolutions, and at three different quality factors. In our high resolution image a pixel covered a square of side 4 cm on the ground. Our low resolution image was generated by subsampling. Representative feature vectors were generated for five subjectively identified textures, by averaging a small training set. Each sub-image was then classified according to the representative feature vector closest in feature space. Compression ratio had little effect on the classification result in our study. However image resolution significantly altered the classification result. Classification correlated much more closely to a subjective classification for the low resolution image. Feature vectors also fell into much more clearly defined clusters at the lower resolution. Although more research is required across different photo-scales and sets of images, we conclude that texture features generated from compressed JPEG images have potential for content-based image retrieval based on texture.

Watermarking techniques, also referred to as digital signature, sign images by introducing changes that are imperceptible to the human eye but easily recoverable by a computer program. Generally, the signature is a number which identifies the owner of the image. The locations in the image where the signature is embedded are determined by a secret key. Doing so prevents possible pirates from easily removing the signature. Furthermore, it should be possible to retrieve the signature from an altered image. Possible alternations of signed images include blurring, compression and geometrical transformations such as rotation and translation. These alterations are referred to as attacks. A new method based on amplitude modulation is presented. Single signature bits are multiply embedded by modifying pixel values in the blue channel. These modifications are either additive or subtractive, depending on the value of the bit, and proportional to the luminance. This new method has shown to be resistant to both classical attacks, such as filtering, and geometrical attacks. Moreover, the signature can be extracted without the original image.

We have developed a Tv-on-demand system that provides playback of a television program after a period ranging from a few seconds to one week after broadcast, and have conducted usage trials in cooperation with a television station in Nagano Prefecture of Japan. This system has been achieved through the development of various technologies such as automatic updating of stored television programs and contents retrieval by telop characters. Users in the trials can begin playback of a television program immediately after its broadcast has begun. The purpose of the trials was to evaluate the system's usability in applications such as contents retrieval, selective viewing of commercials, and customer service at the television station. This paper presents applied technologies and some experimental results and also addresses a new direction of information retrieval system based on the evaluation of the usage trials.

The design of a distributed video-on-demand system that is suitable for large video libraries is described. The system is designed to store 1000s of hours of video material on tertiary storage devices. A video that a user wants to view is loaded onto a video file server close to the users desktop from where it can be played. The system manages the distributed cache of videos on the file servers and schedules load requests to the tertiary storage devices. The system also includes a metadata database, described in a companion paper, that the user can query to locate video material of interest. This paper describes the software architecture, storage organization, application protocols for locating and loading videos, and distributed cache management algorithm used by the system. © 1994 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. Efficient video sequence retrieval in large repositories

This paper presents algorithms to deal with problems associated with indexing high-dimensional feature vectors that characterize video data. Indexing high dimensional vectors is well known to be computationally expensive. Our solution is to optimally split the high dimensional vector into a few low dimensional feature vectors and querying the system for each feature vector. This involves solving an important sub-problem: developing a model of retrieval that enables us to query the system efficiently. Once we formulate the retrieval problem in terms of a retrieval model, we present an optimality criterion to maximize the number of results using this model. The criterion is based on a novel idea of using the underlying probability distribution of the feature vectors. A branch-and-prune strategy optimized per each query, is developed. This uses the set of features derived from the optimality criterion. Our results show that the algorithm performs well, giving a speedup of a factor of 25 with respect to a linear search while retaining the same level of Recall.

In this paper videos are analyzed to get a content-based decription of the video. The structure of a given video is useful to index long videos efficiently and automatically. A comparison between shots gives an overview about cut frequency, cut pattern, and scene bounds. After a shot detection the shots are grouped into clusters based on their visual similarity. A time-constraint clustering procedure is used to compare only those shots that are positioned inside a time range. Shots from different areas of the video (e.g., begin/end) are not compared. With this cluster information that contains a list about shots and their clusters it is possible to calculate scene bounds. A labeling of all clusters gives a declaration about the cut pattern. It is easy now to distinguish a dialogue from an action scene. The final content analysis is done by the imageMiner* system. The imageMiner system developed at the University of Bremen of the image Processing Department of the Center for Computing Technology realizes content-based image retrieval for still images through a novel combination of methods and techniques of computer vision and artifical intelligence. The imageMiner system consists of three analysis modules for computer vision, namely for color, texture, and contour analysis. Additionally exists a module for object recognition. The output of the object recognition module can be indexed by a text retrieval system. Thus, concepts like forestscene may;be searched for. We combine the still image analysis with the results of the video analysis in order to retrieve shots or scenes.
