This paper describes and reports an experience related to several applications of the Animate vision Paradigm to query processing and indexing in multimedia databases. In particular we show as two main problems related to video and image databases may be usefully advantaged by an Animate image Similarity model, namely the video segmentation problem and the image retrieval task in a Query By Example environment.

Emerging applications of mobile data management, such as content-based image retrieval in ad hoc networks, require the awareness of content distribution to enact and optimize the communication and search tasks. Caching is a widely used approach in mobile environments to improve system performance and keep track of replications. Within the scope of mobile and ubiquitous computing infrastructure, traditional caching techniques are not effective for large-size data such as images due to the limitations of bandwidth, storage, and power. The functionality of caching techniques relies on exact match, making them unsuitable for imprecise and similarity-based queries. In addition, the description of cached contents is defined based on the query context instead of data content, which fails to exploit the semantic locality of cached data and makes the traditional caching techniques inefficient in utilizing cache storage. In this paper, we present a semantic-aware caching scheme (SAIC) for image databases in ad hoc networks. The proposed scheme is designed based on several novel ideas: 1) multi-level partitioning of semantic space, 2) constraint-based representation of image semantics, 3) non-flooding query resolution, and 4) adaptive cache consistency maintenance. Our combination of theoretical analysis and simulation show the efficiency of the proposed scheme, and evaluate its performance in comparison against two ad hoc caching schemes as advanced in the literature. © 2006 IEEE.

A system for fast searching in video databases is proposed, exploiting the location data of tracking algorithms. A key advantage is the sampling of object behavior independent of the frame rate, resulting in a very efficient storage. With the advent of hard-disk video recording, video databases gradually emerge for consumer applications. The large capacity of disks requires the need for fast storage and retrieval functions. We propose a semantic analyzer for sports video, which is able to automatically extract and analyze key events, such as player behavior. The analyzer employs several visual cues and a model for real-world coordinates, so that speed and position of a player can be determined with sufficient accuracy. It consists of four processing steps: (1) playing event detection, (2) court and player segmentation, as well as a 3-D camera model, (3) player tracking, and (4) event-based high-level analysis exploiting visual cues extracted in the real-world. We show attractive experimental results remarking the system efficiency and classification skills.

The use of low-level visual features to retrieve relevant information from image and video databases has drawn much research attention in recent years. Color is perhaps the most dominant and distinguishing visual feature. In modern CBIR systems, statistical clustering methods are often used to extract visual features, index the feature space, and classify images into semantic categories. Statistical clustering methods are tools that search and generalize concepts based on a large amount of high dimensional numerical data. Feature space analysis is the procedure of recovering the centers of the high-density regions. The technique for representing the significant image features is based on the mean shift algorithm, a simple nonparametric procedure for estimating density gradients. This paper discusses color image segmentation, which is base to feature extraction for content-based image retrieval.

Pictures and video sequences showing human faces are of high importance in content-based retrieval systems. During flourishing Internet time, more and more human face image databases are stored on the Internet. They provide a great number of human face images to access. Therefore, considering the storage space and the network bandwidth, how to access human face image more efficiently has become an important topic. The primary goal of our method is to minimize the number of bits required to preserve the crucial facial features without any loss of information. In this paper, we propose a new technique based on JPEG2000 for the storage and retrieval of the human face images. We combine lossy and lossless image compression of JPEG2000 to reach our goal. Aiming at the feature of human face image data, we extract the facial features in the image as the most important information. The lossless image compression is used to retain the facial features of human face image. The background and the rest of the image are processed by lossy compression to further save the required storage space. The preliminary result has shown that our method can have higher compression ratio without loss of the crucial facial feature for low bandwidth communication applications, such as videophone and teleconferencing

image databases are now currently utilized in a wide range of different areas, in particular, the development and application of remote sensing platforms result in the production of huge amounts of image data. One of the major problem in the practical implementation of a Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) for remotely sensed images is that the content-based indexing and searching process always requires extremely high computational power. On the other hand, the content-based image retrieval algorithms are very suitable for parallel computation as the algorithms can be broken into several data independent processes for running on a parallel computer. In this paper, we discuss the porting problem of a sequential application of remote sensed image retrieval in a parallel environment using the new paradigm of programming introduced by the birth of a new structured program languages (Assist 1.2) and compared performances to sequential and to commercial multiprocessors solutions.

A good virtual learning environment should deliver relevant learning materials to learners at the most appropriate time and locations to facilitate learners' acquisition of knowledge and skills. In this paper, we propose ontology-based information integration in virtual learning environment using ontology and web services. Relevant concepts extracted from domain ontology provide ontology-based browsing space that allows users to browse and select relevant terms of interest and increases the degree of relevancy. By using web services to integrate learning materials from heterogeneous public domain data sources, applications do not need to know the internal structure and working of public domain data sources, and reuse existing applications and recourses. We use Gene Ontology, PubMed eUtils and Google Web APIs to demonstrate our idea. The implementation involves techniques in image and video processing, database management, programming, and multimedia learning materials presentation.

With the popularity of multimedia applications, the huge amount of image and video related to real life have led to the proliferation of emerging storage techniques. Contented-based image retrieval and classification have become attractive issues in the last few years. Most researches concerning image classification focus primarily on low-level image features (e.g. color, texture, shape, etc.) and ignore the conceptual associations among the objects in the images. In this paper, we propose a new image classification method by using multiple-level association rules based on the image objects. The approach we proposed can be decomposed of three phases: (1) building of conceptual object hierarchy, (2) discovery of classification rules, and (3) classification and prediction of images. At the first phase, we use a hierarchical clustering method to build the conceptual hierarchy based on the low-level features of image objects. At the second phase, we devise a multi-level mining algorithm for finding the image classification rules. The classification task is performed at the last phase. Empirical evaluations show that our approach performs better than other approaches in terms of classification accuracy.
