This paper addresses the problem of recovering the semantic structure of broadcast news. A hierarchy of retrievable units is automatically constructed by integrating information from different media. The hierarchy provides a compact yet meaningful abstraction of the broadcast news data similar to a conventional table of content that can serve as an effective index table, facilitating the capability of browsing through large amounts of data in a non-linear fashion. The recovery of the semantic structure of the data further enables the automated solutions in constructing visual representations that are relevant to the semantics as well as in establishing useful relationships among data units such as topic categorization and content based multimedia hyperlinking. Preliminary experiments of integrating different media for hierarchical segmentation of semantics have yielded encouraging results. Some of the results are presented and discussed in this paper.

A key aspect of imageretrieval using color, is the creation of robust and efficient indices. In particular, the color histogram remains the most popular index, due primarily to its simplicity. However, the color histogram has a number of drawbacks. Specifically histograms capture only global activity, they require quantisation to reduce dimensionality, are highly dependent on the chosen color space, have no means to exclude a certain color from a query and can provide erroneous results due to gamma nonlinearity. In this paper we present a vector angular distance measure which is implemented as part of our database system. Our system does away with histogram techniques for color indexing and retrieval and instead implements color vector techniques. We use color segmentation to extract regions of prominent color and use representative vectors from these extracted regions in the image indices. This way we end up with a much smaller index which does not have the granularity of a histogram. Instead similarity is based on our vector angular distance measure between a query color vector and the indexed representative vectors.

Detecting unauthorized copies of digital media (images, audio and video) is a basic requirement for Intellectual Property Right (IPR) protection. This paper proposes a novel method to detect copies of digital images. This copy detection scheme can be used as either an alternative approach or a complementary approach to watermarking. A test image is first reduced to 8x8 sub-image by intensity averaging, and then, the AC coefficients of its discrete cosine transform (DCT) are used to compute distance from those generated from the query image, of which a user wants to find copies. A challenge arises when copies are processed to avoid copy detection or enhance image quality. We show the ordinal measure of DCT coefficients, which is based on relative ordering of AC magnitude values and using distance metrics between two rank permutations, are robust to various modifications of the original image. The optimal threshold selection scheme using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion is also addressed. Through simulations on the database of 40,000 images we show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Multimedia database can be define as a collection of storage and retrieval systems, in which large amount of media objects are created, modified, searched and retrieved, where as Multimedia is the combination of text, image, graphics, animations, audio and video. The extension of database application to handle multimedia objects requires synchronization of multiple media data streams. Multimedia data mining refers to the extraction of implicit knowledge, data relationships, or other patterns which are not stored in multimedia files explicitly. The system's overall performance in retrieval can be increase by indexing and classification of multimedia data with efficient information fusion of the different modalities is mandatory. Apart from text retrieval, the current waves in web searching and multimedia data retrieval are the search for and delivery of 3D scenes, images, music and video. The content-based multimedia information retrieval provides new techniques and methods for searching various multimedia databases over the world.

Contemporary approaches to semantic indexing for bag of words imageretrieval do not adapt well when the image or video collections dynamically get modified. In this paper, We propose an on-line incremental semantic indexing scheme for imageretrieval in dynamic image collections. Our main contributions are in the form of a method and a datastructure that tackle representation of the term document matrix and on-line semantic indexing where the database changes. We, introduce a bipartite graph model (BGM) which is a scalable datastructure. that aids in online semantic indexing. It con also be incrementally updated. BGM uses tf-idf values for building a semantic bipartite graph. lilt? also introduce a cash flow Algorithm that works on the BGM to retrieve semantically relevant images from the database. We examine the properties of both BGM and Cash Flow algorithm through a series of experiments. Finally, we demonstrate how they can he effectively implemented to build large scale imageretrieval systems in an incremental manner.

As a first step to creating a video database, a video sequence has to be segmented into several subsequences based on significant changes in the scene. This enables the media user to identify the whole or a part of the sequence and to retrieve scenes of interest from a large video database. Researchers in the past have used a histogram based inter-frame difference approach to identify significant scene changes. To determine which is the best color coordinate system for video indexing, we have evaluated the histogram based indexing method using different color coordinate systems - RGB, HSv, YIQ, L*a*b*, L*u*v* & Munsell - and compared the results for accuracy of indexing with reference to subjective indexing. Since it is difficult to determine the exact threshold value to obtain reasonably good results, we also propose a vide segmenting method called hierarchical histogram based indexing that segments a video sequence into several levels of subsequences using different levels of threshold.

We have developed a wide-area-distributed storage system for multimedia databases that minimizes the possibility of simultaneous failure of multiple disks in the event of a major disaster. It features a RAID system whose member disks are spatially distributed over a wide area Each node has a device that includes the controller of the RAID and the controller of the member disks controlled by other nodes. The devices in the node are connected to a computer using fiber optic cables and communicate using Fibre-Channel technology. Any computer at a node can utilize multiple devices connected by optical fibers as a single "virtual disk". The advantage of this system structure is that devices and fiber optic cables are shared by the computers. In this report, we first describe our proposed system and a prototype we used for testing, Then we discuss its performance, i.e., how the read and write throughputs are affected by data-access delay, the RAID level, and queuing.
