This paper describes an ultrasound image compression algorithm, related to mosaic image compression, where each compressed object is represented as a set of indexes to the database of mosaic elements. The proposed approach is considered as an alternative method for ultrasound biomedical image compression. A memory efficient implementation based upon the Tree Tessellation Algorithm v.10 (TTA10) indexing/retrieval solution for managing mosaic elements. The principal advantage of the current approach is that for the very specific kind of ultrasound images (cardiology) it classifies a particular type of the image (compression stage) first, and uses a specially constructed schema to decompose an object into parts in second. Each part of the image is identified as the most similar mosaic image in the database using TTA10, and finally the only index is stored in compressed structure of an image. Since the size of ultrasound images storage is similar to the video one, meanwhile the specific biomedical content is highly correlated;the usage of the mosaic image compression is an affective solution for storage. classification, the specific segmentation solutions.

The use of low-level visual features to retrieve relevant information from image and video databases has drawn much research attention in recent years. Color is perhaps the most dominant and distinguishing visual feature. In modern CBIR systems, statistical clustering methods are often used to extract visual features, index the feature space, and classify images into semantic categories. Statistical clustering methods are tools that search and generalize concepts based on a large amount of high dimensional numerical data. Feature space analysis is the procedure of recovering the centers of the high-density regions. The technique for representing the significant image features is based on the mean shift algorithm, a simple nonparametric procedure for estimating density gradients. This paper discusses color image segmentation, which is base to feature extraction for content-based image retrieval.

Many database management systems support whole-image matching. However, users may only remember certain subregions of the images. In this paper, we develop Padding and Reduction Algorithms to support subimage queries of arbitrary size based on local color information. The idea is to estimate the best-case lower bound to the dissimilarity measure between the query and the image. By making use of multiresolution representation, this lower bound becomes tighter as the scale becomes finer. Because image contents are usually pre-extracted and stored, a key issue is how to determine the number of levels used in the representation. We address this issue analytically by estimating the CPU and I/O costs, and experimentally by comparing the performance and accuracy of the outcomes of various filtering schemes. Our findings suggest that a 3-level hierarchy is preferred. We also study three strategies for searching multiple resolutions. Our studies indicate that the hybrid strategy with horizontal filtering on the coarse level and vertical filtering on remaining is the best choice when using Padding and Reduction Algorithms in the preferred 3-level multiresolution representation. The best 10 desired images can be retrieved efficiency and effectively from a collection of a thousand images in about 3.5 seconds.

This paper presents algorithms to deal with problems associated with indexing high-dimensional feature vectors that characterize video data. Indexing high dimensional vectors is well known to be computationally expensive. Our solution is to optimally split the high dimensional vector into a few low dimensional feature vectors and querying the system for each feature vector. This involves solving an important sub-problem: developing a model of retrieval that enables us to query the system efficiently. Once we formulate the retrieval problem in terms of a retrieval model, we present an optimality criterion to maximize the number of results using this model. The criterion is based on a novel idea of using the underlying probability distribution of the feature vectors. A branch-and-prune strategy optimized per each query, is developed. This uses the set of features derived from the optimality criterion. Our results show that the algorithm performs well, giving a speedup of a factor of 25 with respect to a linear search while retaining the same level of Recall.

Compression-based total photograph retrieval (CBIR) is a method that is used to retrieve pictures from big datasets correctly. Unlike traditional photo retrieval methods, CBIR utilizes lossless or loss compression algorithms to lessen the scale of the image statistics for transmission over a network connection. That is particularly useful in programs wherein transmitting cumbersome image statistics is only sometimes viable. With the aid of compressing the facts related to a photo and sending only the compressed version, transmission instances are significantly decreased, even though nonetheless maintaining the visual first-rate and integrity of the photo. This makes CBIR a possible choice for packages consisting of streaming video, medical imaging, far-flung sensing, and massive-scale surveillance systems. CBIR also has packages in multimedia databases and different networked structures that require efficient image retrieval and viewing. © 2024 IEEE.

Unsupervised hashing is important for indexing huge image or video collections without having expensive annotations available. Hashing aims to learn short binary codes for compact storage and efficient semantic retrieval. We propose an unsupervised deep hashing layer called Bi-half Net that maximizes entropy of the binary codes. Entropy is maximal when both possible values of the bit are uniformly (half-half) distributed. To maximize bit entropy, we do not add a term to the loss function as this is difficult to optimize and tune. Instead, we design a new parameter-free network layer to explicitly force continuous image features to approximate the optimal half-half bit distribution. This layer is shown to minimize a penalized term of the Wasserstein distance between the learned continuous image features and the optimal half-half bit distribution. Experimental results on the image datasets Flickr25k, Nus-wide, Cifar-10, Mscoco, Mnist and the video datasets Ucf-101 and Hmdb-51 show that our approach leads to compact codes and compares favorably to the current state-of-the-art.

Recent research on image databases has been aimed at the development of content-based retrieval techniques for the management of visual information. Compared with such visual information as color, texture, and spatial constraints, shape is so important a feature associated with those image objects of interest that shape alone may be sufficient to identify and classify an object completely and accurately. This paper presents a novel method based on feature point histogram indexing for object shape representation in image databases. In this scheme, the feature point histogram is obtained by discretizing the angles produced by the Delaunay triangulation of a set of unique feature points which characterize object shape in the context, and then counting the number of times each discrete angle occurs in the resulted triangulation. The proposed shape representation technique is translation, scale, and rotation independent. Our various experiments concluded that the Euclidean distance performs very well as the similarity measure function in combination with the feature point histogram computed by counting the two largest angles of each individual Delaunay triangle. Through the further experiment, we also found evidence that an image object representation using a feature point histogram provides an effective cue for image object discrimination.

While current approaches for video segmentation and indexing are mostly focused on visual information, audio signals may actually play a primary role in video content parsing. In this paper, we present an approach for automatic segmentation, indexing, and retrieval of audiovisual data based on audio content analysis. The accompanying audio signal of audiovisual data is first segmented and classified into basic types, i.e. speech, music, environmental sound, and silence. This coarse-level segmentation and indexing step is based on morphological and statistical analysis of several short-term features of the audio signals. Then, environmental sounds are classified into finer classes such as applause, explosion, bird's sound, etc. This fine-level classification and indexing step is based on time-frequency analysis of audio signals and the use of hidden Markov model (HMM) as the classifier. On top of this archiving scheme, an audiovisual data retrieval system is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed approach has an accuracy rate higher than 90% for the coarse-level classification, and higher than 85% for the fine-level classification. Examples of audiovisual data segmentation and retrieval are also provided.

In today’s multimedia age, Content Based video retrieval (CBvR) is a trending area and lot of research is being carried out in video Surveillance, Big Data analysis and multimedia applications. Usage of multimedia data is becoming very common in day today life, content based video retrieval provides an effective mechanism for maintaining, managing and retrieving large number of videos efficiently as per user’s interest. The advancement in the technology is evolving and multimedia applications are gaining more importance so the performance of the CBvR system need to be high and accurate to fulfill user demands. The proposed paper focuses on surveying the different techniques for feature extraction and similarity computation for retrieving relevant videos. Feature extraction can be done using different techniques such as shot boundary detection, based on histogram, PCA Shift, Gist and SURF (Speeded up Robust Features) and Quadratic Equation are used for feature extraction and similarity computation. In CBvR technique the videos are retrieved from the large databases based on the given Input Query as an image, on processing this query the features from videos and the query image are extracted mainly the color, texture and shape. Once these features are extracted then a similarity between query and the videos is computed, ranking will be done based on the similarity score. The results interpret that SURF technique provides better results as compared to other techniques and the system has a retrieval performance of more than 70%. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

For the last few years, shot boundary detection has been recognized as an important research issue on video retrieval. Also as a preliminary step for the task, it is essential to extract salient features from videos. Recently, it has become common to perform the two tasks in compressed domain to alleviate their computational costs. In this paper, we propose novel shot boundary detection technique, which uses two feature images, or DC and edge images, extracted directly from MPEG compressed video. While a DC image can be easily obtained, edge image extraction usually requires considerable computational burden. For fast edge image extraction, we suggest to utilize only a few AC coefficients of each DCT block in motion compensated P-frames and B-frames as well as I-frames. This drastically reduces the computational burden compared to edge extraction in the spatial domain. In order to further reduce the computational burden, another edge image extraction technique is also suggested on the basis of AC prediction using DC images. By using the edge energy diagram obtained from edge images and histograms from DC images, shot boundaries such as abrupt transitions, fades, and dissolves are detected automatically. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques are fast and effective.
