image search has been actively studied in recent years. On the other hands, image browsing has received little attention. image browsing refers to the process of presenting some forms of overview or summary of the image relationships, thus facilitating a user to navigate across the data set and find images of interests. In this paper, we present a new data structure built on the multi-linearization of image attributes for efficient organization of the data set and fast visual browsing of the images. We describe new techniques for multi-linearization based on multiple space-filling curves and hierarchical clustering techniques. In addition to providing fast navigation, our proposed data structure allows computationally efficient insertion and deletion of images from the data set. We then present a novel image navigator and browser built on dual-linearization data structure and intuitive presentation of image relevance and relationships, demonstrate the image navigation process, and report results on 1000 and 22,000 image databases. We also discuss how our data structure can be extended to support fast image search.

The impetus behind Semantic Web research remains the vision of supplementing availability with utility;that is, the World Wide Web provides availability of digital media, but the Semantic Web will allow presently available digital media to be used in unseen ways. An example of such an application is multimedia retrieval. At present, there are vast amounts of digital media available on the web. Once this media gets associated with machine-understandable metadata, the web can serve as a potentially unlimited supplier for multimedia web services, which could populate themselves by searching for keywords and subsequently retrieving images or articles, which is precisely the type of system that is proposed in this paper. Such a system requires solid interoperability, a central ontology, semantic agent search capabilities, and standards. Specifically, this paper explores this cross-section of image annotation and Semantic Web services, models the web service components that constitute such a system, discusses the sequential, cooperative execution of these Semantic Web services, and introduces intelligent storage of image semantics as part of a semantic link space. This paper proposes a real time storage and simultaneous retrieval tool that can be used to access a video database to capture and index all the images which the video camera records. Using this tool we can register video streams on the spot. Surveillance and patrol of the electric power industry can in this way be aided effectively. Our tool has two main features: (1) automatic segmentation of video streams containing irregular transitions, and (2) rapid indexing of segmented video scenes using local color patterns. Our prototype tool can segment, index and retrieve video streams at 5 frames/s.

Illumination invariance is of paramount importance to annotate video sequences stored in large videodatabases consistently. Yet, popular texture analysis methods such as multichannel filtering techniques do not yield illumination-invariant texture representations. In this paper, we assess the effectiveness of three illumination normalisation schemes for texture representations derived from Gabor filter outputs. The schemes aim at overcoming intensity scaling effects due to changes in ilumination conditions. A theoretical analysis and experimental results enable us to select one scheme as the most promising one. In this scheme, a normalising factor is derived at each pixel by combining the energy responses of different filters at that pixel. The scheme overcomes illumination variations well, while still preserving discriminatory textural information. Further statistical analysis may shed light on other interesting properties or limitations of the scheme.

In this paper, we propose a new image feature extraction method for MPEG compressed video. To minimize the MPEG decoding process, we use only DC values for Y, Cr, and Cb components for each macroblock. Then, we can obtain a feature vector using the decoded DC values of Y, Cr, and Cb components for all macroblocks in an I frame. The feature vector consists of histograms for various colors, luminance, and edge types. In obtaining histograms for colors and luminance features, we consider the ratio of contributing pure colors and luminance to the chroma DC values for each macroblock. Then, we update all contributing colors and/or luminance histograms accordingly. Otherwise, if the macro block is classified as an edge block, then we update the corresponding edge type histogram. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed feature extraction method, we apply it to a scene change detection problem.

The future of healthcare delivery systems and telemedical applications will undergo a radical change due to the developments in wearable technologies, medical sensors, mobile computing and communication techniques. When dealing with applications of collecting, sorting and transferring medical data from distant locations for performing remote medical collaborations and diagnosis. E-health was born with the integration of networks and telecommunications. In recent years healthcare systems rely on images acquired in two dimensional domains in the case of still images, or three dimensional domains for volumetric video sequences and images. images are acquired with many modalities including X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, positron emission tomography, computed axial tomography. Medical informationis either in multidimensional or multi-resolution form, this creates enormous amount of data. retrieval, Efficient storage, management and transmission of this voluminous data are highly complex. One of the solutions to reduce this complex problem is to compress the medical data without any loss (i.e. lossless). Since the diagnostics capabilities are not compromised. This technique combines integer transforms and predictive coding to enhance the performance of lossless compression. The proposed techniques can be evaluated for performance using compression quality measures.

The visual Information Systems International conference series is designed to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from diverse areas of computing including computer vision, databases, human–computer interaction, information security, image processing, information visualization and mining, as well as knowledge and information management to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, present their latest results and to advance research and development in the construction and application of visual information systems. Following previous conferences held in Melbourne (1996), San Diego (1997), Amsterdam (1999), Lyon (2000), Taiwan (2002), Miami (2003), San Francisco (2004) and Amsterdam (2005), the Ninth International conference on visual Information Systems, vISUAL2007, was held in Shanghai, China, June 28–29, 2007. Over the years, the visual information systems paradigm continues to evolve, and the unrelenting exponential growth in the amount of digital visual data underlines the escalating importance of how such data are effectively managed and deployed. vISUAL2007 received 117 submissions from 15 countries and regions. Submitted full papers were reviewed by more than 60 international experts in the field. This volume collects 54 selected papers presented at vISUAL2007. Topics covered in these papers include image and video retrieval, visual biometrics, intelligent visual information processing, visual data mining, ubiquitous and mobile visual information systems, visual semantics, 2D/3D graphical visual data retrieval and applications of visual information systems.

In this paper we present the design and initial implementation of a multimedia system for historical documents. The system, currently under development at FORTH, will be used bv the vikelea Municipal Library of archives at Ileraklion, Crete. The material consist s of historical documents that need to be digitized, indexed and continuously annotated by scholars so that the value of the archive will increase by its use. We present the design architecture and initial implementation of a client- server model for the creation, maintenance and use of such a digital archive. Also, we present a technique for marking-up different media to provide rapid entering of semantic information The user can interactively markup parts of the representation 011 the medium of choice (e.g. areas 011 a document image) and associate local information with text, images, sound-clips, video or subparts of them without altering the original. The output is XML files that can be parsed by viewers to navigate through the semantic information or used by search agents to refine the accuracy of retrieval in a query. For demonstration purposes we present LmageTagger, a prototype for document image tagging. Developing in .Java allows for net-centric administration and use of a number of heterogenous databases through standard Internet browsers.

Recently, learning to hash has been widely studied for image retrieval thanks to the computation and storage efficiency of binary codes. For most existing learning to hash methods, sufficient training images are required and used to learn precise hashing codes. However, in some real-world applications, there are not always sufficient training images in the domain of interest. In addition, some existing supervised approaches need a amount of labeled data, which is an expensive process in terms of time, labor and human expertise. To handle such problems, inspired by transfer learning, we propose a simple yet effective unsupervised hashing method named Optimal Projection Guided Transfer Hashing (GTH) where we borrow the images of other different but related domain i.e., source domain to help learn precise hashing codes for the domain of interest i.e., target domain. Besides, we propose to seek for the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) solution of the hashing functions of target and source domains due to the domain gap. Furthermore, an alternating optimization method is adopted to obtain the two projections of target and source domains such that the domain hashing disparity is reduced gradually. Extensive experiments on various benchmark databases verify that our method outperforms many state-of-the-art learning to hash methods. We present a framework for content based query and retrieval of information from large video databases. This framework enables content based retrieval of video sequences by characterizing the sequences using motion, texture and colorimetry cues. This characterization is biologically inspired and results in a compact parameter space where every segment of video is represented by an 8 dimensional vector. Searching and retrieval is done in real-time with high accuracy in this parameter space. The present version of the videoBook has 165 video sequences, each 15 seconds long at 30 frames a second representing storage of 65 Giga bytes. The videoBook is able to search and retrieve video sequences with 92% accuracy in real-time. Experiments thus demonstrate that the characterization is capable of extracting higher level structure from raw pixel values.
