Composed of a large variety of technologies and applications with unprecedented complexity, the smart grid, as a cyber-physical energy system, needs careful investigation of the interactions between the various domains involved, especially the coupling between the power and information systems. In this paper, two modern ways of modeling and simulating complex cyber-physical energy systems are considered: Co-simulation and Power-hardware-in-the-loop experiments. An analysis of these two approaches shows that a complementary and joint setup with realistic behaviors of hardware equipment under a variety of complex environments, co-simulated by several simulators from different domains, create a complete and high performance environment to achieve a holistic approach for smart grid validation and roll out. In the scope of coupling these two techniques, major technical challenges are identified and advanced solutions are outlined.

An innovative concept for in-house laboratory research, test and evaluation is being developed within the Avionics Directorate of Wright Laboratory. This concept involves placing advanced avionics hardware and software technologies into realistic testing environments analogous to placing test structures in a wind tunnel environment; hence, the title Avionics Wind Tunnel. These environments are generated, controlled and coordinated through pilot-in-the-loop interactions with a high level engagement model called SUPPRESSOR. SUPPRESSOR simulates a combat environment complete with reactive threats and friendly forces providing communications, jamming, radar, and counter-measures events. The event data and platform movements are used by distributed simulators placed around a real-time simulation network which produces a realistic environment to evaluate avionics technologies. The goal of this concept is to provide an inter-lab capability to perform research, test and evaluation on advanced integrated avionics technologies related to data fusion, integrated communication, navigation, identification (CNI), integrated electronic combat (EC), secure communications, and integrated avionics architectures. Engineers in the Avionics Directorate have been developing real-time interfaces to support joint CNI/EC demonstrations and experiments using the Integrated Test Bed (ITB), Integrated Electromagnetic System Simulator (IESS), Communications System Evaluation Laboratory (CSEL) and Integrated Defensive Avionics Laboratory (IDAL). This paper defines the Avionics Wind Tunnel concept, examines its benefits, and describes the current capabilities and future potential of this development.< >

The deterioration of inertial and primary frequency response of islanded microgrids has been a crucial issue for the proper operation of such microgrids. Several approaches, including inertia emulation strategies, have been proposed to improve the primary frequency response. However, the demonstrations of most inertia emulation research works are based on simulation-only testing which hinder their applicability in the field. In this paper, a novel model-free control (MFC) strategy for frequency response support in a diesel-wind microgrid system is presented, and it is tested for evaluation using a power-hardware-in-the-Ioop (PHIL) platform. The PHIL testing is one step closer to field testing since it allows real-time verification and accounts for the nonlinear grid dynamics, noise, and time delays that are usually ignored in simulation-only environments. The proposed MFC strategy is fully distributed, has low computational requirements, and can be easily implemented in resource constrained devices such as smart inverters. A PHIL microgrid platform consisting of two type-3 wind turbine generators and one diesel generator is used to test the proposed MFC strategy.

Fiscal realities and a reprioritization of United States (US) military spending have demanded that all systems and capabilities be fully exploited through an effective and efficient development, testing, training and operations continuum. To the US submarine community, this has meant that the traditional isolationist culture had to change, new and novel data communications technologies were required and all available resources and technologies had to be fully exploited for development, testing, training, and operation. Until recently, however, submarine communications systems and architectures were ill equipped to handle data and communications links required to support most resource sharing. With the recent advances in submarine communications systems, the time is at hand to implement this critical element of the new US military paradigm. The Naval Undersea Warfare Center's synthetic Environment Tactical Integration (SETI) Virtual Torpedo Project (VTP) utilizes new and innovative communications capabilities to provide a resource sharing capability to the submarine offering a high fiscal and capability payoff. VTP provides operational submarines with real-time access to high fidelity torpedo simulations of the US Navy's undersea Weapons Analysis Facility (WAF). The WAF is hardware-In-The-loop (HITL) facility offering extremely high fidelity torpedo engagement capability with full interactivity with the firing platform. Novel submarine communications capabilities are incorporated into VTP to allow for bi-directional data flow with up to two submarines at depth and speed. Additionally, hardware independent software (Java language) and a related downloadable client architecture are being developed to provide interoperability and reuse across the US Department of Defense (DoD) test and training infrastructure. Recent tests and demonstrations such as synthetic Theater of War-Europe (STOW-E) have implemented the capability to intermingle real and virtual worlds. However,

Virtual system development gets more and more important in many industrial domains. It is considered to reduce development times, lower computing costs, and shorten time-to-market. Co-simulation is a particularly promising approach for modular and interoperable development. In practice the integration and coupling of heterogeneous systems still require enormous efforts. The configuration and operation of distributed hardware-in-the-loop systems and simulations contribute to efficiency of testing. Currently no standardized interface or protocol specification is available, which allows the interaction of real-time and non-real-time systems of different vendors. This paper for the first time presents the Distributed Co-simulation Proto-col (DCP) which is subject to proposal as a standard for real-time and non-real-time system integration and simulation. The DCP consists of a data model, a finite state machine, and a communication protocol including a set of protocol data units. It is designed as a tool independent standard. It was developed in context of the ACOSAR project and is subject to standardization as a Modelica Association Project (MAP). It enables the definition, configuration and execution of a wide range of different simulations and test scenarios. It supports a master-slave architecture for simulation setup and control. The specification defines the design of a slave only, the design of a master is not in scope of the *** highlight the industrial applicability of the DCP, three examples from the automotive domain are shown. © 2018 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

The GEBCO-NF Alumni Team is an international team working on solution towards autonomous Ocean Mapping operations. The Team was initiated and led by alumni of the Nippon Foundation / GEBCO training program at the University of New Hampshire. The alumni worked closely with international partners and suppliers to develop and advance their concept created for the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE. The Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competition aimed to push the boundaries of ocean technologies by creating solutions to the grand challenge of mapping our oceans. The Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE challenge was to develop a complete system that could map 100 km(2) in 16 hours at 5 m horizontal resolution grid and produce images the elicited excitement in the general public. The designated survey area for the XPRIZE challenge could be up to 50 nautical miles offshore and operations had to be remotely coordinated from a land-based operation center. The entire mapping system had to fit into a standard 40-foot shipping container. The aim of the GEBCO-NF Alumni Team was to leverage existing technology, wherever possible, and to integrate them to achieve the competition requirements. Their strategic approach was to develop strong partnerships with technology and services providers to augment the hardware, integration and software needs of the Team. The GEBCO-NF Alumni Team conceived a two-system, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and Remote-controlled or Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV), concept to autonomously map the seafloor in a wide variety of ocean environments. The AUV-USV idea will lead to more efficient, safer and cost-effective seafloor mapping operations. Autonomous seafloor surveys, with remote AUV launch and recovery (human-in-the-loop) and with the USV autonomously tracking the AUV for a complete survey mission while being monitored from a remote shore station, were demonstrated to be a viable option for future offshore survey and inspection projects. Despite rigorous and exhaustive testing in a ship representative test site prior to going underway for sea trials, programmable logic controller (PLC) based control systems frequently have undiscovered software bugs—such as incorrect input/output (IO) signal usage, mismatched signal names, erroneous setpoint values, and incorrect logic. These bugs require the vessel to return to port for software corrections and updates before additional testing can commence. The expense and inflexibility of a full ship hardware representative set of material, coupled with the time and monetary cost associated with the sea trial interruptions, is an obstacle to agile software deployment. Motivated by increasing efficiency and decreasing costs, in this paper, we present a novel architecture to verify and validate (V&V) PLC control systems before they are deployed and tested on a vessel. Our agile framework loads a real-world Siemens 1500 Series PLC project file into a virtual simulation environment that runs custom test scenarios and evaluates the control system. The environment consists of virtualized Siemens 1500 Series PLCs—using Siemens PLCSIM Advanced—and loaded plant models to achieve software-in-the-loop (SIL) simulation testing. A python based software suite orchestrates the simulation by interacting with and facilitating the data flow between the virtualized PLCs and plant models, logging data, running the scenario scripts, and generating test reports. These reports detail the controller performance throughout the various scenarios and identify the parts that failed. Utilizing the test reports, control software bugs and incorrect logic is detected and resolved before platform testing. The all-virtual architecture eliminates the need to have a full ship hardware representative set of material. Drilling operations for geothermal and hydrocarbon energy involves technology that controls a highly dynamic and complex process. A transition from assisted control to a higher level of automation not only requires a step-change in technology but also in infrastructure for development and validation of these technologies. The lack of realistic and scalable test environments for automated drilling systems delays qualification of new technology and limits the potential for the industry to reduce costs and minimize the carbon footprint. Since 2016, a high-fidelity drilling simulator has been established and tested for development and validation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for drilling operations. The simulator can be accessed through a web Application Programming Interface (API) and run from a web client or as a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator from a control system environment with programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The web enablement makes the simulator suitable for testing AI systems from anywhere in the world without any installation of software. The HIL functionality enables a workflow from early development stages to industrial pilots involving testing in a realistic environment. This paper describes the objectives of the project, the technical solutions, and the results obtained.

The Operational Test Command's BCNIS program will provide realistic situational awareness (SA) and command and control (C2) tactical environment to support operational testing, without the costs and constraints of deploying a large number of physical units in the field. In order to fulfill the requirements for large scale testing of emerging communication technology with the constraint of limited availability of physical radio units, BCNIS is looking to leverage the concept of Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) test environments. This central idea of LVC involves connecting units that exist in a constructive simulation model with live and virtual lab based units to form a “hybrid” large scale network, which now can be employed for the large scale operational tests of the communication technology. Along with `at operational scale' testing, LVC also allows configuration of `hard to setup and test' scenarios such as urban combat scenarios: the constructive domain can be employed to simulate the urban areas and complex network layout in which the constructive units operate, while the live domain setup can be compatible with the constraints of the physical environment of the test range. This paper describes the use hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) capability to support the use of emulated JTRS radio models in a larger scale Operational Test of GMR radios. In addition to representing some portions of the Network Under Test (NUT), the LVC representations will also be used to represent a variety of battle command system simulations and network loading tools to create the appropriate voice, video (or imagery), and tactical message loads on networks.
