This article deals with some topics related to image indexing and retrieval in the field of cultural heritage. Structured vocabularies play a important role in the improving access to cultural heritage information, so this article reviews the methods and findings in establishment and development of thesauri for visual collections and emphasises problems and possibilities for use of thesauri in networked environment.

An improved edge-adaptive color interpolation method for Bayer pattern images of single-sensor digital cameras is proposed in this paper. We derive a more accurate color edge classifier by using both ultra-channel and inter-channel correlation. In order to reduce the aliasing artifacts, missing channel values are interpolated along the edge direction. Experiment results show that the proposed method can preserve the edge information better, reduce color-bleeding artifacts and achieve higher image quality and signal fidelity against the existing schemes.

Because of the wide spread of digital imaging devices and the World Wide Web, we can easily obtain digital images of various kinds of real world scenes. Currently, however, classification/recognition of generic real world images is far from practical due to a diversity of real world scenes. To deal with such diversity, we have proposed gathering real world images from the World-Wide Web and using them as training images for image classification. We call this research project "Web image mining". Web images are as diverse as real world scene, since Web images are taken by a large number of people for various kinds of purpose. It is expected that diverse training images enable us to classify/recognition diverse real world images. The identification of features suitable in content based image retrieval is of interest for many researchers. It is well known that the shape is one of the most used features in this field. In this paper a syntactic approach (edge representation based on 4+1 symbols) is used to validate same edge detector. A joint-ownership verification approach [Huiping Guo, et al., (2002)] verified all the coowners with a secret sharing algorithm given that an authority is always available. The joint-ownership scheme was also extended to confirm partial ownership with additional watermarks embedded. This paper pointed out this extension reduces the scheme security and image quality. Additionally, the present paper proposes a new dynamic ownership scheme, which confirms individual owner's right independently. Furthermore, it enables ownership expiry, renewal and inheritance without rewatermarking the image after the image has been watermarked.

In many visual problems, line variables, associated to the discontinuities present in the ideal image, are used to obtain better results. In this paper we propose to extend the use of line variables to the high-resolution reconstruction problem. Moreover, we impose that parallel discontinuities should not be close. To minimize the energy function related to this problem we use a CATILED (convex approximation technique for interacting line elements deblurring) algorithm. In this paper, we propose methods to adapt colors on the visual content for people with color vision deficiency. The proposed adaptation consists of two parts: adaptations for dichromat and anomalous trichromat. The adaptation for dichromats aims to give them better color information, while the adaptation for anomalous trichromats aims to give them original color. To verify the proposed methods, we used both quantitative and qualitative measurements. Experimental results showed that the proposed adaptation enhanced color information readability of the people with color vision deficiency.

The visual perception of model-based coding is usually not good enough. We develop a facial expression cloning system which can make a 3-D facial model lifelike, and transfer a person's subtle facial change to another's by using the expression ratio image (ERI). An expressive 3-D facial model will be shown. On the other hand, we intend to achieve an intelligent system which can make a 3-D facial model lifelike and doesn't need to transmit any more information, i.e., we intend to model the MPEG-4 facial animation parameters (FAP) to ratio image conversion. In order that each FAP follows a unique ratio image, the FAP and the expression ratio image have to be considered as jointly distributed. Thus, an automated system which achieves the desired lifelike 3-D facial model is developed.

Recent successes in wavelet image coding are mainly attributed to the exploitation of within and cross subband redundancies with optimized rate-distortion analysis. There have been several very competitive wavelet coders developed, such as Said and Pearlman's SPIHT, Xiong et al.'s SFQ and the JPEG2000 standard etc. A novel wavelet image coding algorithm, namely partitioning morphological wavelet image coding (PMWC) is proposed in this paper, which extends MRWD by logically partitioning the information in the morphological dilated cluster and exploiting the within and cross subband dependencies in the significant coefficient areas. Extensive experiments have shown that the proposed PMWC outperforms SPIHT and MRWD, and is very competitive with the state-of-the-art codecs such as SFQ and JPEG2000. Because of its inherit joint compression and noise reduction properties, the reconstructed images often show somewhat superior perceptual visual quality.

Two new methods for scrambling digital images are introduced. The first is based on the 3-dimensional Arnold transformation and the second method is based on the generalized Gray code transformation. Not only the algorithms for scrambling a digital image are given, but also the periodicity of the 3-D Arnold transformation and the generalized Gray code transformation are discussed. A few theorems that calculate the periods of the two transformations are given. Examples of image scrambling are also given.
