With the increasing use of audio-visual databases, the need for automatic content-based classification has grown in importance. In this paper, a novel method for the automatic recognition of acoustic utterances is presented using acoustic images as the basis for the feature extraction. This method effectively employs the spectrogram, the Wigner-Ville distribution and co-occurrence matrices. The images are then compressed, using statistical methods, before being combined into a single feature matrix to be presented to a classifier. Initial results obtained from the classification of a database of sport sounds and gunshots indicate that the method is capable of accurate discrimination for coarse and fine classification respectively.

The contribution deals with the real time hardware implementation of the video compression algorithms. The real time media TM-1300 IREF PCI bus board used for research and education in Laboratory of television technique and video technique FEEC BUT is introduced. The different standards used for coding audio-visual information in a digital compressed format are presented in this paper too. Besides the MPEG family standards and the wavelet-based compression, the 3D-DCT transform is outline as well.

Multimedia technology has been applied to many kinds of applications and the amount of multimedia data is growing dramatically. Especially the usage of digital video data is very popular today. Thus, content-based indexing and retrieval in video is getting more important in the future. In this paper, we propose a new approach for indexing video based on the content of the keyframe. Firstly we explain how this approach is flexible at future improvements in comparison with other methods, and then we propose our keyframe indexing method, based on spatial relationships in the keyframe. For this aim, we will use the virtual image.

The summarization of video content provides an effective way to speed up video browser and assist for video retrieval, this paper proposes a novel method for automatically summarizing multi-view video contents. Three kinds of content views such as semantic-face, video caption and visual features are presented in this paper. First, the human faces in video and images bear significant semantics, thus we can summarize video content by indexing and analyzing video faces, especially for video news. Second, video caption could be used to generate video summarization with high-level semantics since it implied lots of semantics inherently. Finally, the similar video shots could be integrated into concise representation through clustering and mining of visual features.

In this paper, a robust and efficient watermarking algorithm is proposed for copyright protection of digital images. The proposed algorithm can also be extended to video sequences. Based on Ho et al.'s image-in-image watermarking algorithm A.T.S. Ho, et al. (2002), the proposed algorithm uses an integer discrete cosine transform (IntDCT) (2003). It is based on the IntDCT transform used in the state-of-the-art video compression standard H.264 (2002), rather than the conventional DCT used in the prior video standards. The most significant advantage of this transform is that it is free from any floating-point or fixed-point multiplication required by the original DCT and all operations can be carried out with integer arithmetic, without loss of accuracy. The proposed algorithm can embed a small image such as a company's trademark into the original cover images. The algorithm's performance is evaluated using StirMark 4.0. Experimental results show that this proposed algorithm can survive attacks such as scaling, additive noise, line removal as well as JPEG compression. The simplicity of the integer DCT transform also offers a significant advantage in shorter processing time and ease of hardware implementation than commonly used DCT techniques.

Semantic sports video analysis has attracted more and more attention recently. In this paper, we present a basketball event detection method by using multiple modalities. Instead of using low-level features, the proposed method is built upon visual and auditory mid-level features i.e. semantic shot classes and audio keywords. Promising event detection results have been achieved. By heuristically mapping semantic shot classes and by aligning audio keywords with semantic shot classes, we have been able to detect nine basketball events. Experimental results have shown our proposed method is effective for basketball event detection.

Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is not a good measure of perceived picture quality, especially at low bit rates of coding. This paper proposes a new approach for computing perceptual distortion for visual signal in order to provide an objective measure for perceptual quality at low bit rate coding in typically mobile communications. The regions with three major perceptually disturbing artifacts, namely, damaged edge, blockiness and ringing, are detected as the basis of assessment. The correlation of the metric with human perception has been demonstrated with low bit rate CIF test data.

This work presents the classification of images collected on the World Wide Web, using a supervised classification method, called IDS (itemized dichotomizer 3). The classification consists in separating the images into two semantic classes: graphics and photographs. Photographs include natural scenes, like people, faces, animals, flowers, landscapes and cities. Graphics are logos, drawings, icons, maps, and backgrounds, usually generated by computer. To validate the classifier we used the k-fold cross-validation method. In the experimental tests 96.1% of the images were correctly classified.

In this paper we propose a novel approach to colour texture classification based on fusion of the information contained in different colour spaces. In colour texture classification the choice of the most effective colour space to use is still an open issue. However, combining the strengths of different colour spaces may offer an alternative solution to the problem of robust texture discrimination. The principal aim of the work presented here is to study the performance of such decision combination approaches using classifiers obtained through training on features extracted from a number of colour space and subspace representations of the same texture classes. To this end we performed a number of cross-validation experiments involving six different colour spaces and their chromatic subspaces. Our results strongly suggest that colour texture classification can benefit significantly from techniques based on multiple classifier combination strategies.

With the rapid development and wide spread of digital cameras, sizable personal digital image libraries would become mainstay of our digital assets for recording pictorial memories in our lives. As a matter of fact, most consumers cannot afford the time to annotate and organize their personal digital photos, they would face genuine problem of accessing them effectively and efficiently. More often than not, consumers wish to share a selective summary of their images with their relatives and friends, increasingly using remote repository services and messaging services (emails, multimedia message service). In this paper, we address this issue with automatic organization based on analysis of time stamps and image content to facilitate browsing and summarization of personal digital photos. In particular, both photo creation time and image content are exploited to efficiently partition related images in two stages. From the partitions, key photos are selected to represent the partition based on content analysis and then collated to generate a summary, which can be enjoyed as a slide show for visual communication. We demonstrate our approach on genuine heterogeneous personal digital photos with encouraging results. We also develop a photo summarization application with multimedia message service on Nokia 7650 camera phone emulator.
