A robust image watermarking technique based on Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is introduced in the paper. By utilizing the masking properties of the human visual system (HVS), a grayscale watermark is chosen which is found to be more robust against various attacks. Comparing with other watermarking schemes (for example, by Cox et. al. [1]), our proposed ICA based watermarking scheme can successfully extract a watermark where watermark embedding can be done either instantaneously or convolutively. Various existing ICA algorithms are employed and compared in terms of watermark extraction performance. This paper also shows the robustness in watermark extraction against some standard imageprocessing attacks such as scaling, cropping, rotation, JPEG compression, filtering, additive noise, multiple marks and collusion.

In this paper, we present a novel wavelet image coding method based on the concept of directional dilation. We investigate the relationship among coefficients within and cross subbands and find that the concept of directional dilation is very helpful in expressing positions of significant coefficients. Furthermore, we try to combine two efficient ways: in-band directional dilation and quad-tree prediction together. According to this, we designed a new wavelet encoder, and experiment results show that the proposed method can outperform many famous algorithms in literature yet still possesses the embedded property.

This is video complemented with additional information that is somehow relevant to the semantic video content. We touch upon the technique that is used for video augmentation, which is video subject detection followed by information searches on the subject. A focus of this paper is on subject detection implemented using traditional text analysis tools;video segmentation is based on these results and visualprocessing. We describe the architecture of such a system and the benefits to the consumer. Further we discuss a preliminary system that shows the viability of the concept.

With the development of ISO-MPEG-4 and ITU-T H.26L video coding standards, and a growing interest in low computational complexity video solutions for mobile devices, there is a need for simple yet accurate statistical representations to model the rate-distortion characteristics of video data. In this paper we propose a new rate-distortion model, specifically, a new distortion-quantization model. Although more generally applicable, the model proposed in this paper is especially useful for low bitrate coding. We discuss the plausibility of the model using analytical means. We then examine coded video data from several sequences to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. The chi-squared test and the coefficient of determination are used for this purpose. Finally, we show the use of the model in real-time rate control for a very-low-bitrate video communication application.

In this paper a new watermarking algorithm for digital images operating in the frequency domain is presented: a sequence of pseudo-random real numbers is embedded in a selected set of DCT coefficients. After embedding, the watermark is adapted to the image to be signed by exploiting the masking characteristics of the Human visual System in order to achieve watermark invisibility without diminishing its robustness. The paper presents a cognitive model of color categorization and discusses its applications to color image quality. The structure of color categories is argued to resemble the structure of the distribution of colors in the perceived world. This distribution can be represented as color statistics in some perceptual and approximately uniform color space (e.g., the CIELUV color space). The process of color categorization can be modeled through the grouping of color statistics by clustering algorithms (e.g., K-means). This model explains the location, and rank of color categories. The model might be considered as a first step towards developing a uniform cognitive color space. The equality of distances between color categories can be the criterion of uniformity for such a space. It is argued that some imageprocessing techniques (e.g., gamut mapping, color quantization, segmentation, coding etc.) might be more appropriate to perform in a cognitively uniform color space.

Adaptive processing of structured data using supervised learning scheme has been successfully applied to many domains, e.g., molecular biology, image classification and retrieval. A self organizing map (SOM) type algorithm for processing of structured data using an unsupervised learning approach has recently been proposed. In this paper, we present an approach using quadtree representation to extract an image structure, and the application of such structured SOM to image classification problems. Encouraging results achieved by using only six simple visual features show that the structured SOM works well for structural information.
