Adaptive processing of structured data using supervised learning scheme has been successfully applied to many domains, e.g., molecular biology, image classification and retrieval. A self organizing map (SOM) type algorithm for processing of structured data using an unsupervised learning approach has recently been proposed. In this paper, we present an approach using quadtree representation to extract an image structure, and the application of such structured SOM to image classification problems. Encouraging results achieved by using only six simple visual features show that the structured SOM works well for structural information.

The goal of imageprocessing is generally to identify objects and their relationships in a digital image. The first step in this process is normally the identification of the edges in the digital image. There are many different ways to do this and they will be discussed briefly in the background and literature section. This paper assumes that a given object is presented and the software program is asked to determine if that particular object is present in a given image. The final result would consist of informing the user that the object was represented in the image and computing the pixel position of the search object in the given image. Of course if the object is not found, the user should be given that information. The proposed algorithm uses cubic Bezier curves to represent both the search object and the edges identified in the image. The advantages of the Bezier curve approach are discussed.

Color vector quantization (VQ) has been an efficient still image compression scheme as well as a popular bitmap graphics format for display devices with limited color capability. In this paper we are proposing a color vector quantization-based video coder, exploiting the temporal stationary nature of color distribution among a group of pictures (GOP) over a short period. Color VQ is applied first to reduce the RGB image sequence into a single channel color index image. Motion estimation and compression is then performed in the index space, instead of the separate YCbCr channels. Initial results demonstrated that the proposed coder can provide good compression rates. By eliminating the need for an inverse DCT and color conversion, typical requirements in a JPEG/MPEG type of coders, the decoding is computationally very simple. This makes it suitable for certain applications like media playback, and visualcommunications with low-end mobile devices.

In this work we present a new algorithm for digital images unsupervised enhancement, called ACE for Automatic Color Equalization. It is based on a new computational approach that merges the "Gray World" and "White Patch" equalization mechanisms, while taking into account the spatial distribution of color information. Inspired by some adaptation mechanisms of the human visual system, ACE is able to adapt to widely varying lighting conditions, and to extract visual information from the environment efficaciously. ACE has shown promising results in solving the color constancy problem and performing an image dynamic data driven stretching. Tests and results are presented.

Microarray image technology is a powerful tool for monitoring the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously. Each microarray experiment produces immense amounts of image data, and efficient Storage and transmission requires compression that utilizes microarray image Is structure and unique analysis goals. Hence, we have developed a progressive compression scheme for microarray images which can be either lossy or lossless. Our scheme has a coded data structure that allows fast decoding and reprocessing of image subsets, and includes summary statistics and image segmentation information. Since visual fidelity is not the end goal for microarray images, we introduce a new measure of distortion for lossy compression: the sensitivity of microarray information extraction to compression loss. We find that a lossy compression ratio of 8:1 for cDNA microarrays minimally affects downstream processing. The average lossless compression ratio is 1.83:1 for cDNA images and 2.43:1 for inkjet images, comparable to state-of-the-art lossless schemas, yet with added flexibility and information.

In this paper we present an error concealment technique for object-coded sequences using the MPEG-4 video coding standard. This method, which is based on using global motion estimation for boundary recovery, consists of boundary extraction, boundary patching using global motion compensation, and object filling to reconstruct the damaged video object.

In this article we present a new method for automatic landmark extraction from the contours of biological specimens. Our ultimate goal is to enable automatic identification of biological specimens in photographs and drawings held in a database. We propose to use Active Appearance Models for visual indexing of both photographs and drawings. Automatic landmark extraction will assist us in building the models. Below we describe the results of using our method on drawings and photographs of examples of diatoms, and present an Active Shape Model built using automatically extracted data.
