In this paper, we propose a new image retrieval system that provides users with both semantics based query and visual features based query. Our system has several advantages. First, it integrates visual features and semantics seamlessly. Second, it uses some effective techniques such as image classification, relevance feedback to bridge the gap between visual features and semantics. Third, it proposes several ways to obtain the semantic information of the image, which reduces manual labor and reduces the "subjectivity" of semantics by human. Fourth, it can update semantics of the image by human's intervention, which makes the image retrieval more flexible. We have implemented an image retrieval system based on our proposed image retrieval approach. Experiments on an image database containing 22000 show that our scheme can achieve high efficiency.

Noise removal techniques such as the K-nearest neighbour filter and the a-trimmed mean filter are known to be very robust in still image noise removal, but they have not been exploited in video processing. In this paper we investigate their 3D-extension for use in video sequence noise removal. We also determine the optimal balance between temporal and spatial window size, the optimal values of the other parameters and finally we investigate the artefacts introduced by the filters. The results show that the new video K-nearest neighbour filter outperforms the video version of the alpha-trimmed mean and the state-of-the-art rational filter by Ramponi from both a PSNR and a visual quality point of view.

In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective fractal-wavelet scheme for edge-preserving smoothing of noisy images. Over the past decade, there has been significant interest in fractal coding for the purpose of image compression. Fractal-wavelet transforms were introduced in an effort to reduce the blockiness and computational complexity that are inherent in fractal image compression. Applications of fractal-based coding to other aspects of imageprocessing, however, have received little attention. Recently, the authors proposed a simple yet effective fractal-based image denoising scheme that is applied in the spatial domain of the image. In this paper we extend the application of this fractal denoising scheme to the wavelet domain of the image. We find that when the wavelet transform of the noisy image is simply fractally coded, a significant amount of the noise is suppressed. However, one can go a step further and estimate the fractal code of the wavelet transform of the original noise-free image from that of the wavelet transform of the noisy image. The use of the quadtree partitioning scheme for the purpose of fractal-wavelet coding results in a significantly enhanced and restored representation of the original noisy image. The enhancement is consistent with the human visual system where extra smoothing is performed in flat and low activity regions and a lower degree of smoothing is performed near high frequency components, e.g. edges, of the image. The main advantage of the wavelet-based fractal denoising scheme over the standard fractal denoising scheme is that it is computationally less expensive.

visual surveillance systems are often installed in concourses, car park areas and high security sites to monitor the flow of pedestrians and vehicles for security and data analysis. The job of monitoring image sequences is usually assigned to a human operator who waits for important events or specially appointed objects to occur. Operators become bored and lose concentration. It is therefore essential to devise autonomous surveillance systems, which can search and track appointed objects in a wide region and alert a human operator only when appointed objects appear in these watched areas. We report a study on a new region-wide automatic visual search and pursuit surveillance system for appointed objects using networks. By processingimage sequences on the basis of object properties, such color and shape (vehicle) or height and gait (pedestrian), the system can search, recognize and track the appointed object. The system uses multiple cameras and every camera carries a set of software. We explain the integrated software system and show an experiment system and experimental results. The system recognizes objects region-wide by using a network. Correct classification yields are 92% for vehicles, 64% for pedestrians. The system is able to process about 2 frames per second.

Fast arid efficient disparity estimation (DE) is a key technology in stereoscopic image sequence processing. On the basis of analyzing the correlation between disparity vectors and motion vectors, a new fast disparity estimation algorithm for stereo video coding is presented in this paper. The few-color images are often synthetic graphics without complicated color and texture variation, which makes the embedding of invisible digital watermark difficult. This paper proposes a data hiding method that can hide a moderate amount of data in a few-color image, such as cartoon images, binary images, without introducing noticeable artifacts. To achieve least visual quality reduction, the prioritized pattern matching scheme is employed to embed the invisible data in the pixels those are close to the boundaries. The block permutation is also exploited before embedding. No additional color is introduced and the palette keeps unchanged after embedding. Extracting of the hidden data does not require the knowledge of the original image. The experimental results show that the approach achieves a quite great performance in visibility transparency. It is applicable to invisible annotation, covert communication etc.
