Demands on an effective telemedicine system have been ever increasing. With the advent of computer and communication technologies, construction of an effective telemedicine system becomes possible. In this paper, we present a Web-based medical imageprocessing system for telemedicine applications. First, we identify functional requirements for a medical imageprocessing system. Then we describe the structure and functions of our system, named KoMIPS (Konkuk Medical imageprocessing System). The system provides the following facilities: (1) imageprocessing such as zoom in/out, rotation, mirror/flip, and reverse, (2) image analysis such as MCA (Multi Channel Analyzer), ROI (Region of Interest) and contrast control, and (3) DICOM encoding/decoding. A prototype has been developed and showed the usefulness of our approach.

The FlexWave-II has been developed as a dedicated image compression component for spaceborn applications, enabling a multitude of application scenarios, including lossless and lossy compression. The FlexWave-II provides scalable compression, allowing gradual enhancement or de gradation of the image quality in a programmable way. A wavelet-based compression scheme has been selected because of the intrinsic scalable characteristics. Moreover the compression criteria can be tuned separately for optimal measurement and visual data compression. The FlexWave-II provides full scalability features and high processing performance. It supports push-broom imageprocessing. The wavelet transform engine is capable of computing up to 5 levels of wavelet transform with 5/3-, 9/3- or 9/7-tap wavelet filters, for image sizes as large as 1k x 1k pixels. On an FPGA implementation, clocked on 41 MHz, a processing performance of up to 10 Mpixels/second was measured. The wavelet compression engine allows two compression modes: a fixed compression ratio mode optimised for user-defined criteria and a fixed quantisation mode with user defined quantisation tables.

In this paper, we propose a modified shape adaptive discrete wavelet transform (SA DWT). In conventional SA DWT method, after several levels of decomposition, the number of coefficients that has no parent in coarser scale is usually large and uncontrollable. If a tree-structure coding method is applied to the wavelet coefficients, the coding efficiency will be decreased by these coefficients. In our proposed method the boundary of object neods to be extrapolated first and then symmetric reflection is applied. By using this kind of procedure, the number of coefficients without parent can be reduced. The proposed SA DWT is also non-expansive. We establish a modified SPIHT coding algorithm to test the new method's contribution to coding efficiency. Experiment results show that the proposed method can produce more regular LL band figure and achieve a better rate-distortion curve than that of a conventional one.

This paper presents a perceptual image quality assessment metric based on the Visible Differences Predictor (VDP) proposed by Daly. The proposed metric operates in two modes. In a quality mode, the metric produces a single value representation of the overall visible image quality (VIQ), whereas in a distortion mode, the metric provides four distortion values each associated to a specific type of image content. The correlation coefficient between the objective VIQ and subjective test results is 0.96, compared to 0.86 obtained by the PSNR measure.

The indexing and retrieval of images in a multimedia database can be a very time consuming process, considering the amount of visual data stored in digital video libraries (DVLs). This paper proposes a semi-automated method to categorize images into groups as a pre-processing step in order to enable faster retrieval from a DVL. The wavelet transform is used to extract low-level features such as colour, texture and shape from images. The extracted features are employed to categorize the images using a novel neural network, the self-organizing tree map. The classification results are then used to train a feed forward neural network to identify the image classes an incoming query image belongs to. Initial experiments show promising results.

In this paper, we propose a color segmentation algorithm based on contrast information and adaptive thresholds. Given a color image, instead of the commonly used achromatic difference and chromatic difference, we use achromatic contrast and chromatic contrast to represent the significance of boundary. To fit for human's visual perception, adaptive thresholds are applied to suppress perceptually faint boundaries. A complete segmentation scheme is proposed and the simulation results demonstrate the superiority of this approach in providing reasonable and reliable color segmentation.
