This paper presents a new human skin color model in YCbCr color space and its application to human face detection. Skin colors are modeled by a set of three Gaussian clusters, each of which is characterized by a centroid and a covariance matrix. The centroids and covariance matrices are estimated from large set of training samples after a k-means clustering process. Pixels in a color input image can be classified into skin or non-skin based on the Mahalanobis distances to the three clusters. Efficient post-processing techniques namely noise removal, shape criteria, elliptic curve fitting and face/non-face classification are proposed in order to further refine skin segmentation results for the purpose of face detection.

This paper describes a method of human short hair modeling and real time animation. A method is proposed to model the short hair First, a hair style model is derived from a scalp model interactively. Then, the hair model is derived automatically from the hair style and scalp models. Texture mapping is applied to hair model for a better visual effect. For animation, a method is proposed based on an approximation of the accurate physically-based hair model, from which the 3D morphing key shapes are derived. Then, the intermediate shapes are computed by applying 3D morphing. We have implemented it and compared the results with real hair The visual quality and frame rate are satisfactory for real time applications.

The main advantages of the scheme are the uniform diffusion of information to multiple packets, the flexible control mechanism over the representation redundancy, and the possibility of having a detail preserving post-processing routine to reduce the reconstruction error. In this paper, we present the real-time implementation of image filtering for impulse and mixture of impulsive and multiplicative noise removal with detail preservation by means of use of DSP TMS320C6701. The filtering scheme is given for two filters connected in cascade. In the first stage, we use the MM-KNN (Median M-type K-Nearest Neighbor) filter to provide detail preservation and impulsive noise rejection. The second stage is proposed to use an M filter to provide multiplicative noise suppression. We use different types of influence functions in the M-estimator to provide better noise suppression. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed filter consistently outperforms other filters by balancing the tradeoff between noise suppression and detail preservation.

To enable the efficient comparison of striation marks in forensic science, tools for the automated detection of similarities between them are necessary. Such marks show a groove-like texture which can be considered as a "fingerprint" of the associated tool. Thus, a reliable detection of connections between different toolmarks from the identical tool can be established. In order to avoid the time-consuming visual inspection of toolmarks, automated approaches for the evaluation of marks are essential. Such approaches are commonly based on meaningful characteristics extracted from images of the marks that are to be examined. Besides of a high recognition rate, the required computation time plays an important role within the design of an adequate comparison strategy. The cross-correlation function presented in this paper provides a faithful quantitative measure to determine the degree of similarity. It is shown that appropriate modelling of the signal characteristics considerably improves the performance of methods based on the cross-correlation function. A strategy for quantitative assessment of comparison strategies is introduced. It is based on the processing of a test archive of marks and analyses the comparison results statistically. For a convenient description of the assessment results, meaningful index numbers are introduced and discussed.

As a result, imageprocessing algorithms often behave differently on these two types of images, Classifying images and processing them using the method that is best to the image type may yield optimal results. In this paper, we propose to use image smoothness features to determine whether a scanned image was originally a synthetic graphic, or a natural picture. Synthetic graphics are usually very smooth. On the contrary, natural pictures are often noisier and texture rich. A classifier can therefore be built based on the measurement of the texture energy.

The Trade Union of turkey in France (CIDEF) and National Institute of Agronomical Research (Research Meat station of INRA) study the turkey breast meat color to predict meat transformation yield and the consumers' acceptability of fresh fillets. They have asked to Cemagref to develop a new tool based on color numerical vision to determine the relevant objective color measurements which could give prediction of the breast transformation yield to minimize economic loss of the production of turkey ham. In this research project we devised a vision system to research and measure turkey breast meat visual features. A color vision system was developed and calibrated to grab color images and segmentation methods were applied to locate tissues of breast and to measure their color. To find efficient aspect variables, the color results were studied, in relation to breast transformation yield and other measurements included meat pH.
