According to the interactive model of consonant place of articulation perception, the vowel context not only biases place decisions but also affects the processing of the place cues. Data on the perception of French fricative-vowel syllables suggest that contextual effects are indeed interactive, thereby confirming previous findings in Dutch. This paper presents an improved rank-conditioned median filter, with the ability of the median filter to remove the impulse noise and the rank conditioned median filter to preserve edges and fine image details. The center pixel that lies outside the trimming range after ranking in the rank-conditioned median algorithm may not be the corrupted pixel, but it may be a pixel on the edge or image detail and therefore, it is further verified if the central sample is a possible candidate for being an impulse by thresholding. Scene rendering or the conversion of higher dynamic range input generated by a capture device or synthetically to a lower dynamic range for reproduction on a different device presents unique processing challenges. This paper summarizes and compares several techniques for scene rendering. The paper specifically addresses the issue of dynamic range mapping, independent of demosaicing, camera calibration, flare compensation, and white point estimation. There are a number of computational, image attribute, application and visual phenomena to be considered. Qualitative comparisons are also provided for several of the algorithms.

One way to describe the problem of digital halftoning is as a search for the quantized image that minimizes the visibility of artifacts. To apply this approach in practice, it is first necessary to specify a computational model for computing visible error that can be used to rank candidate images automatically. The model may be incorporated directly into a search algorithm, or used after-the-fact to rank images produced by algorithms that are more heuristic. These approaches have been quite successful when applied to achromatic images, even when using a relatively simple visual model accounting for high-frequency contrast sensitivity but with no masking. This approach can be directly generalized to additional dimensions such as time and color. visual models based on threshold measures may not be optimal for low bit rate conditions where quantization noise is visible. Instead, the degree to which the noise is effortlessly segmented through perceptual scission may influence the utility of the final image.

In this paper, we present a region-based scalable coding technique that can be used in interactive image/video communications. This method has a capability of near lossless coding for a specific region of interest (ROI), while the rest of the region is coded with high quality lossy codec. There are many potential applications of the region-based scalable video coding method in the areas of interactive communications such as storm tracking, wild fire and air traffic monitoring using satellite still images and near real time video sequences. It enables the server/client system to reduce data traffic across the networks while the quality of a specific area of interest chosen for each client's needs is still satisfied. We tested this technique by applying it to still images and traffic monitoring image sequences. The results consistently show high level of performance.

The JVT/H.26L video coding scheme conceptually consists of a Video Coding Layer (VCL) responsible mainly for coding efficiency and a Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) that supports video specific transport features for a variety of networks. This paper describes the H.26L/JVT NAL in general, including the parameter set concept and the transport over packet-based and bit-stream oriented networks. Encapsulation of coded video data to RTP/UDP/IP transport is discussed, and applications of H.26L in fixed and wireless IP-based transmission environments are presented.
