Several direct conversion receiver architectures are introduced and analyzed for their performance. Issues relating to the quadrature imbalances and DC offset impairments are analyzed and detailed. This paper investigates the use of the Bayesian inference for devising an example-based rendering procedure. As prior model of this Bayesian inference, we exploit the multiscale non-parametric model recently proposed by Wei et al. for texture synthesis. This model appears to be interesting to also capture some characteristics of a rendering style from an artistic illustration example. Obtained results, with a prior model capturing the rendering style of drawing samples or trained with synthetic and real input textures, are presented. Our results indicate that the proposed method allows to simulate automatic synthesis of various illustration style. More generally, the proposed scheme is able to re-render an input image in the style of an other image allowing, in this way, to create a very broad range of artistic and visual effects.

This review of medical imaging informaties is a survey of current developments in an exciting field. The focus is on informatics issues rather than traditional data processing and information systems, such as picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and imageprocessing and analysis systems. In this review, we address imaging informatics issues within the requirements of an informatics system defined by the American Medical Informatics Association. With these requirements as a framework, we review, in four sections: (1) Methods to present imaging and associated data without causing an overload, including image study summarization, content-based medical image retrieval, and natural language processing of text data. (2) Data modeling techniques to represent clinical data with focus on an image data model, including general-purpose time-based multimedia data models, healthcare-specific data models, knowledge models, and problem-centric data models. (3) Methods to integrate medical data information from heterogeneous clinical data sources. Advances in centralized databases and mediated architectures are reviewed along with a discussion on our efforts at data integration based on peer-to-peer networking and shared file systems. (4) visualization schemas to present imaging and clinical data: the large volume of medical data presents a daunting challenge for an efficient visualization paradigm. In this section we review current multimedia visualization methods including temporal modeling, problem-specific data organization, including our problem-centric, context and user-specific visualization interface.

This paper presents a new conceptual framework for summarization that considers the relationship between entities, device properties and user information needs. We summarize using a skim - an audio-visual clip that is a drastically condensed version of the original video. An entity is defined to be a sequence of elements that are related to each other by a certain property. In this paper we discuss the causes, the different entity types and also present a skim taxonomy. Each entity is associated with a utility. The skim is generated by a constrained utility maximization over those entity-utilities that satisfy the user information needs as well as the device rendering capabilities. We construct an optimal skim within this framework that retains a particular subset of entities. These entities have been chosen since they can be automatically computed in a robust manner. The user studies show that the optimal skims perform well in a statistically significant sense, at compression rates as high as 90%.

image quality assessment plays an important role in various imageprocessing applications. A great deal of effort has been made in recent years to develop objective image quality metrics that correlate with perceived quality measurement. Unfortunately, only limited success has been achieved. In this paper, we provide some insights on why image quality assessment is so difficult by pointing out the weaknesses of the error sensitivity based framework, which has been used by most image quality assessment approaches in the literature. Furthermore, we propose a new philosophy in designing image quality metrics: The main function of the human eyes is to extract structural information from the viewing field, and the human visual system is highly adapted for this purpose. Therefore, a measurement of structural distortion should be a good approximation of perceived image distortion. Based on the new philosophy, we implemented a simple but effective image quality indexing algorithm, which is very promising as shown by our current results.

We develop a wearable vision system that consists of a user's visual direction sensor and stereo cameras. First, we establish a method for calibrating the system so that it can detect user's blink points even in a real situation such that the depth of blink points changes. Next, we propose a method for detecting a gazing region of a user in terms of the planar convex polygon. In our method, the system first identifies the fixation point of a user, and then applies a stereo algorithm and robust statistics to detect his gazing region. Now the system can detect the gazing region of a user and provide him with its 3D position.

In general, the stereo input images obtained by the parallel-axis camera system lacks in the common field of view and the disparity information of the object due to its configuration limitation. In this paper, a new scheme is proposed, in which this stereopsis can be improved by adaptively controlling the disparity of the input stereo images. In the proposed method, each object in the stereo input image is segmented by considering the relative distance information of them and then, each segmented object is horizontally shifted according to these values, in which especially the differential shifting scheme is applied to maximize the stereopsis of the stereo input images. From some experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method improves the disparity of the original stereo image about 1.6 dB in PSNR. In addition, 6-view stereoscopic image synthesized by the proposed method is presented.
