The concept of an occlusion mesh model is introduced. An object tracking algorithm based on an occlusion mesh model is proposed. A modified occlusion detection method is considered to improve the detection accuracy. A mesh nodes motion estimation method based on feature window matching is presented to achieve sub-pixel resolution and overcome block artifacts produced by block matching. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is practical and feasible, it can be used for object tracking effectively. Also it solves the 2D motion estimation problem existing in occlusion regions and shows better visual performance.

For the purpose of this study, we implemented a trustworthy video transmission system through turbo code, which has excellent error correction ability, in order to restore data error effectively generated by noise when transmitting real time data, security data, video data, etc. The image processing system, NTSC (National Television System Committee) video signal from CCTV, and video camera, etc. were converted from analog to digital (A/D conversion) transmission through a video decoder. The converted digital image information was output into two image fields. In this study, by applying the algorithm in which one field was selected of the two, we made a logic circuit of the erasable programmable logic device (EPLD) and implemented a system that reduces digital video data by half. In the encoder/decoder system of the turbo code, the turbo code was implemented using a digital signal processor (DSP) with which real number calculation is possible. The interleaver part that affects the performance of the turbo code was designed by applying a block interleaver.

An extension of superresolution methods MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) and ESPRIT (Estimation of Signal Parameters by Rotational Invariance Techniques) to spaces of arbitrary dimension is proposed in the paper. Generalizations of signal model, spatial smoothing method and estimate equations are provided. Although many applications can be considered in the areas of radar and wireless communications, only one of them is considered for simulation results: high resolution 3D radar target imaging. The concluding remarks drawn in the final part of the paper are supported by simulation results performed on echo signals from a synthetic target. The discussed methods are also compared to the scattering center extraction using the Fourier transform.

A real-time visual processing system using a general-purpose vision chip, an image sensor in which photo detectors and processing elements are integrated, is described. In order to control the vision chip and process its output at high speed, a novel architecture called SPARSIS, in which the control process of the vision chip is pipelined and integrated with a RISC type integer pipeline, was developed. This architecture can guarantee real-tune operation with high temporal resolution, and even makes possible software-controlled A/D conversion. Sample algorithms demonstrating its fine-grained real timeliness, and experimental results with the implemented system, are also described.

Transmission of hybrid coded video including motion compensation and spatial prediction over error-prone channels results in the well-known problem of spatio-temporal error propagation at the decoder. A widely accepted standard-compliant technique to enhance the quality of the decoded video significantly is the more frequent introduction of intra-coded macroblocks. However, intra-coded information generally requires more bit rate. Therefore, a careful selection of intra-updates in terms of rate and distortion is necessary. A flexible and robust rate-distortion optimization technique is presented to select coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. The channel statistics are included in the optimization process. We derive a method to obtain an estimate of the decoder pixel distortion at the encoder. The presented techniques are verified within the new H.26L/JVT video coding standard based on common test conditions.

Color is one of the main visual cues and has been frequently used in image processing, analysis and retrieval. The extraction of high-level color descriptors is an increasingly important problem, as these descriptions often provide link to image content. When combined with image segmentation color naming can be used to select objects by color, describe the appearance of the image and even generate semantic annotations. For example, regions labeled as light blue and strong green may represent sky and grass, vivid colors are typically found in man-made objects, and modifiers such as brownish, grayish and dark convey the impression of the atmosphere in the scene. This paper presents a computational model for color categorization, naming and extraction of color composition. In this work we start from the National Bureau of Standards recommendation for color names, and through subjective experiments develop our color vocabulary and syntax. Next, to attach the color name to an arbitrary input color, we design a perceptually based color naming metric. Finally, we extend the method and develop a scheme for extracting the color composition of a complex image. The algorithm follows the relevant neurophysiological findings and studies on human color categorization. In testing the method the known color regions in different color spaces were identified accurately, the color names assigned to randomly selected colors agreed with human judgments, and the color composition extracted from natural images was consistent with human observations.

During the last decade, a significant effort has been put into designing watermarking algorithms. The watermarking community now needs some advanced attacks and fair benchmarks in order to compare the performances of different watermarking technologies. Moreover, attacks permit the weaknesses of an algorithm to be found and consequently trigger further research in order to overcome the problem. These ideas motivated the creation of the European Certimark project. After a short definition of dewatermarking, we present an original attack based on self similarities. This attack is then put to the test with three different publicly available watermarking tools. Finally, we discuss briefly the feasibility of a generic attack i.e. a dewatermarking attack which should succeed in removing whatever watermarks have been inserted by whatever watermarking tools.

A simple and fast method of motion parameter estimation for tracking a moving rigid object is proposed. With the proposed method of spatial filter velocimetry, the spatial distribution of image motion or global motion parameters can be estimated by using a large number of small spatial filters arranged regularly in the image plane. Global motion parameters, such as translation, rotation, and dilation, can be isolated, identified and measured by evaluating the frequency distribution of the outputs from the spatial filters along a closed circular contour in the image plane. Experiments were performed in order to maintain the size and position of the object's image by using a camera of which the attitude is controllable. The proposed system, composed of only a commercially available PC, exhibited good tracking performances with processing rate of 15 frames per second.

The paper presents a segmentation algorithm to extract the endocardial and epicardial walls of the left ventricle in MR cardiac images. The algorithm is based on a generalized gradient vector flow (GGVF) snake and a prediction of initial contour (PIC). Especially, the proposed algorithm uses physical characteristics of endocardial and epicardial contours, cross profile correlation matching (CPCM), and a mixed interpolation model. The proposed method is applied to short axis MR cardiac image sets, which are obtained by Siemens, Medinus, and GE MRI systems. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can extract acceptable epicardial and endocardial walls. In addition, we calculate quantitative parameters from the segmented results, which are displayed graphically. The segmented left ventricle is visualized volumetrically by surface rendering. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the Windows environment using visual C++.

In the paper the actual state of a system is presented that is aimed to learn driving autonomously different vehicles on different courses exclusively by visual input. The subsystem intelligent image processing allows, as required, to locate the road mark edges of each single image. A trained search algorithm allows optimal search speed and high recognition rate and consequently efficiently converts road mark edges into abstract complete situation descriptions (ACSDs) capturing in a storage limited way the current situation the vehicle is in. The subsystem pattern matching successfully retrieves similar situations to the current one based on a pattern matching algorithm. The pattern matching algorithm used in this subsystem is optimised for search speed on one hand and usage for road situations on the other hand. The subsystem reinforcement learning is still under implementation. However, a simple approach implemented so far allows already autonomous driving on a learning-by-knowledge-transfer basis promising further positive results in the area of autonomous driving based on pattern matching.
