The stereo correspondence of two retinal images is one of the most difficult problems in stereo vision because the reconstruction of a 3-D scene is a typical visual ill-posed problem. So far there still have been many unsolved problems, one of which is to reconstruct a 3-D scene for a monochromatic surface. We consider this problem with a two layered self-organization neural network to simulate the competitive and cooperative interaction of binocular neurons. A refined pretreatment approach of a similarity map is proposed in order to carry out computation efficiently. We extend our previous neural network model by expanding the cooperation effect from the neighboring region. We are successful in obtaining stereo disparity perception for a monochromatic surface enclosed by random dot region and two vertical stripes. The experimental results with real scenes show that the monochromatic surface between two black vertical stripes is recognized efficiently through our neural network model.

The major features of adopting systolic arrays (SA) for special purpose processing architectures are: simple and regular design, concurrency in communications, and balancing computation with the I/O. In this paper we synthesize a family of hexagonal arrays, SA(r), that implement matrix multiplication. We have observed that the execution time of a hexagonal array, which has a minimal number of processing elements (PE) for a given problem size, can be reduced if the number of PEs is increased. Since the execution time and the number of PEs are the two most important performance measures of the systolic array, we take their product AT/sup 2/, AT/sup 2/=/spl Omega//sub r/(n)T/sub exe//sup 2/, to compare the arrays from this family. With respect to this performance measure, the best array is obtained for r=[n/2], where n is a dimension of square matrices while r indicates the extension, in terms of rows, of the array that has minimal number of processing elements for a given problem size.

We describe a method for the registration of functional brain data acquired with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on MRI brain images. TMS is a non-invasive method largely used in the study of brain functions. For the registration process we acquire 150 points on the patient's scalp with a magnetic-field digitizer. Then, we minimize the mean square distance between those points and the segmented scalp surface drawn from the MR image. The distance to the scalp surface is computed with the help of a 3D Euclidean distance transformation. For each stimulation, the position of the TMS device is acquired with the digitizer. The registration transformation is applied to the TMS coordinate in order to map TMS data and anatomical information. The results show that the method is precise (4 mm) and reproducible (1 mm).

This paper presents a prototype of a mobile minirobot with an embedded vision system. The robot control is implemented in a low cost microcontroller and the vision system is based in a proprietary CMOS imaging array. The proposed vision sensor has enough flexibility to be incorporated directly to most microcontroller-based systems without any additional electronics. The CMOS camera sensor has random access readout capabilities and the microcontroller uses the camera like a read only external memory. Therefore, the main advantage of this system is that image-processing algorithms can be incorporated directly in a low cost microcontroller, resulting on a compact vision system with decision-making capabilities. The robot autonomous capabilities have been tested in a soccer game scenario where visual tasks such as object localisation and classification are needed.

This paper presents a study of field line visualization techniques. To address both the computational and perceptual issues in visualizing large scale, complex, dense field line data commonly found in many scientific applications, a new texture-based field line representation which we call self-orienting surfaces is introduced This scalable representation facilitates hardware-accelerated rendering and incorporation of various perceptually-effective techniques, resulting in intuitive visualization and interpretation of the data under study. An electromagnetic data set obtained from accelerator modeling and a fluid flow data set from aerodynamics modeling are used for evaluation and demonstration of the techniques.

It is presented in this work new parallel algorithms to train a multilayer perceptron network using the error backpropagation algorithm. An analysis of the different paralleling strategies used is shown and aspects such as-task definition and communications profile were taken into account. An application in image compression illustrates the capacity of these new procedures when compared to the classical approach and to other parallel implementations.

Proposed and demonstrated a novel reflectometry system based on two-photon absorption process in a silicon photodetector. This method can measure the optical path difference of several millimeters to several meters with a simple system configuration. The study on improving the accuracy and resolution is currently under investigation. We also plan to apply the same method to measuring the surface shape of objects using the two-photon absorption of silicon image sensors.

In delay-constrained multimedia communications over the Internet, scalable compressed media formats are useful in that they allow the rate and quality of video delivery to adapt to the changes in the available bandwidth. Previously, we introduced the expected run-time distortion based scheduling (ERDBS) algorithm (Miao and Ortega, Proc. 12th Int. Packet Video Workshop, 2002), which allowed the media source to select in what order packets should be transmitted, where packets contain different "layers" in the scalable representation of the transmitted signal. The basic idea of ERDBS was to calculate at any given time the "importance" of each candidate packet in the transmission buffer, and then proceed to send the most important packet. We now present techniques to reduce the complexity of the ERDBS approach, which could be significant when the set of candidate packets is large. Our proposed algorithm decomposes the packet importance calculation into several stages. We show how, through a proper decomposition of these calculations, the results obtained for some stages during past iterations can be re-used, with updates based on the new information received in the meantime. With this recursive definition of the packet importance calculation, we show that the complexity of ERDBS is reduced without sacrificing its performance.

Applications in the creation of virtual auditory spaces (VAS) and sonification require individualized head related transfer functions (HRTFs) for perceptual fidelity. HRTFs exhibit significant variation from person to person due to differences between their pinnae, and their body sizes. We propose and preliminarily implement a simple HRTF customization based on the use of a published database of HRTFs (Algazi et al., 2001) that also contains geometrical measurements of subject pinnae. We measure some of these features via simple image processing, and select the HRTF that has features most closely corresponding to the individual's features. This selection procedure is implemented along with the virtual auditory system described in (Zotkin et al., 2002), and listener tests conducted comparing the customized HRTF and a fixed HRTF. Despite the simplicity of the method, tests reveal average improvement in localization accuracy of about 25 percent, though performance improvement varies with source location and individuals.

Engineers are expected to understand the structure, goals, and values of the organizations for which they work. Only then can they contribute effectively to these organizations through the production of appropriate goods and services as well as routine communications. Based on the work of Hatch and Schultz (2000), the author offers four concepts (identity, image, brand, and culture) for conducting organizational analysis from varied internal and external perspectives and presents composing practices that follow from this analysis. An advertisement for Ford Motor Company is the primary artifact through which the concepts are examined. As students of engineering enter their respective fields, they must be well equipped to provide not only technical knowledge and skills but also effective communication to the organizations they join. Part of this preparation involves teaching students how to analyze (and critique, if necessary) the goals, values, and priorities of the environments in which they will work, since the context of an organization influences document concerns ranging from audience assumptions to visual layout to language use. This paper addresses some of the ways in which students of engineering might be better prepared to enter the profession through increased knowledge of the workplace, as we as how seasoned engineers might be re-introduced to the purposes behind their work for a particular organization.
