In this article we present a multisensor system for usual landmarks detection in indoor autonomous robot navigation context. This smart sensor combines a CCD camera with a 3D laser camera. The landmarks detection is based on the collaboration between intensity image processing which ensures the planar quadrangle landmarks detection itself and ad hoc 3D laser camera which copes with the specific constraints of our problematic. The process consists in grouping horizontally/vertically oriented segments extracted from the intensity image. The constraints are applied thanks to a relaxation scheme. The next step consists in confirming or rejecting the detected quadrangles regarding their planarity by focusing the 3D laser camera in the environment area defined by these visual targets.

visual information processing technology is very important in the implementation for sensory substitution of visually impaired persons as well as applications to factory automation. This paper outlines the design of a visual support system that provides 3D visual information using 3D virtual sounds. Three-dimensional information, such as distance map, object recognition, and object tracking required for the visually impaired user is obtained by analyzing images captured by stereo cameras. Using a 3D virtual acoustic display, which relies on Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs), the user is informed of the locations and movements of objects. The user's external auditory sense is not impeded as the system uses bone conduction headphones which do not block out environment sounds. The proposed system is expected to be useful in the situations where the infrastructure is incomplete and the situation changes in realtime. We plan experiments using this system to guide users while walking and playing sports.

This article presents the architecture and implementation of an information system for medical data and images. Thanks to a modular and flexible design, it can be implanted in hospital environments with various kinds of communication infrastructures (going from very low bandwidth lines (RTC of 56 Kb) to high capacity lines (ATM of 155 Mb)). Both its design and combination of small functional modules with a well defined entry/exit interface allows us to implement the functionalities required by the users. A database stores not only the information but also the specialist's reports and notes concerning patients and diagnoses. We have incorporated tools that are not found in conventional systems (image segmentation, advanced visualization, etc.) but which allow us to incorporate new data to the decision-making process. The user accesses the system with all its information and functionalities via a user-friendly web interface.

A long-standing research problem in computer graphics is to reproduce the visual experience of walking through a large photorealistic environment interactively. On one hand, traditional geometry-based rendering systems fall short of simulating the visual realism of a complex environment. On the other hand, image-based rendering systems have to date been unable to capture and store a sampled representation of a large environment with complex lighting and visibility *** this paper, we present a "Sea of images," a practical approach to dense sampling, storage, and reconstruction of the plenoptic function in large, complex indoor environments. We use a motorized cart to capture omnidirectional images every few inches on a eye-height plane throughout an environment. The captured images are compressed and stored in a multiresolution hierarchy suitable for real-time prefetching during an interactive walkthrough. Later, novel images are reconstructed for a simulated observer by resampling nearby captured *** system acquires 15,254 images over 1,050 square feet at an average image spacing of 1.5 inches. The average capture and processing time is 7 hours. We demonstrate realistic walkthroughs of real-world environments reproducing specular reflections and occlusion effects while rendering 15-25 frames per second.

This paper presents a new method for characterizing information of a compressed image relative to the original one. We show how the Kullback-Leibler information gain is based on three basic postulates which are natural for image processing and thus desirable. As an example of the proposed measure, we analyze the effects of lossy compression on the identification of breast cancer microcalcifications. We also show the comparative results of the Kullback-Leibler information gain and various quantitative measures for predicting image fidelity in the sense of diagnostic usefulness.

We present a novel coding algorithm based on the tree structured segmentation, which achieves oracle like rate-distortion (R-D) behavior for a simple class of signals, namely piecewise polynomials in the high bit rate regime. We consider a R-D optimization framework, which employs optimal bit allocation strategy among different signal segments to achieve the best tradeoff between description complexity and approximation quality. First, we describe the basic idea of the algorithm for the 1D case. It can be shown that the proposed compression algorithm based on an optimal binary tree segmentation achieves the oracle like R-D behavior (D(R)/spl sim/c/sub 0/2/sup -c1R/) with the computational cost of the order O(NlogN). We then show the extension of the scheme to the 2D case with the similar R-D behavior without sacrificing the computational ease. Finally, we conclude with some experimental results.

In this case study, we explore techniques for the purpose of visualizing isolated flow structures in time-dependent data. Our primary industrial application is the visualization of the vortex rope, a rotating helical structure which builds up in the draft tube of a water turbine. The vortex rope can be characterized by high values of normalized helicity, which is a scalar field derived from the given CFD velocity data. In two related applications, the goal is to visualize the cavitation regions near the runner blades of a Kaplan turbine and a water pump, respectively. Again, the flow structure of interest can be defined by a scalar field, namely by low pressure values. We propose a particle seeding scheme based on quasi-random numbers, which minimizes visual artifacts such as clusters or patterns. By constraining the visualization to a region of interest, occlusion problems are reduced and storage efficiency is gained.

90年代发展形成的脉冲耦合神经网络(PCNN)模型特别适合于图像分割、边缘提取等方面的应用研究,但众所周知,PCNN模型图像分割效果不但取决于PCNN模型中各个参数的合理选择,而且同时还取决于循环迭代次数的确定选择准则,通常循环迭代次数N的选择通过人工交互方式来确定。正因如此选择合适的准则来确定N是PCNN图像分割的关键,但目前还没有文献提出一个合适的准则来解决这个问题。本文结合图像统计特性和PCNN参数模型提出了熵值最大准则。该准则实现了PCNN神经网络的自动图像分割。对于PCNN的理论研究和实际应用具有非常重要的现实意义。

We investigate the behavior knowledge space method (see Xu, L. et al., IEEE Transactions SMC, vol.22, no.3, p.418-35, 1992) and decision templates method (see Kuncheva, L. et al., Pattern Recognition, vol.34, p.299-314, 2001) of classifier fusion in the context of face verification. The study involves six experts which are not only correlated, but also their performance levels differ by as much as a factor of three. Through extensive experiments on the XM2VTS database using the Lausanne protocol, we found that the behavior knowledge space fusion strategy achieved consistently better results than the decision templates method. Most importantly, it exhibited quasi monotonic behavior as the number of experts combined increased. This is a very important conclusion, as it means that the performance of the multimodal system is not degraded by adding experts.

Tracking human faces is an indispensable process in security access control and automatic video surveillance systems. In this paper, we propose a real-time multiple-person tracking system. Firstly, both skin colour and motion components are extracted to generate face-like regions. Those regions regarded as face candidates are further processed by a silhouette analyser to redefine their boundary and verified by our rule-based verification algorithm. Finally a simple method which utilizes the relationship of skin colour and face history is applied to track multiple persons. Experimental results demonstrate that both the accuracy and processing speed are very promising and can be applied for practical use.
