We have developed a computer vision teaching module consisting of materials for two or three lectures and a final project for use in a CS1 programming course. The final project is to write an image processing program with applications in computer vision. The program will read in a two dimensional array of data from a file that represents a black and white photographic image, perform one or more transformations on the data and write the transformed data to a new file. A simple image viewer program is used to display the before and after images. In addition to learning more about programming it is the intent of the project that students also have some fun with images. Most students did indeed enjoy the visual nature of the project and were surprised that they could write a program to accomplish so much after just one programming course. A few students wrote very creative transformation functions. This CS1 module is one of several developed as part of a CRCD project, sponsored by NSF. The modules are available for free use or adaptation by other instructors and institutions.

Mobile multimedia communication has rapidly become a significant area of research and development. The processing requirements for the capture, conversion, compression, decompression, enhancement, display, etc. of high quality multimedia content places heavy demands even on current ULSI (ultra large scale integration) systems, particularly for mobile applications where area and power are primary considerations. The system presented is designed as a vertically integrated (3D) system comprising two distinct layers bonded together using indium bump technology. The top layer is a CMOS imaging array containing analog-to-digital converters, and a buffer memory. The bottom layer takes the form of a configurable array processor (CAP), a highly parallel array of soft programmable processors capable of carrying out complex processing tasks directly on data stored in the top plane. Until recently, the dominant format of data in imaging devices has been analog. The analog photocurrent or sampled voltage is transferred to the ADC via a column or a column/row bus. In the proposed system, an array of analog-to-digital converters is distributed, so that a one-bit cell is associated with one sensor. The analog-to-digital converters are algorithmic current-mode converters. Eight such cells are cascaded to form an 8-bit converter. Additionally, each photosensor is equipped with a current memory cell, and multiple conversions are performed with scaled values of the photocurrent for colour processing.

The ADSP-21020 digital signal processor (DSP) was originally designed by Analog Devices Incorporated (ADI) for high performance audio and video signal processing functions in commercial applications. However, the same functionality is needed for military and space applications related to imaging and communications. Consequently, the original design was licensed to BAE Systems and Atmel Wireless and Microcontrollers for the development of radiation tolerant versions. Both companies presently offer the radiation tolerant parts for applications in space and missile systems. However, each company targeted a slightly different market segment and their products have different radiation hardness levels. The two companies specify the radiation hardness levels differently, and neither provides information on ionizing dose rate performance. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to develop and implement a radiation test methodology to characterize parts from each vendor in a common set of environments. The goal was to obtain a uniform set of data to permit direct comparison of response among the commercial and radiation tolerant devices from each vendor.

Mobile mapping of environment information from a moving platform plays an important role in the automatic acquisition of GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The extraction of railway infrastructure from video frames captured on a driving train requires a robust visual object detection system that provides both high localization accuracy and the capability to cope with uncertain information. This work presents a radial basis functions (RBF) neural network that models appearance based object recognition of traffic lights and railway signs within a probabilistic framework. A comparison of different classifier combination strategies demonstrates that a classifier prioritization scheme based on an information theoretic selection criterion provides the best recognition performance.

We describe a portable PC based platform for computer aided diagnosis (CAD) of functional brain disorders using positron emission tomography (PET) that integrates a variety of methods including quantitative and visual techniques as well as extensively automated procedures. Statistical procedures such as the scaled subprofile model (SSM) in conjunction with principal component analysis are employed to derive neuronal networks that can uniquely identify characteristic metabolic covariance patterns. By measuring the expression of these networks in diseased subjects on an individual basis we can help automate the diagnosis of conditions such as Parkinson's disease and evaluate treatment efficacy and disease progression.

The scenario of using Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) retransmission for two-way low bit-rate video communications over wireless Rayleigh fading channels is studied. In this kind of channel, the packets inevitably experience errors during deep fades. The retransmissions can be used to re-send such packets. During retransmissions, the video encoder buffer fills up quickly and may cause the rate-control algorithm to skip frames or allocate less number of bits to encode the video frame. To reduce the number of frames skipped and improve bit allocation, we propose a content-based rate-control scheme using simplified block-based segmentation to intelligently allocate more bits to the foreground region. In addition, our proposed scheme also takes into consideration the effects of the video buffer fill-up, an a priori channel model, channel feedback information. The simulation results indicate that our proposed scheme encodes the video sequences with higher quality on the foreground region and much fewer frame skipping as compared to H.263 TMN8.

Summary form only given. The ultra-thin silicon-on-sapphire process uses 100 nm silicon on top of fully insulating, optically transparent synthetic sapphire. The process has good thermal conductivity properties and thermal expansion coefficients well-matched to flip-chip-bonded GaAs optical devices. It is one example of a silicon-on-sapphire CMOS process with great potential for photonic integration. We present the design, simulation, fabrication and test of UTSi chips containing several test circuits and subsystems useful for optical communications and interconnections.

Pre-processing algorithms improve on the performance of a video compression system by removing spurious noise and insignificant features from the original images. This increases compression efficiency and attenuates coding artifacts. Unfortunately, determining the appropriate amount of pre-filtering is a difficult problem, as it depends on both the content of an image as well as the target bit-rate of compression algorithm. In this paper, we explore a pre-processing technique that is loosely coupled to the quantization decisions of a rate control mechanism. This technique results in a pre-processing system that operates directly on the Displaced Frame Difference (DFD) and is applicable to any standard-compatible compression system. Results explore the effect of several standard filters on the DFD. An adaptive technique is then considered.

With desktop imaging devices becoming ubiquitous, effectively managing the images in large collections has become a challenge. The requirements for a modem imaging system now demand not only efficient storage (low bit rate coding), but also easy manipulation, indexing and retrieval of images. In this paper, we introduce a new method for colour image coding based on a visual appearance model of local colour image patterns. The visual appearance of small image patterns is characterised by their spatial pattern, colour direction and local energy strength. To encode the local visual appearance, an approach based on vector quantisation (VQ) is introduced. A separate VQ is designed for the spatial pattern and colour direction respectively. It is shown that the method not only achieves good image coding results in terms of rate distortion criterion, it also enables content-based retrieval to be performed in the compressed domain easily and conveniently.
