In recent years, Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have shown excellent performance in the image recognition field. A DCNN is one of the types of multi-layer neural networks, which can automatically obtain feature representation from input data. The Neocognitron, proposed by Kunihiko Fukushima in the 1980s, is a prototype of a DCNN. It was inspired by the hierarchical structure in the mammalian primary visual cortex. On the other hand, a method called Network In Network (NIN) has recently been proposed. This is a network architecture that embeds some translational symmetric micro networks in a DCNN, and it has been experimentally clarified that with it higher classification accuracy is obtained than in a conventional DCNN. However, it cannot be said that NIN has been as sufficiently analyzed from a physiological point of view compared to DCNNs. We focused on the similarities between the processing of NIN, which accumulates the feature extraction filter of a DCNN, and the operation of a mammalian visual structure called an "orientation continuity" which means preferred orientations of neighboring cells changes continuously, and pointed out the relationships between them. We also studied and pointed out the relevance of the neurophysiological knowledge and the process results obtained with high layer of NIN.

Drone technology has advanced to aid applications in field of defense, emergency, disaster relief and digital imaging. Inheriting all such applications for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in low cost scale to make system for ubiquitous for all domains is the motive for our system. Hence, embedding high quality video feed and controlling flight data characteristics to execute several applications. Our system has been devised specifically for air navigation and hence, seamless performance of all the components placed on-board is maintained with high compactness in form factor. First Person View (FPV) is provided for pilots for to achieve long distance mission execution along with image processing for accurate data analysis of flight characteristics. Along with this, the telemetry data procured from Arduino integrated with sensors viz., GPS, Altimeter, IMU assists the pilot for maintaining steady flight characteristics. Our system has been rigorously tested and has also been presented for Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero Design competition to accomplish humanitarian relief operation. The low-cost general processing boards like Raspberry Pi and Arduino facilitates versatility in embedding various sensors based on requirements of the pilot. Along with the on-board the telemetry system, the Ground Control System (GCS) provides first person visual aid on base station. The JavaFx interface is platform independent with features like FPV video streaming in real-time, representation of UAV's altitude, orientation and position at every instance of time. Moreover, the trans-receiver communication allows controlling flight characteristics from the interface, increasing the scope of applications with UAV.

We consider the problem of A/D conversion for non-bandlimited signals that have a finite rate of innovation, in particular, the class of a continuous periodic stream of Diracs, characterized by a set of time positions and weights. Previous research has only considered the sampling of these signals, ignoring quantization which is necessary for any practical application (e.g. UWB, CDMA). In order to achieve accuracy under quantization, we introduce two types of oversampling, namely, oversampling in frequency and oversampling in time. High accuracy is achieved by enforcing the reconstruction to satisfy either three convex sets of constraints related to (1) sampling kernel, (2) quantization and (3) periodic streams of Diracs, which is then said to provide strong consistency, or only the first two, providing weak consistency. We propose three reconstruction algorithms, the first two achieving weak consistency and the third one achieving strong consistency. For these three algorithms, respectively, the experimental MSE performance for time positions decreases as O(1/R/sub t//sup 2/ R/sub f//sup 3/), and O(1/R/sub t//sup 2/ R/sub f//sup 4/), where R/sub t/ and R/sub f/ are the oversampling ratios in time and in frequency, respectively. It is also proved theoretically that our reconstruction algorithms satisfying weak consistency achieve an MSE performance of at least O(1/R/sub t//sup 2/ R/sub f//sup 3/).

To detect violence in a video, a common video description method is to apply local spatio-temporal description on the query video. Then, the low-level description is further summarized onto the high-level feature based on Bag-of-Words (BoW) model. However, traditional spatio-temporal descriptors are not discriminative enough. Moreover, BoW model roughly assigns each feature vector to only one visual word, therefore inevitably causing quantization error. To tackle the constrains, this paper employs Motion SIFT (MoSIFT) algorithm to extract the low-level description of a query video. To eliminate the feature noise, Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) is exploited for feature selection on the MoSIFT descriptor. In order to obtain the highly discriminative video feature, this paper adopts sparse coding scheme to further process the selected MoSIFTs. Encouraging experimental results are obtained based on two challenging datasets which record both crowded scenes and non-crowded scenes.

Localized hardware failures on sensor and communication channel often introduce in digital radiographies a characteristic impulsive noise, known as "salt & pepper". Eliminating these failures, which generate the corrupted pixels, is a very costly or even impossible task; therefore, image processing techniques have been developed to correct the gray level values of these pixels. We propose here a new switching median filter for digital radiography, which has been inspired by the properties of the human visual system: a pulse is detected on the radiography by measuring its visibility in terms of local contrast and signal to noise ratio. The local background value is estimated applying a 3/spl times/3 median filter to the image, and noise distribution is evaluated by means of a simple and reliable model, which describes the properties of the digital sensor and incorporates the statistical characteristic of the noise. Since the filter requires no iteration, it can work in real time also on large images (less than 0.7s for 12 bit, 4.8 MPixel images). The presence of edges does not affect the pulse detection and correction, thus resulting in a more efficient approach with regards to more traditional methods. Some residual pulse may remain visible only in the darkest zones of the radiography, which are usually poor of diagnostic information.

One of the most important functions for the image & video signal processing, machine vision and human-machine Interface or industry application is to process color information, to simulate visual color-sensation or color-specification or color imagery. In addition, color imagery has been investigated using specific pattern samples with the exception of textile specimens for about six decades since the semantics differential theory proposed by Torgerson. And, so far, there are three celebrated color imagery models proposed by Ou et al. (abbreviated as the Ou1 and Ou2 for single color and two color-combinations respectively) and Kuo (as the Kuo) separately. A color psychophysical experiment with 186 fashion-apparel images containing 141 ones in which the fashion apparels are with two-color combinations was conducted, and the experimental visual results were used to estimate the performance of those three models in predicting visual color imagery. The results indicates that although all three color-imagery models tested have better performance in predicting the visual color-imagery of Heavy-Light imagery scale values than those of the other two imagery scale values of Beautiful-Ugly and Various-Steady, on the whole the three models tested still cannot have good agreement between their predictions and visual results of color imagery. Meanwhile, this finding may obviously shows that a more precise color-imagery estimating model still needs to be developed for the fashion apparels with multiple-color combinations.

The paper focuses on a microprocessor implementation of the Hamming distance for binary correlation. It uses the fact that the binary correlation result can be derived from binary convolution (i.e., modeled with AND gates instead of XOR); as a result, convolution of multiple bits with multiple bits can be computed by a single multiplication instruction. This follows from a general proof for base-n convolution that is presented. Furthermore, using a hierarchical shift-addition approach, we can also reduce the number of additions in the subsequent step. The paper also shows that this approach can also be used in the frequency domain where an N/spl times/N point binary circular convolution can be modeled using an N/spl times/M double precision FFT, where M is a sub-multiple of N depending on the kernel size. Comparison of the time/frequency approaches is presented for different kernel/image sizes, with the help of benchmarking results.

Camera-based monitoring is becoming increasingly popular, as multi-objective detection tasks can be enabled by video analytics over captured frames. Yet, video frames have to be delivered to computation-capable edge nodes for further processing, because the amount of required resources exceeds the capacity of built-in hardware of video cameras. In this paper, observing that video resolution directly determines the subsequent bandwidth and computing resource consumption, as well as the analytic accuracy, we propose an edge-assisted object-based resolution configuration algorithm to achieve efficient multi-task video analytics. The proposed algorithm harnesses the diversity of neural networks used for detecting different objects in one frame, which brings about two-fold possibility for bandwidth saving. On one hand, background information cannot be indiscriminately transmitted, as is unlikely to contribute to improving the analytics accuracy. On the other hand, fine-grained resolution selection allows object-level optimal resolution that minimizes the transmitted data volume under accuracy and latency constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively reduce up to 50% of the transmitted data volume, compared to existing benchmarks.

One of the main processes in in vivo maternal haploid breeding method which is widely used in hybrid maize breeding in recent years is the separation of haploid and diploid individuals. Although different approaches have been proposed to make this distinction, the R1-nj color marker is widely and successfully used. The R1-nj color marker allows the visual separation of haploid and diploid individuals during the seed period. Nowadays, this distinction is done manually, causing loss of time and labor as well as high error. In this study, an open access dataset consisting of 3,000 maize seed images was used. The deep features from the FC6, FC7 and FC8 fully connected layers of the AlexNet architecture are classified with the support vector machine. 10-fold cross-validation test was used to evaluate model performances. Experimental results showed that the best classification performance is possible with 89.50% accuracy using deep features obtained from the FC6 fully connected layer.
