An image is often corrupted by additive gaussian noise during its acquisition and transmission. Denoising has to be performed on these images to retain the signal and to suppress the noise. Denoising can be performed by various methods like thresholding, filtering etc. But these methods did not consider the local space scale information of the image. Here a new type of neural network is constructed for noise reduction, where the space scale information of the image is considered. This method gives a good numerical results and also better visual effects. Keywords: Denoising,Discrete Wavelet Transform, Continuous soft thresholding, Least Mean Square rule.

In this paper, we describe a new lossless compression algorithm for color video sequences. Our approach is to exploit both spatial and temporal redundancies in the video sequence by developing a new adaptive algorithm. By adaptive selection between spatial and temporal prediction we show that our scheme is better than state-of-the-art lossless compression algorithms.

Perceptual organization is the process of assigning each part of a scene to a specified association of features to be a part of the same organization. In the twenty century, Gestalt psychologists formalized how image features tend to be grouped by giving a set of organizing principles. In this paper, we propose an approach for the detection of perceptual groups in an image. We are mainly interested in features grouped by the proximity law of Gestalt. We conceive an object-based model within a stochastic framework using a marked point process (MPP). We use a Bayesian learning method to extract perceptual groups in a scene. The proposed model tested on synthetic images proves the efficient detection of perceptual groups in noisy images.

In this paper we describe some of the research issues and challenges in image-based location awareness and navigation. We will describe two systems being developed at Purdue University as test beds for our ideas. The main system architecture combines imageprocessing, mobility, wireless communication, and location awareness. We will describe two fundamental scenarios for using images to aid in mobile navigation problems. The first provides the ability to use a locally acquired image to determine the identity of an object, for example a building, as one roams in an area. The second problem is the use of images in a database to aid in vehicle navigation. The solution to these problems use location information, such as GPS signals, to compare and search location-annotated images in a database. We believe location information can improve the accuracy in image database search.

The use of partial differential equations in imageprocessing has become an active area of research in the last few years. In particular, active contours are being used for image segmentation, either explicitly as snakes, or implicitly through the level set approach. In this paper, we consider the use of the implicit active contour approach for segmenting scientific images of pollen grains obtained using a scanning electron microscope. Our goal is to better understand the pros and cons of these techniques and to compare them with the traditional approaches such as the Canny and SUSAN edge detectors. The preliminary results of our study show that the level set method is computationally expensive and requires the setting of several different parameters. However, it results in closed contours, which may be useful in separating objects from the background in an image.

This paper demonstrates a model-based reinforcement learning framework for training a self-flying drone. We implement the Dreamer proposed in a prior work as an environment model that responds to the action taken by the drone by predicting the next video frame as a new state signal. The Dreamer is a conditional video sequence generator. This model-based environment avoids the time-consuming interactions between the agent and the environment, speeding up largely the training process. This demonstration showcases for the first time the application of the Dreamer to train an agent that can finish the racing task in the Airsim simulator.

This paper addresses the problem of image based localization. The goal is to find quickly and accurately the relative pose from a query taken from a stereo camera and a map obtained using visual SLAM which contains poses and 3D points associated to descriptors. In this paper we introduce a new method that leverages the stereo vision by adding geometric information to visual descriptors. This method can be used when the vertical direction of the camera is known (for example on a wheeled robot). This new geometric visual descriptor can be used with several image based localization algorithms based on visual words. We test the approach with different datasets (indoor, outdoor) and we show experimentally that the new geometricvisual descriptor improves standard image based localization approaches.
