visual Information Systems on the Move Following the success of previous International conferences of visual Information Systems held in Melbourne, San Diego, Amsterdam, Lyon, Taiwan, Miami, and San Francisco, the 8th International conference on visual Information Systems held in Amsterdam dealt with a variety of aspects, from visual systems of multimedia information, to systems of visual information such as image databases. Handling of visual information is boosted by the rapid increase of hardware and Internet capabilities. Now, advances in sensors have turned all kinds of information into digital form. Technology for visual information systems is more urgently needed than ever before. What is needed are new computational methods to index, compress, retrieve and discover pictorial information, new algorithms for the archival of and access to very large amounts of digital images and videos, and new systems with friendly visual interfaces. visual information processing, features extraction and aggregation at semantic level and content-based retrieval, and the study of user intention in query processing will continue to be areas of great interest. As digital content becomes widespread, issues of delivery and consumption of multimedia content were also topics of this workshop. Be on the move… June 2005 Stéphane Bres Robert Laurini

Machine learning and cybernetics play an important role in many modern electronic, computer and communications systems. Automated processing of information by these systems requires intelligent analysis of various types of data and optimal decision making. In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid expansion of research and development activities in machine learning and cybernetics. To provide opportunities for researchers in these areas to share their ideas and foster collaborations, the International conference on Machines and Cybernetics (ICMLC) has been held annually since 2002. The conference series has achieved a great success in attracting a large number of paper submissions and participants and enabling fruitful exchanges among academic and industrial researchers and postgraduate students. In 2005, the conference (ICMLC 2005) received 2461 full paper submissions and the Program Committee selected 1050 of them for presentation. It is especially encouraging that the conference is attracting more and more international attention. This year, there are contributions from 21 countries and 211 universities worldwide. Out of the 1050 papers presented at the conference, we selected 114 papers to be published in this volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

This book is an extended collection of revised contributions that were initially submitted to the International Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval (AMR 2005). This workshop was organized during July 28-29, 2005, at the U- versity of Glasgow, UK, as part of an information retrieval research festival and in co-location with the 19th International Joint conference on Arti?cial Int- ligence (IJCAI 2005). AMR 2005 was the third and so far the biggest event of the series of workshops that started in 2003 with a workshop during the 26th German conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2003) and continued in 2004 as part of the 16th European conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (ECAI 2004). Theworkshopfocussedespeciallyonintelligentmethodstoanalyzeandstr- ture multimedia collections, with particular attention on methods that are able to support the user in the search process, e. g. , by providing additional user-and context-adapted information about the search results as well as the data coll- tion itself and especially by adapting the retrieval tool to the user’s needs and interests. The invited contributions presented in the ?rst section of this book— “Putting the User in the Loop: visual Resource Discovery” from Stefan Rug ¨ er, “Using Relevance Feedback to Bridge the Semantic Gap” from Ebroul Izquierdo and Divna Djordjevic, and “Leveraging Context for Adaptive Multimedia - trieval: A Matter of Control” from Gary Marchionini—illustrate these core t- ics: user, contextandfeedback.
