Barcode detection has been elaborately investigated before. Traditional hand-crafted feature based methods achieve promising performances across some simple and high-quality test databases. However, they usually fall short as a part of barcode decoding pipeline when dealing with challenging scenarios, because of the low robustness and accuracy achieved by low-level features. In this paper, we present a barcode detection network pipeline, designed to generate accurate barcode regions with category labels. We also build a rich barcodes detection dataset-Mixed Barcode Dataset. Experimental results conducted on different barcode databases show the superiority of our method in terms of F-score and decoding accuracy compared to the state of arts.

With joint learning of sampling and recovery, the deep learning-based compressive sensing (DCS) has shown significant improvement in performance and running time reduction. Its reconstructed image, however, losses high-frequency content especially at low subrates. This happens similarly in the multi-scale sampling scheme which also samples more low-frequency components. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale DCS convolutional neural network (MS-DCSNet) in which we convert image signal using multiple scale-based wavelet transform, then capture it through convolution block by block across scales. The initial reconstructed image is directly recovered from multi-scale measurements. Multi-scale wavelet convolution is utilized to enhance the final reconstruction quality. The network is able to learn both multi-scale sampling and multi-scale reconstruction, thus results in better reconstruction quality. © 2018 IEEE.

Weakly supervised semantic segmentation aims at segmenting images by image-level labels. The existing methods try to train an end-to-end CNN network, which needs to handle multiple classes that is difficult. In addition, the existing methods are sensitive to the image-level cues such as discriminative regions and the pseudo-annotations. To avoid these drawbacks, this paper proposes a new strategy, which first obtains the foregrounds of each class by multiple group cosegmentation, and then combines the results to form the semantic segmentation. In our method, three new aspects are considered. 1) we solve semantic segmentation by each class that is easy to handle. 2) we extract discriminative regions more globally by context analysis. 3) we learn local-to-global segmentation network to segment the object from local discriminative priors. A new CNN network for multiple group cosegmentation is proposed. Two subnetworks such as global context based discriminative region extraction network and local-to-global segmentation network are designed. A simple combination method based on the discriminative map is proposed to finally obtain the semantic segmentation results. We verify the proposed method on Pascal VOC dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain mIOU value 0.563 and 0.603 (without CRF post-processing) on the validation and test dataset that outperforms many existing weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods.

Spinal metastases have a high incidence among cancer patients and may later develop to metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC). Early detection of spinal metastases is critical for optimal treatment. The diagnosis is usually facilitated with computed tomography (CT) scans, which requires considerable efforts from well-trained radiologist. In this paper, we explore automatic spinal metastases classification based on CT images. Considering the unique characteristics of spinal CT images, a novel Deep Dual-view Network is proposed which contains two branches: a X-Y Conv Branch to extract the features for each individual cross-sectional image slice, and a Z Conv Branch to capture z-direction features from neighboring images. The features from the two branches are then fused to generate the final prediction, which imitates the doctor's way of combining cross sections with sagittal or coronal sections. Considering a tumor usually presents in multiple consecutive image slices, a smooth loss is introduced to maintain the label consistency of adjacent images. To validate the proposed approach, we collect a dataset of 316 patients with spinal metastases. Experimental results on this data set have demonstrated the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed Deep Dual-view network.

High efficient facial image compression is broadly required and challenging for surveillance and security scenarios, while either traditional general image codecs or special facial image compression schemes only heuristically refine codec separately according to face verification accuracy metric. We propose an End-to-End Facial image Compression (E2EFIC) framework with a novel variable block size Regionally Adaptive Pooling (RAP) module whose parameters can be automatically optimized according to gradient feedback from an integrated semantic distortion metrics, including a successful exploration to apply Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) as metric directly in image compression scheme. The experimental results verify the framework's efficiency by demonstrating performance improvement of 71.41%, 48.28% and 52.67% bitrate saving separately over JPEG2000, WebP and neural network-based codecs under the same face verification accuracy distortion metric. We also evaluate E2EFIC's superior performance gain compared with latest specific facial image codecs.

Precise vehicle retrieval, which means ascertaining all instances for a given query vehicle image, is a challenging task as different vehicles will share the same visual attributes. To solve this problem, a novel color image retrieval method based on improved fast affine matching is proposed, which combines color constants and hue and saturation (H-S) color features of special marks to perform the fine-grained retrieval of images. The proposed method overcomes the influence of illumination variation and deformation on vehicle images. Furthermore, with full use of vehicle annual inspection labels, vehicle retrieval can be separated from excessive reliance on vehicle license plates. We evaluate our proposed method on the ReIDcar dataset, which includes many low-quality vehicle images in a series of experiments, and the large-scale image dataset VehicleID. Experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval rate outperforms other traditional methods, verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to other synopsis methods in the processing speed and retrieval accuracy.

Deep learning to hash has emerged as a popular technique for large-scale image retrieval. Existing deep learning to hash methods seek to solve the single retrieval task within one stream framework or jointly solve the retrieval task and the classification task within two stream framework. Consequently, the semantic information is not fully exploited to generate compact and discriminative hash codes. In this paper, we propose a multi-task learning architecture for deep semantic hashing (MLDH), which incorporates the retrieval task and the classification task within one-stream framework. Specifically, we introduce a COCO loss to learn compact binary codes for the classification task. For the retrieval task, we introduce a pairwise loss to learn discriminative binary codes. Finally, these two tasks are investigated into one-stream deep learning framework. Extensive experiments show that MLDH can outperform state-of-the-art methods on benchmark datasets.

Face hallucination is a specific super-resolution problem which aims to generate high-resolution(HR) faces from low-resolution(LR) input. Recently, deep learning methods have been widely applied in single-image super resolution. Considering face images have great similarities in both pixel value and global structure, we propose a wavelet-based deep learning method with loop architecture for face hallucination. In contrast to existing wavelet-based methods that generate wavelet coefficients independently without considering relationships between them, we propose a three-stage method with loop architecture. This alternately updated loop structure explores the statistical relationships among wavelet coefficients and has a maximum use of information flow with a small number of parameters. Because of multi-resolution property of wavelet transform, we adopt a mixed input strategy to train images with different sizes to realize multi-scale face hallucination without retraining and adding extra subnetworks. Experiments demonstrate that our method can get a robust performance with multi-scale face hallucination.

The automated visual inspection of complexly shaped, stamped sheet metal is a challenging task. Model-based methods are currently state of the art for surface quality inspection based on three-dimensional surface measurements. Data-driven models allow the representation of arbitrary three-dimensional surface shapes including possible tolerances and variation due to deformation. Providing a sufficient amount of training data while ensuring adequate data quality is a time-consuming and laborous process. We propose a data driven three-dimensional surface model for quality inspection that allows the integration of deformation simulation in order to increase variance in training data. The effects of simulated data to the model quality are evaluated and results are given for data sets of automobile sheet metal parts.

We propose a temporal spotting method of a hand gesture from a low-resolution far-infrared image sequence captured by a far-infrared sensor array. The sensor array captures the spatial distribution of far-infrared intensity as a thermal image by detecting far-infrared waves emitted from heat sources. It is difficult to spot a hand gesture from a sequence of thermal images captured by the sensor due to its low-resolution, heavy noise, and varying duration of the gesture. Therefore, we introduce a voting-based approach to spot the gesture with template matching-based gesture recognition. We confirm the effectiveness of the proposed temporal spotting method in several settings.
