Weather classification is getting more and more attractive because it has many potential applications, such as visual systems and intelligent transportation, especially in transportation. However, the researches about it were based weather dataset are designed to be executed in clear weather conditions. And it is challenging tasks due to the diversity of weather cues and lack of discriminate feature. Therefore, in addition to the image features, real-time weather factors is needed to provide additional information. Most existing weather classification methods involve many pre-processing techniques, for instance sky detection and boundary detection, which makes the model highly rely on the performance of the aforementioned steps. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel method for multi-class weather classification. We newly constructed multi-class weather dataset contains 5K images which has more adverse weather conditions. To improve the discrimination of image representation and decrease the influence of pre-processing, our approach combines the real-time weather data with the image feature as the final feature vector to identify different weather. With experiments on our own dataset, we demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Recently, augmented reality technologies are debuting to the mainstream markets. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), which serves as the core to drive augmented reality, enables mobile devices to understand "the reality" by recognizing and understanding the surrounding space. However, enabling SLAM on mobile devices still faces challenges due to computation and power limitations. Thus, this paper explores the microarchitecture design space of visual SLAM. First, we conduct a characterization to make the image signal processing stage in the front-end image acquisition stage configurable and explore SLAM's sensitivity to individual stages. Our characterization shows that only demosaicing, gamma compression, and denoising in the image signal processing process have significant influences on SLAM's accuracy. Thus, the image signal processor in SoC in traditional mobile devices can be replaced by an approximation logic to save hardware overhead and energy. Second, we propose a new CGRA architecture, called SL-CGRA, specially tailored to SLAM's workload characteristics. It features a two-level memory design, which includes data-redirection layer support for on-chip memory, and an efficient CGRA memory controller stacked through Through-Via Silicon (TSV) for highly efficient off-chip memory access. Besides, PEs in SL-CGRA support different execution modes to exploit the data-level parallelism and task level parallelism of SLAM. Our evaluation results show that SL-CGRA achieves good performance and energy efficiency.

The increase of private universities in Peru has multiplied the opportunities of entry to people whose parents did not have access to university studies, who also usually work in parallel to solve their studies and help support their family, so they have greater difficulties of attendance and academic performance due to fatigue produced by work commitments. The present work applies the pedagogical model called Flipped Classroom popularized in 2007 by Jonathan Bergman and Aaron Sams, and which consists of leaving the theory for the home and performing the practice in the classroom under the supervision of the teacher. The experiment was carried out in classrooms of private universities located in North Lima where the highest percentage of students are the first generation. The results obtained show a reduction of 12.4% in absenteeism and an increase of up to 27.7% in the academic performance which was reflected in the students' grades.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is also known as atherosclerosis, a non-communicable disease (NCD) in cardiovascular disease (CVD). The plaques and the calcification embedded in the coronary artery inner wall make the blood vessel area narrow. The standard practice by the radiologists and medical clinical are by visual inspection to detect calcification on the intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) image. In this study, we focus on detecting the calcification present and calcification absent in the coronary artery disease for catheter frequency 20MHz IVUS image using Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) network. The four types images that are Cartesian coordinate image, polar reconstructed coordinate image, Cartesian coordinate warp image with and polar constructed warp image of were used as an input image in this study. The convolutional neural network (CNN) using Directed Acyclic Graph network (ResNet101) together with the three types classifier (Decision Tree, K-nearest Neighbour and Naïve Bayesian) were investigated for the detection of the calcification present and calcification absent. In this work, we used dataset B from MICCAI Challenge 2011 that consists of 2175 coronary artery disease IVUS image where 530 of the images with calcification and 1645 are without calcification to demonstrate our framework. The performance measures such as the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive prediction value and negative prediction value were evaluated and compared with the ground truth provided. The ResNet101 architecture, the four types of images and the three types of the classifier gave good accuracy. © 2018 IEEE.

Automatic image cropping techniques have been developed recently to address the mismatch between the native display and image characteristics, such as resolution, aspect ratio, etc. These techniques usually rely on determining the importance of various regions in the image, or the aesthetic appeal of the final cropped image. In this work, we present a cropping method that combines bottom-up visual saliency and top-down semantic analysis to create a cropped image that best preserves important image content. Experimental results illustrate that the new method outperforms popular saliency-based cropping, which only relies on bottom-up analysis.

The amount of diatoms present in a water resources is used for monitoring environmental conditions and water quality, and studying climate changes. Diatoms are a kind of algae microorganisms characterised on about 20,000 species. Currently, diatomists and experienced-specialists perform diatoms segmentation and counting by visually identifying microscopical structures from a given water sample. Thus, differentiating diatoms among all possible unwanted objects on a sample (debris, flocs, etc.) is a task mainly based on subjective, visual assessment, with limited repeatability and inter-observer agreements. In fact, researchers have a special interest on looking for different ways to perform an automated segmentation, that means a combination of algorithms, techniques and approaches of segmentation, along with identification and classification objectives, according to specific areas of application. In spite of applications, automated diatom image segmentation problem has a high level of difficulty, due to the precision and the accuracy that it requires. In this paper, an automated diatom segmentation approach is presented. The proposed segmentation is based on Scale and Curvature Invariant Ridge Detector Filters Bank (henceforth, SCIRD-TS), followed by a post-processing method for identifying diatoms present in microscopic water sample images. In addition, evaluation based on the sensitivity and the specificity comparative analysis was made between the proposed approach obtained results and an existing Ground Truth of specimens per class. The SCIRD-TS based method and the post processing method are able to segment structures with well-defined edges, whilst a refinement method is required in order to separate diatoms from debris and flocs. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

The retina is composed of ten layers, with the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) being the outermost layer tightly attached to the choroid. With the increased knowledge about the various functions performed by the RPE, the ophthalmologists have a better understanding of the various diseases leading to blindness. In this work, we propose a method to identify RPE region in optical coherence tomography (OCT) visualization of the retina. This paper focuses on detection of RPE region, the non-separated region between the inner and outer hyper-reflective layer (HRL). The proposed method comprises a bilateral filter for speckle de-noising while maintaining layer boundaries. Detection of inner HRL is a prominent research dimension having significant correlation with the human visual acuity. The proposed work validation is done with the ground truths (manually delineated by an expert panel). Evaluation of the proposed method is done on 220 images from 23 patients at different orientation styles with 90.45% correct detections.
