Spatial psychovisual modulation (SPVM) is a new information display technology, which aims to generate multiple visual percepts for different viewers on a single display simultaneously. After the proposal of SPVM, lots of efforts have been made and several applications (i.e., dual-view display system) have been implemented based on this technology. The dual-view display (DVD) system is considered as an effective digital image hiding system based on SPVM theory, but little work has been dedicated to the perceptual quality assessment of DVD system. Up to now, there is no clear and standard method to evaluate the performance of the dual-view display system. It is important for the viewers to see a clear and non-aliasing image when they are front of the screen. Therefore, in this paper, we will build a DVD database and carry out a subjective experiment to evaluate the performance of the DVD system, and then we investigate and analyze the performance of prevailing no-reference (NR) image quality metrics on the particular DVD system. We have a sufficient belief that this paper can supply the guideline for the performance on the DVD system and serve as a good testing bed for future research of SPVM technology.

The state-of-the-art photometric stereo (PS) methods typically apply shading cues on each vertex and represent a vertex normal as a non-linear function of its neighboring vertices, Such vertex-based representation leads to huge computational cost and limits it from processing dense meshes. In this paper, we propose a PS based surface reconstruction using mesh face based representation. In particular, we propose to apply the shading cue on each mesh face instead of each vertex and optimize face normals instead of vertex normals. We develop a two-step approach to solve the surface recovery problem, where we first optimize face normals using shading cues and then update vertices by the optimized face normals, Experimental results show that, compared with the state-of-the-art, such a two-step approach is able to reduce the runtime significantly as well as handling much denser meshes,

As the demand and supply for 3D technologies grows, the quality assessment of stereoscopic content is both demanding and increasingly urgent. This paper proposes a novel 3D images quality assessment (IQA) algorithm which is based on the Binocular Rivalry model and the Summation and Difference model. Both the influence of distorted disparity information on perceptual quality and the binocular rivalry mechanism of HVS are considered in our algorithm. Since disparity map is not utilized in our algorithm, it saves the complex computation of disparity map and improves the robustness of our algorithm. Experiment results shows that our algorithm outperforms well-known 3D IQA metrics on LIVE database and delivers competitive performance on Waterloo database. The cross database validation indicates that our algorithm is stable on different database.

Recently, low-rank representation (LRR) based hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising method has been proven to be a powerful tool for removing different kinds of noise simultaneously, such as Gaussian, dead pixels and impulse noise. However, the LRR based method cannot make full use of the spatial information in HSI. In this paper, we integrate the graph based segmentation (GS) into the LRR, and propose a novel denoising method named GS-LRR. We first use the principle component analysis (PCA) to obtain the first principle component of HSI. Then the graph based segmentation is adopted to the first principle component of 1151 to get homogeneous regions Finally, we employ the LRR to each homogeneous region of HSI, which enable us to simultaneously remove all the above mentioned mixed noise. Extensive experiments on both simulated and real HSIs demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed GS-LRR.

In crops management, monitoring the plants health is an important task that allows early detection of nutritional deficiencies, diseases, pests, etc. that can result on important economic losses. With early detection there are more possibilities to react on an appropriate way to control the problem and assure the quality of the final products. Molecular methods performed in laboratories are a way to confirm the visual inspections on crops but the results can take valuable time. This makes the visual inspection an important task that allows early detection. Computer vision systems are an alternative solution to many problems of daily life. Many methods based on image processing have been developed focused on early detection of diseases and nutritional deficiencies. Specialized computer vision systems can be a support on decision making to appropriate crop management. In this paper, an image processing method to diagnose and classify grapevine leaves with certain level of potassium deficiency is proposed. The proposed segmentation method based on K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) were compared to methods based on histogram. KNN proved to have better results specially when the environment were images are acquired is less controlled. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper, we design an interpolation-directed transform domain downward conversion (ITDDC) to build up a new block-based image compression scheme. This ITDDC is derived from our proposed 2-D padding and performed on each 16x16 macro-block of pixels to convert it into an 8x8 coefficient block, leading to a downward image conversion in the transform domain. More interestingly, the further compression is just performed on the down-sized coefficient block and the reconstruction for an entire macro-block is achieved via the interpolation by using the decoded pixels only locating in some specific positions of it. To make the interpolation more efficient, the pixels participating in the interpolation will be optimized before the compression. The ITDDC-based coding is used competitively with the JPEG baseline coding to compress each macro-block in our proposed compression scheme according to a simple but efficient rate-distortion optimization based criterion. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method gets a remarkable quality gain over the existing approaches.

With the popularity of stereoscopic 3D (S3D) images and videos, many advanced objective quality assessment methods have been proposed to evaluate viewers' Quality of Experience (QoE). Among them, most algorithms take advantages of the disparity maps to extract useful features. On the other hand, deep learning has been one of the hottest research topics during these years, but limited efforts focused on the field in objective quality evaluation of 531) images. In this paper, we propose a S3D image quality assessment (S3D IQA) method based on deep learning In this method, the Convolutional Restricted Boltzmann Machines (CRBM) combined with Factored Third-Order RBM (FTO-RBM) is considered as learning model to extract feature maps from pre-processed left and right images automatically. Then an improved traversal algorithm based on two pooling strategies is put forward to optimize extracted feature maps, which improves the final quality assessment performance significantly. Experimental results show that our S3D IQA method achieves good performance on 3D databases tested.

In multi-view video plus depth (MVD) format, virtual views are synthesized by the compressed texture videos and their associated depth through depth-image-based rendering. In this paper, we consider the setup where both the encoded texture and depth bitstreams experience packet losses during transmission. Different packetization strategies are investigated and a novel strategy is developed to improve error resilience of MVD-based video transmission, where texture data and its corresponding depth are put into the same packet. The size of texture plus associated depth data included in each packet needs to be less than the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU). Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed packetization scheme yields a significant improvement in terms of both texture views and synthesized virtual views quality when fit in H.264/AVC.

Existing perceptual researches on stereoscopic images mainly focus on the threshold of whole image distortion, rather than the effect of texture feature on the so-called threshold of just-noticeable distortion. Obviously, it is unreasonable to use a single unified perception threshold for natural stereoscopic images as the texture complexity typically varies in different blocks of natural images. To solve this problem, we generated an asymmetrically distorted stereoscopic image database with different texture densities and conducted a large number of subjective experiments. A strong correlation between the asymmetrical visibility threshold and texture complexity was revealed from the subjective experiments. Finally, a nonlinear fitting model was designed to uncover this relationship, which can be applied to asymmetrical coding to control the perceived quality of stereoscopic images.

In this paper, given images of Chinese characters, we present an automatic stroke extraction system, which consists of character decomposition, shape matching, cross area extraction and stroke segment combination. First, a character is decomposed into isolated stroke structures according to the connection. Then, we extract shape contexts of stroke structures and find the matched counterparts in a standard database by shape matching. Cross points are computed, and cross areas are extracted according to a proposed adaptive cross area extraction method based on point-to-boundary orientation distance. For a shape structure with the matched structure, we optimize cross point set and combine its stroke segments according to the correct cross point set and combination way of its matched counterpart. For those without matched structures, we propose an angle based stroke segment combination method to combine the segments into a complete stroke. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system achieves high accuracy and demonstrates prominent augmentation on efficiency.
