In this paper, we introduce a tool aimed at supporting deep qualitative analysis of digital comics. The tool exploits language-based technologies to facilitate the exploration of relatively large sets of comics. The core idea is that the specific words used in the comics are both an important element of the analysis and an index to navigate and explore the dataset. The design concept has been validated in a pilot study and the findings provide evidence that the approach meets the needs of qualitative analysts with the potential of improving their practices.

This paper presents a model for the progressive visualization and exploration of the structure of large datasets. That is, an abstraction on different components and relations which provide means for constructing a visual representation of a dataset's structure, with continuous system feedback and enabled user interactions for computational steering, in spite of size. In this context, the structure of a dataset is regarded as the distance or neighborhood relationships among its data points. Size, on the other hand, is defined in terms of the number of data points. To prove the validity of the model, a proof-of-concept was developed as a visual Analytics library for Apache Zeppelin and Apache Spark. Moreover, nine user studies where carried in order to assess the usability of the library. The results from the user studies show that the library is useful for visualizing and understanding the emerging cluster patterns, for identifying relevant features, and for estimating the number of clusters k.

Scatterplots are always employed to visualize geographical point datasets, which often suffer from an overdraw problem due to the increase of data sizes. A variety of sampling strategies have been proposed to reduce overdraw and visual clutter with the spatial densities of points taken into account. However, informative attributes associated with the points also play significant roles in the exploration of geographical datasets. In this paper, we propose an attribute-based abstraction method to simplify the cluttered visualization of large-scale geographical points. Spatial autocorrelations are utilized to measure the attribute relationships of points in local areas, and a novel attribute-based sampling model is designed to generate a subset of points to preserve both density and attribute characteristics of original geographical points. A set of visual designs and user-friendly interactions are implemented, enabling users to capture the spatial distribution of geographical points and get deeper insights into the attribute features across local areas. Case studies and quantitative comparisons based on the real-world datasets further demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in the abstraction and exploration of large-scale geographical point datasets.

Identifying trendline visualizations with desired patterns is a common task during data exploration. Existing visual analytics tools offer limited flexibility, expressiveness, and scalability for such tasks, especially when the pattern of interest is under-specified and approximate. We propose ShapeSearch, an efficient and flexible pattern-searching tool, that enables the search for desired patterns via multiple mechanisms: sketch, natural-language, and visual regular expressions. We develop a novel shape querying algebra, with a minimal set of primitives and operators that can express a wide variety of ShapeSearch queries, and design a natural-language and regex-based parser to translate user queries to the algebraic representation. To execute these queries within interactive response times, ShapeSearch uses a fast shape algebra execution engine with query-aware optimizations, and perceptually-aware scoring methodologies. We present a thorough evaluation of the system, including a user study, a case study involving genomics data analysis, as well as performance experiments, comparing against state-of-the-art trendline shape matching approaches-that together demonstrate the usability and scalability of ShapeSearch.

The retrieval result analysis approaches of existing retrieval solutions tend to be either too simple, provide too few features for exploring retrieval results or are very narrowly focused. We present an enhanced approach that attempts to address these issues and help the wider community to get more insight from their retrieved data. To this end, this paper presents an enhanced graph-based retrieval prototype built on the Collaboration Spotting platform. It combines information retrieval and visual analytics concepts to provide an advanced solution for data retrieval and exploration. It enables users to retrieve information, explore it from different perspectives using a graph representation and perform further searches based on their navigation and selection interactively. Compared to traditional retrieval solutions, a search action in CS can reveal more detailed aspects/techniques when visually analysing the search output. To gain initial feedback, we interviewed five domain experts in related fields. Findings reveal that the developed retrieval approach provides users with helpful ways of exploring search results and provides mechanisms of connecting features that are not explicitly linked otherwise. Furthermore, several research directions and improvements have been identified for future work, which should be addressed. © 2021 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Text annotation data in terms of a series of tagged text segments can pose scalability challenges within the dimensions of quantity (long texts bearing many annotations), configuration (overlapping annotations or annotations with multiple tags), or source (annotations by multiple annotators). Accordingly, exploration tasks such as navigating within a long annotated text, recognizing patterns in the annotation data or assessing differences between annotators can be demanding. Our approach of an annotation browser deals with all of these data and task challenges simultaneously by providing a continuous range of views on large amounts of complex annotation data from multiple sources. We achieve this by using a combined geometric/semantic zooming mechanism that operates on an abstract representation of the sequence of a text's tokens and the annotations thereupon, which is interlinked with a view on the text itself. The approach was developed in the context of a joint project with researchers from fields concerned with textual sources. We derive our approach's requirements from a series of tasks that are typical in natural language processing and digital humanities, show how it supports these tasks, and discuss it in the light of the feedback we got from our domain experts.

The continual growth of big data necessitates efficient ways of analysing these large datasets. data visualisation and visual analytics has been identified as a key tool in big data analysis because they draw on the human visual and cognitive capabilities to analyse data quickly, intuitively and interactively. However, current visualisation tools and visual analytical systems fall short of providing a seamless user experience and several improvements could be made to current commercially available visualisation tools. By conducting a systematic literature review, requirements of visualisation tools were identified and categorised into six groups: dimensionality reduction, data reduction, scalability and readability, interactivity, fast retrieval of results, and user assistance. The most common themes found in the literature were dimensionality reduction and interactive data exploration.

Progress in exploring speech and Parkinson's Disease (PD) has been hindered due to the use of different protocols across research labs/countries, single-site studies with relatively small numbers, and no external validation. We had recently reported on the Parkinson's Voice Initiative (PVI), a large study where we collected 19,000+ sustained vowel phonations (control and PD groups) across seven countries, under acoustically non-controlled conditions. In this study, we explored how well findings generalize in the three English-speaking PVI cohorts (data collected in Boston, Oxford, and Toronto). We acoustically characterized each sustained vowel /a/ phonation using 307 dysphonia measures which had previously been successfully employed in speech-PD applications. We used the previously identified feature subset from the Boston cohort and explored hierarchical clustering with Ward's linkage combined with 2D-data projections using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding to facilitate visual exploration of PD subgroups. Furthermore, we computed feature weights using LOGO to assess feature selection consistency towards differentiating PD from controls. Overall, findings are very consistent across the three cohorts, strongly suggesting the presence of four main PD clusters, and consistent identification of key contributing features. Collectively, these findings support the generalization of sustained vowels and robustness of the presented methodology across the English-speaking PVI cohorts,
