Bloodline: A system for the guided analysis of cardiac 4D PC-MRI data

4D PC-MRI enables the assessment of blood flow velocity vectors of one heart beat. These time dependent, three-dimensional data allow for a comprehensive analysis and contain plenty of information. So far, 4D PC-MRI is used for research purposes. One reason is a lack of standardized, easy-to-use evaluation software, which is crucial for potential application in clinical routine. In this system's paper, we present our software Bloodline, a tool combining advanced visual exploration and analysis of 4D PC-MRI data. We will put emphasis on design decisions and requirements that arose from the close collaboration with cardiologists and radiologists. The tool provides a guided data processing and evaluation workflow. The pre-processing pipeline comprises generic data import, artifact correction, vessel segmentation, surface as well as centerline extraction, cardiac cycle definition, and landmark specification. Bloodline integrates advanced visualization techniques and facilitates a dataset evaluation within ten minutes. Qualitative and quantitative flow analysis methods are provided. The focus lies on the detection and characterization of vortices, which are correlated to cardiovascular diseases. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

visual analytics have an important role in the exploration and analysis of large amounts of data in IoT applications. data visualizations can provide overviews of different aspects of data and user interaction can assist exploration. Recent advances in machine learning and Artificial Intelligence have provided methods that can be used in conjunction with visual analytics to enhance user perception. However, AI methods are often used as "black boxes", making them difficult for end-users to trust. In this paper, a novel visual analytics platform is presented, targeting two goals: a) an architecture for the creation of custom interactive visual analytics dashboards using well-defined components linked to each other, and b) the inclusion of components specifically for making AI methods more explainable. The proposed architecture and components are being used in the context of the AI4IoT pilot within the AI4EU project, which targets air quality monitoring through AI and visualization.

The increasing availability of digital multimedia content has led to the need of new approaches for the analysis of large databases containing video and associated data, for example, subtitles. visualization provides valuable insights of such dataset, complementing approaches solely based on techniques for knowledge discovery in databases and information retrieval. Hence, visual analytics, combining automatic processing with interactive data visualization, has proven to be an effective means to explore and interpret such data. The analysis of news corpora represents a typical task for such a scenario. Domain experts such as journalists and social science scholars require an overview of important topics, the temporal coherence of events, and they should be able to compare different topics. We present a visual analytics approach that aims to support these tasks with automatic video preprocessing, topic extraction, clustering, and dimensionality reduction. Coordinated linked views support the flexible inspection of the dataset and the processed results. We further discuss the application of our approach in a usage scenario, inspecting the dataset of a daily news broadcast of the year 2015.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution 3D imaging of the human retina to understand a variety of retinal and systemic disorders. Commonly, the thickness of segmented intraretinal layers is used to assess the condition of the retina. However, the thickness data are complex and thus, need to be considerably reduced prior to further processing and analysis. This leads to a loss of information and may hinder the discovery of subtle and localized retinal changes, which are important for an early detection of certain diseases. On this account, we propose an enhanced grid-based reduction of OCT thickness data. We adapt established grid types for retinal thickness data and suggest alternative grids that capture more information. We integrate our data reduction approach into a visual analysis tool that supports an automated computation and interactive exploration of different grids. We demonstrate the application of our tool and show how it can be used to support experts in choosing and comparing appropriate grid representations for given OCT thickness data.

This research aims to design a new batik motif design by taking inspiration from the mangrove forests of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency, and designing the application of the design motif/pattern design with the theme of the Muara Gembong mangrove forest to various forms of products. The study was conducted on the mangrove forests of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia. This research uses qualitative research methods, with descriptive research type. data were analyzed using descriptive exploratory analysis, consists of three stages: exploration, design, and embodiment. The Muara Gembong mangrove forest theme in the form of leaves, flowers, and roots is the basis for making a typical Bekasi motif. In addition, the application of pattern designs with the theme of the Muara Gembong mangrove forest to various forms of products, such as Paper Bags, Pillows, and T-Shirts.

Increased capabilities in data storage and exploration provide significant insights for quality assurance in a high volume manufacturing environment. However, these opportunities are associated with great challenges in analytical model development, application deployment, system throughput and reliability assurance. While no commercial software system fully meets the needs of recording head factories in Seagate, a novel strategy named optical inspection with centralized analysis (OPICA) has been developed to detect defects of trailing edges of the recording heads of hard disk drives, and fail the parts when necessary. Leveraging the robust state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technologies, a deep learning based semantic segmentation engine is built using convolutional neural networks for optical inspection. It has shown an improved accuracy to that of visual inspection performed by human. Meanwhile, a high performance computation engine has been built as a Kubernetes cluster with multiple GPU and CPU units. It is able to achieve the target throughput of three million high-resolution images in each day (i.e., 12 TB image data and 35 images per second). With the high fidelity offered by a Kubernetes cluster, the developed applications (image inference engine, preprocessor, postprocessor, etc.) serve as containerized microservices independently. Such an architecture ensures the vertical and horizontal scalabilities according to the computation of each individual deployment, while all deployments communicate through an Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) cluster without human interference. This analytic framework enables Industry 4.0 recording head manufacturing by integrating advanced AI technologies with a robust edge computation architecture. © 2020 Prognostics and Health Management Society. The study of such a complex phenomenon as cancer, which depends on several but unexplored and unclear factors, needs new ways to visualize, analyze and combine different data both on species characteristics and genes function. To this respect, we propose a novel platform, named VarCopy, supporting visual Exploratory data analysis (EDA) in the context of Copy Number Variation (CNV) data. The platform will be publicly available as a web application soon, and is, to our best knowledge, the first tool allowing visual, interactive exploration and analysis of the CNV landscape of multiple species, allowing the identification of new target genes that might be useful for biomedical research.

Processing and exploring large quantities of electronic data is often a particularly interesting but yet challenging task. Both the lack of statistical and mathematical skills and the missing know-how of handling masses of (health) data constitute high barriers for profound data exploration - especially when performed by domain experts. This paper presents guided visual pattern discovery, by taking the well-established data mining method Principal Component analysis as an example. Without guidance, the user has to be conscious about the reliability of computed results at any point during the analysis (GIGO-principle). In the course of the integration of principal component analysis into an ontology-guided research infrastructure, we include a guidance system supporting the user through the separate analysis steps and we introduce a quality measure, which is essential for profound research results.

Generative Design workflows have introduced alternative paradigms in the domain of computational design, allowing designers to generate large pools of valid solutions by defining a set of goals and constraints. However, analyzing and narrowing down the generated solution space, which usually consists of various high-dimensional properties, has been a major challenge in current generative workflows. By taking advantage of the interactive unbounded spatial exploration, and the visual immersion offered in virtual reality platforms, we propose V-Dream, a virtual reality generative analysis framework for exploring large-scale solution spaces. V-Dream proposes a hybrid search workflow in which a spatial stochastic search approach is combined with a recommender system allowing users to pick desired candidates and eliminate the undesired ones iteratively. In each cycle, V-Dream reorganizes the remaining options in clusters based on the defined features. Moreover, our framework allows users to inspect design solutions and evaluate their performance metrics in various hierarchical levels, assisting them in narrowing down the solution space through iterative cycles of search/select/re-clustering of the solutions in an immersive fashion. Finally, we present a prototype of our proposed framework, illustrating how users can navigate and narrow down desired solutions from a pool of over 16000 monitor stands generated by Autodesk’s Dreamcatcher software. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
