Autonomous multi-robot systems, where a team of robots shares information to perform tasks that are beyond an individual robot's abilities, hold great promise for a number of applications, such as planetary exploration missions. Each robot in a multi-robot system that uses the shared-world coordination paradigm autonomously schedules which robot should perform a given task, and when, using its worldview-the robot's internal representation of its belief about both its own state, and other robots' states. A key problem for operators is that robots' worldviews can fall out of sync (often due to weak communication links), leading to desynchronization of the robots' scheduling decisions and inconsistent emergent behavior (e.g., tasks not performed, or performed by multiple robots). Operators face the time-consuming and difficult task of making sense of the robots' scheduling decisions, detecting de-synchronizations, and pinpointing the cause by comparing every robot's worldview. To address these challenges, we introduce MOSAIC Viewer, a visual analytics system that helps operators (i) make sense of the robots' schedules and (ii) detect and conduct a root cause analysis of the robots' desynchronized worldviews. Over a year-long partnership with roboticists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, we conduct a formative study to identify the necessary system design requirements and a qualitative evaluation with 12 roboticists. We find that MOSAIC Viewer is faster- and easier-to-use than the users' current approaches, and it allows them to stitch low-level details to formulate a high-level understanding of the robots' schedules and detect and pinpoint the cause of the desynchronized worldviews.

Inter-well connectivity (IWC) is one of the most significant properties when evaluating the success of a waterflood. This connectivity has been obtained from various physics-based methods such as simulations, tracers and using heuristics and semi-analytical tools like capacitance-resistance model (CRM). Production and injection data are a key piece of information required to compute the IWC. In this study, we present a new method for estimating IWC using signal processing techniques on the wavelet transform of the injection and production rate data. First, the injection and production rates are subjected to multiresolution analysis using the wavelet transform to determine the detail coefficients. The variance of the detail coefficients is then computed and is ready to be processed using various signal processing techniques. Signal processing techniques such as cross-correlation, time lag, Spearman correlation, and Kendal correlation are used to identify the level of relationship between the processed injection and production data in wavelet scale space. Based on the correlation coefficients, a new IWC link parameter is proposed for characterizing the IWC between well pairs. The IWC link parameters between well pairs are then plotted for visual representation. We created several simulation models for multi-well systems, established water-flood patterns, and for randomly placed wells to establish the new IWC link parameter. The resulting injection and production rates were analyzed using the methodology above and the new IWC link parameter is established in terms of cross-correlation coefficient. We also performed several simulations for a heterogenous reservoir to compute and compare the accuracy of the new IWC link parameter. Finally, the methodology is subjected to real field waterflooding, and compared against the CRM results, which shows a good agreement. Despite the growing popularity of knowledge graphs for managing diverse data at large scale, users who wish to pose expressive queries against such graphs are often expected to know (i) how to formulate queries in a language such as SPARQL, and (ii) how entities of interest are described in the graph. In this paper we propose a language that relaxes these expectations;the language's operators are based on an interactive graph-based exploration that allows non-expert users to simultaneously navigate and query knowledge graphs;we compare the expressivity of this language with SPARQL. We then discuss an implementation of this language that we call RDF Explorer and discuss various desirable properties it has, such as avoiding interactions that lead to empty results. Through a user study over the Wikidata knowledgegraph, we show that users successfully complete more tasks with RDF Explorer than with the existing Wikidata Query Helper, while a usability questionnaire demonstrates that users generally prefer our tool and self-report lower levels of frustration and mental effort.

Quartz-pebble conglomerate (reef) horizons of the Witwatersrand Basin are the most important sources of gold (Au) in South Africa. Concentration of gold to economic ore-grades in the Witwatersrand-type gold deposits has been linked to sedimentary processes having operated as principal driving forces. Therefore, in Witwatersrand-type gold deposits, sedimentological data are often utilized to make qualitative assessment of in-situ gold-grade. This paper presents a framework that prescribes a normative and principled analysis of sedimentological data in order to quantify in-situ gold-grades. Its significance is the provision of a scalable process for extracting correlational structures, regardless of the attribute value-types. The framework applies network analysis, and a bespoke clustering algorithm to support visual analysis of spatial correlation between sedimentological data samples. A key result is the preservation of the semantic interpretation of the resulting cluster assignments via a topologically invariant transformation. This is achieved by applying non-uniform weighting to the attributes to emphasize the influence of non-numeric attributes in cluster assignment. Additionally, sedimentological attributes that are strongly correlated with gold-grade are identified by adopting total variance reduction from decision tree regression as a guiding principle. Using this approach, and data collected from a mining company located in the Witwatersrand Basin, spatial correlation structures defined over sedimentological data attributes are reported. As a byproduct, observations that lack spatial correlation with the rest of the data are identified. These isolated observations can inform quality assurance and quality control departments about potential irregularities in the reporting of sedimentological data within exploration and mining companies. © 2019 IEEE.

The ability to manage Big data (BD) is regarded as the main driving force behind organization's development, as well as maintaining its place in the market and of its innovative success. However, when we look on the number of organizations that actually use BD, it is relatively limited for the moment. It is mainly a lack of appropriate approaches, methods and tools targeted at the use of BD, but above all, there is a low level of knowledge about the importance of BD for business. This paper: (i) provides an overview of the context of BD in contemporary business;(ii) discusses the key concepts which underlay the concept of BD, (iii) examines selected methods and tools which are available for BD analysis. Based on the above, the paper then uses the job portals for the ICT market as a case to propose and to demonstrate a specific approach for BD analysis. The results from this study may be valuable for academics and ICT professionals, who search for appropriate methods and tools to manage job portals. This study provides also a value for employees who want to better know about the requirements and needs of the ICT job market as well as for employers who want to recruit more well-oriented candidates.

The novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has raged in many countries around the world. In the process of fighting against the COVID-19, unprecedented large-scale epidemic data have been produced such as case data, spatio-temporal data, public opinion data and so on. The increasingly complex data poses a significant challenge to understand. A two-level interactive visualization system named COVID-19Vis is proposed in this paper, which collects epidemic data from multiple sources and provides an interactive mode of multi-graph linkage. Users can not only easily analyze and interpret the spatial-temporal characteristics and potential rules of the epidemic, but also find the relationship between policy, online public opinion and the development of the epidemic situation. Through a large number of visualization effects and user feedback, the effectiveness and practicability of the COVID-19Vis are further verified.

In this paper, we present the Microsoft Academic Knowledge Graph (MAKG), a large RDF data set with over eight billion triples with information about scientific publications and related entities, such as authors, institutions, journals, and fields of study. The data set is licensed under the Open data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By). By providing the data as RDF dump files as well as a data source in the Linked Open data cloud with resolvable URIs and links to other data sources, we bring a vast amount of scholarly data to the Web of data. Furthermore, we provide entity embeddings for all 210 million represented publications. We facilitate a number of use case scenarios, particularly in the field of digital libraries, such as (1) entity-centric exploration of papers, researchers, affiliations, etc.;(2) data integration tasks using RDF as a common data model and links to other data sources;and (3) data analysis and knowledge discovery of scholarly data.

HiPiler: visual exploration of Large Genome Interaction Matrices with Interactive Small Multiples

This paper presents an interactive visualization interface HiPiler for the exploration and visualization of regions-of-interest in large genome interaction matrices. Genome interaction matrices approximate the physical distance of pairs of regions on the genome to each other and can contain up to 3 million rows and columns with many sparse regions. Regions of interest (ROls) can be defined, e.g., by sets of adjacent rows and columns, or by specific visual patterns in the matrix. However, traditional matrix aggregation or pan-and-zoom interfaces fail in supporting search, inspection, and comparison of ROls in such large matrices. In HiPiler, ROls are first-class objects, represented as thumbnail-like "snippets". Snippets can be interactively explored and grouped or laid out automatically in scatterplots, or through dimension reduction methods. Snippets are linked to the entire navigable genome interaction matrix through brushing and linking. The design of HiPiler is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with 10 domain experts involved in the analysis and interpretation of genome interaction matrices. We describe six exploration tasks that are crucial for analysis of interaction matrices and demonstrate how HiPiler supports these tasks. We report on a user study with a series of data exploration sessions with domain experts to assess the usability of HiPiler as well as to demonstrate respective findings in the data.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that negatively affect the life of patients. ElectroEncephaloGram (EEG) signal is the gold standard for seizure detection. The process of identification of seizures on EEG is extremely time-consuming and is manually done by epileptologists by means of visual inspection. This paper describes an automatic seizure detection method based on temporal analysis of EEG signal by applying data Mining techniques. A software tool, called Training Builder, has been used to analyze the time series data using the sliding window paradigm by extracting numerous features from each temporal window. Nine pairs of temporal parameters L and S, which represent respectively the length and the shift of the sliding window, have been considered; feature selection process for space dimensional reduction, undersampling and oversampling techniques for overcoming the class imbalance problem, Bayesian Networks approach for data modeling have been applied. For each couple L and S, the proposed approach showed excellent numerical results, considering evaluation metrics (True Positive rate, True Negative rate, Precision, AUC). The best trained classifier shows a high percentage of true positives (greater than 98%).
