Recently, there have been several proposals to develop visual recommendation systems. The most advanced systems aim to recommend visualizations, which help users to find new correlations or identify an interesting deviation based on the current context of the user's analysis. However, when recommending a visualization to a user, there is an inherent risk to visualize random fluctuations rather than solely true patterns: a problem largely ignored by current techniques. In this paper, we present VizCertify, a novel framework to improve the performance of visual recommendation systems by quantifying the statistical significance of recommended visualizations. The proposed methodology allows to control the probability of misleading visual recommendations using both classical statistical testing procedures and a novel application of the Vapnik Chervonenkis (VC) dimension towards visualization recommendation which results in an effective criterion to decide whether a recommendation corresponds to a true phenomenon or not.

In this demonstration paper, we present the TBD-DP operator, which relies on existing Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to abstract Telco Big data (TBD) into compact models that can be stored and queried when necessary. Our proposed TBD-DP operator has the following two conceptual phases: (i) in an offline phase, it utilizes a LSTM-based hierarchical ML algorithm to learn a tree of models (coined TBD-DP tree) over time and space;(ii) in an online phase, it uses the TBD-DP tree to recover data within a certain accuracy. Our framework also includes visual and declarative interfaces for a variety of telco-specific data exploration tasks. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed operator using SPATE, which is a novel TBD visual analytic architecture we have developed. Our demo will enable attendees to interactively explore synthetic antenna signal traces, we will provide, in both visual and SQL mode. In both cases, the performance of the propositions will be quantitatively conveyed to the attendees through dedicated dashboards.

Over the course of recent years, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been applied in several different business domains to improve a diverse array of practical applications. For example, handheld RFID readers combined with passive RFID tags are used to perform fast and accurate stocktakes for fashion retailers. However, while this approach enables efficient inventory management, automatic localization of RFID-tagged goods in stores is still an open problem. To tackle this problem, we equip fixtures (e.g., shelves, tables, ... ) with reference RFID tags and use data we collect during typical RFID-based stocktakes to map articles to fixtures. Knowing the location of goods within a store enables the implementation of several practical applications, such as automated Money Mapping (e.g., creating a heat map of sales across fixtures) or visual merchandising evaluations (e.g., monitoring sales of fixtures before, during, and after the implementation visual merchandising strategies). Specifically, we conduct (i) controlled lab experiments and (ii) a case-study in two fashion retail stores to evaluate our presented approaches for article-to-fixture predictions. The approaches are based on calculating distances between read event time series of article and reference tags using dynamic time warping, and clustering of read events using DBSCAN. We find that we can use read events collected during RFID-based stocktakes to assign articles to fixtures with an accuracy of more than 90% in several of our experiments. Hence, in this paper we present an exploratory venture into novel and practical RFID-based applications, beyond the scope of stock management.

With increasing availability of location-acquisition technologies, huge volumes of data tracking transportation system have been collected. These data are highly valuable for unveiling human mobility patterns, transportation system utilization, and urban planning. However, it is still highly challenging to visualize and explore transportation data. In this paper, an interactive visual analytic system, TranSeVis has been proposed. It has two visualization modules, one named region view provides geographical information and effective temporal information comparison, the other named road view provides detailed visual analysis of mobility factors along routes or congestions spots. Besides, two case studies have been used to evaluate the visualization techniques and real-world taxi data sets have been used to demonstrate TranSeVis. Based on the results, TranSeVis offers transportation researchers an easy-to-use, efficient, and scalable platform to visualize and explore transportation data.

This paper presents an overview of the ImageCLEF 2019 lab, organized as part of the conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum - CLEF Labs 2019. ImageCLEF is an ongoing evaluation initiative (started in 2003) that promotes the evaluation of technologies for annotation, indexing and retrieval of visual data with the aim of providing information access to large collections of images in various usage scenarios and domains. In 2019, the 17th edition of ImageCLEF runs four main tasks: (i) a medical task that groups three previous tasks (caption analysis, tuberculosis prediction, and medical visual question answering) with new data, (ii) a lifelog task (videos, images and other sources) about daily activities understanding, retrieval and summarization, (iii) a new security task addressing the problems of automatically identifying forged content and retrieve hidden information, and (iv) a new coral task about segmenting and labeling collections of coral images for 3D modeling. The strong participation, with 235 research groups registering, and 63 submitting over 359 runs, shows an important interest in this benchmark campaign.

Eye tracking has become an increasingly important technology in many fields of research like marketing, psychology, human-computer interaction, and also in visualization. Understanding the eye movements of people while solving a given task can be of great support to improve a visual stimulus. The challenging problem with this kind of spatio-temporal data is the difficulty to provide a useful visualization that can provide an overview about the fixations with their durations and sequential order, the saccades with their orientations and lengths, but also the distances of several fixations in space. Traditional visualizations like gaze plots - showing the stimulus in its original form overplotted with the scan paths - typically produce vast amounts of visual clutter and make a visual exploration of the eye movement data a difficult task. In this paper we introduce the fixation distance plots that place the fixation sequences to a horizontal line of color coded and differently thick circles while showing additional saccadic information. Moreover, the user can apply distance thresholds that indicate if fixations are within a certain distance allowing to get an impression about the spatial stimulus information. We illustrate the usefulness of the approach by applying it to eye movement data from a formerly conducted eye tracking experiment investigating route finding tasks in public transport maps.

The exploration of high-dimensional real-valued data is one of the fundamental exploratory data analysis (EDA) tasks. Existing methods use predefined criteria for the representation of data. There is a lack of methods eliciting the user's knowledge from the data and showing patterns the user does not know yet. We provide a theoretical model where the user can input the patterns she has learned as knowledge. The background knowledge is used to find a MaxEnt distribution of the data, and the user is shown maximally informative projections in which the MaxEnt distribution and the data differ the most. We provide an interactive open source EDA system, study its performance, and present use cases on real data.

Using human fixation behavior, we can interfere regions that require to be processed at high resolution and where stronger compression can be favored. Analyzing the visual scan path solely based on a predefined set of regions of interest (ROIs) limits the exploration room of the analysis. Insights can only be gained for those regions that the data analyst considered worthy of labeling. Furthermore, visual exploration is naturally time-dependent: A short initial overview phase may be followed by an in-depth analysis of regions that attracted the most attention. Therefore, the shape and size of regions of interest may change over time. Automatic ROI generation can help in automatically reshaping the ROIs to the data of a time slice. We developed three novel methods for automatic ROI generation and show their applicability to different eye tracking data sets.
