With the internet, massively heterogeneous data sources need to be understood and classified to provide suitable services to users such as content observation, data exploration, e-commerce, or adaptive learning environments. The key to providing these services is applying machine learning (ML) in order to generate structures via clustering and classification. Due to the intricate processes involved in ML, visual tools are needed to support designing and evaluating the ML pipelines. In this contribution, we propose a comprehensive tool that facilitates the analysis and design of ML-based clustering algorithms using multiple visualization features such as semantic zoom, glyphs, and histograms.

Visuospatial abilities are framed in the capacity of perceiving, acting and reasoning in function of spatial coordinates, permitting to identify visual and spatial relationships among objects. They represent the set of skills conferring individuals the ability to interact with the surrounding world. Whenever spatial cognition is impaired it is important to correctly assess visuospatial abilities. Scientific literature, for this purpose, reports many diagnostic tools that have been adopted by clinicians and neuropsychologists. In this paper we present a prototype that aims to evaluate the visuospatial abilities that are related to how individuals explore their peripersonal space. In particular, the presented tool makes use of tangible interfaces and augmented reality systems. In the final part of this study we describe the implementation of an ecological test for the assessment of visuospatial abilities through our prototype by highlighting its advantage in terms of data collection and analysis.

KM3NeT is a multi-site neutrino telescope under construction in the depth of the Mediterranean Sea, consisting of two Cherenkov telescopes, ARCA and ORCA, both of which are currently in data-taking. Among the primary scientific goals of KM3NeT are the observation of cosmic neutrinos and the investigation of their sources. ARCA and ORCA are optimized in complementary energy ranges, allowing for the exploration of neutrino astronomy from MeV to tens of PeV. The combination of an extended field of view and a high duty cycle of Cherenkov-based neutrino detectors is crucial for detecting and informing other telescopes about interesting neutrino candidates in a very short time. As emission from these sources can rapidly fade, the alerts need to be shared with low latency, in order to allow for a prompt follow-up in the multi-messenger and multi-wavelength domains, particularly for the detection of transient and variable sources. In the case of poorly localized triggers, such as gravitational waves, KM3NeT can provide refined pointing directions, representing a further advantage. This contribution reports on the status of the software architecture implemented in KM3NeT for a fast reconstruction and classification of events occurring in the detectors. Recent technological developments in the fields of positioning and mobile communications gave rise to the availability of massive spalio-temporal open datasets about cities. A proper exploitation of these big datasets by decision makers of smart cities could be very useful to analyse and understand mobility patterns, with the final goal of easing many transportation problems, like parking search and traffic. While many research efforts have been aimed at defining powerful visual analytics tools for exploring vehicular trajectory data, to date almost no specifically tailored tools are available to analyse (on-street) parking data and dynamics. To fill this gap, in this paper we present the current state of an on-going research on the development of a visual analytics tool, meant to support decision makers of smart cities in performing multigranular spatio-temporal explorations of mobility open data, like those about parking. Moreover, the proposed GUI offers the possibility to overlay external spatio-temporal datasets as well as to customize the way this data is rendered, to get a better insight on the parking dynamics and its influencing factors.

BackgroundEnvironmental metagenomics is a challenging approach that is exponentially spreading in the scientific community to investigate taxonomic diversity and possible functions of the biological components. The massive amount of sequence data produced, often endowed with rich environmental metadata, needs suitable computational tools to fully explore the embedded information. Bioinformatics plays a key role in providing methodologies to manage, process and mine molecular data, integrated with environmental metagenomics collections. One such relevant example is represented by the Tara Ocean *** considered the Tara 16S miTAGs released by the consortium, representing raw sequences from a shotgun metagenomics approach with similarities to 16S rRNA genes. We generated assembled 16S rDNA sequences, which were classified according to their lengths, the possible presence of chimeric reads, the putative taxonomic affiliation. The dataset was included in GLOSSary (the GLobal Ocean 16S Subunit web accessible resource), a bioinformatics platform to organize environmental metagenomics data. The aims of this work were: i) to present alternative computational approaches to manage challenging metagenomics data;ii) to set up user friendly web-based platforms to allow the integration of environmental metagenomics sequences and of the associated metadata;iii) to implement an appropriate bioinformatics platform supporting the analysis of 16S rDNA sequences exploiting reference datasets, such as the SILVA database. We organized the data in a next-generation NoSQL schema-less database, allowing flexible organization of large amounts of data and supporting native geospatial queries. A web interface was developed to permit an interactive exploration and a visual geographical localization of the data, either raw miTAG reads or 16S contigs, from our processing pipeline. Nowadays, social networks have become powerful mediums of communication providing information, learning and entertainment. Unfortunately, these platforms can be sorely manipulated by vicious users sharing malicious contents. Therefore, the process of mining and analyzing such published suspicious content is a considerably challenging task that serves to fight against the online radicalization. For this purpose, we propose, in this paper, a new methodology for extracting and analyzing violent vocabulary shared on social networks with the exploration a set of natural language processing and data mining techniques. Our method relies mainly on extracting a set of profiles judged by a domain expert as extremist and non-extremist' users. Then, we focus on their shared textual content in order to detect malicious vocabulary published within the radical context as well as their violence' degrees. Finally, in order to evaluate the performance of our method, we resort to an expert who verifies the final list of the extracted vocabulary annotated by our method. Thus, the given results show its effectiveness as well as its efficiency.

This work examines the use of virtual reality to visualize and interact with three-dimensional graphs. We developed the design to be as natural and intuitive as possible, through analysis, study, and use of several layout algorithms, which allow the nodes of a graph to be positioned to reduce entropy levels. We chose to use this schematic visualization of graphs because it can describe the graphical data synthetically and the links between the data while presenting the data in a visual format. The application was developed entirely using Unreal Engine version 4, and the visualization was performed using the head-mounted display HTC Vive.

ThreadReconstructor: Modeling Reply-Chains to Untangle Conversational Text through visual Analytics

We present ThreadReconstructor, a visual analytics approach for detecting and analyzing the implicit conversational structure of discussions, e.g., in political debates and forums. Our work is motivated by the need to reveal and understand single threads in massive online conversations and verbatim text transcripts. We combine supervised and unsupervised machine learning models to generate a basic structure that is enriched by user-defined queries and rule-based heuristics. Depending on the data and tasks, users can modify and create various reconstruction models that are presented and compared in the visualization interface. Our tool enables the exploration of the generated threaded structures and the analysis of the untangled reply-chains, comparing different models and their agreement. To understand the inner-workings of the models, we visualize their decision spaces, including all considered candidate relations. In addition to a quantitative evaluation, we report qualitative feedback from an expert user study with four forum moderators and one machine learning expert, showing the effectiveness of our approach.

In the recent days, wide range of research has been carried out on visual enhancement of under images in submarine and military operations to discover submerged structural designing and sea floor exploration. But, diving in the deep ocean for a long time has increased the difficulties for analysis of underwater images. Further, other factors such as scattering resulting from presence of particles inside the water and blurring effects reduce the quality of images being captured by underwater optic camera. There are several algorithms have been introduced to improve the visual quality of deep water images. Therefore, in this project, a novel algorithm based on bidirectional Empirical Mode Decomposition (BEMD) to enhance the visual quality of the underwater images will be implemented and comparison of data with conventional enhancement technique will be illustrated. The implementation will be done using MATLAB software.

Scatterplot matrices (SPLOMs) are widely used for exploring multidimensional data. Scatterplot diagnostics (scagnostics) approaches measure characteristics of scatterplots to automatically find potentially interesting plots, thereby making SPLOMs more scalable with the dimension count. While statistical measures such as regression lines can capture orientation, and graph-theoretic scagnostics measures can capture shape, there is no scatterplot characterization measure that uses both descriptors. Based on well-known results in shape analysis, we propose a scagnostics approach that captures both scatterplot shape and orientation using skeletons (or medial axes). Our representation can handle complex spatial distributions, helps discovery of principal trends in a multiscale way, scales visually well with the number of samples, is robust to noise, and is automatic and fast to compute. We define skeleton-based similarity metrics for the visual exploration and analysis of SPLOMs. We perform a user study to measure the human perception of scatterplot similarity and compare the outcome to our results as well as to graph-based scagnostics and other visual quality metrics. Our skeleton-based metrics outperform previously defined measures both in terms of closeness to perceptually-based similarity and computation time efficiency.
