Retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration have become an important cause of visual loss depending on increasing life expectancy and lifestyle habits. Due to the fact that no satisfying treatment exists, early diagnosis and prevention are the only possibilities to stop the degeneration. The protein cytochrome c (cyt c) is a suitable marker for degeneration processes and apoptosis because it is a part of the respiratory chain and involved in the apoptotic pathway. The determination of the local distribution and oxidative state of cyt c in living cells allows the characterization of cell degeneration processes. Since cyt c exhibits characteristic absorption bands between 400 and 650 nm wavelength, uv/vis in situ spectroscopic imaging was used for its characterization in retinal ganglion cells. The large amount of data, consisting of spatial and spectral information, was processed by multivariate data analysis. The challenge consists in the identification of the molecular information of cyt c. Baseline correction, principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were performed in order to identify cyt c within the spectral dataset. The combination of PCA and CA reveals cyt c and its oxidative state. The results demonstrate that uv/vis spectroscopic imaging in conjunction with sophisticated multivariate methods is a suitable tool to characterize cyt c under in situ conditions.

In a previous study (Clarkson 2009), advanced production analysis techniques, including production type-curves and flowing material balance (FMB) were applied to Horseshoe Canyon (HSC) coal wells to establish the applicability of these techniques and to resolve the importance of multi-layer behavior for production analysis. The field examples chosen for analysis included single wells that exhibited production declines analogous to shallow gas wells, with decline in production occurring from day one, and in one case exhibiting transient flow characteristics. There are many more HSC wells that exhibit less straight-forward production characteristics, including flat or even inclining production. These wells have production profiles qualitatively similar to 2-phase CBM wells, yet lack water production. There are several possible explanations for the flat or inclining production behavior, including changing skin associated with near-wellbore cleanup of drilling fluids over time, and increase in absolute permeability associated with matrix shrinkage. Regardless of the cause, these effects need to be accounted for in quantitative production analysis. In this follow-up paper, we continue to perform comparisons between multi-layer and single-layer-equivalent production analysis of HSC wells, but focus on wells that exhibit inclining gas production. We develop a methodology to correct for changing skin in both type-curve and FMB analysis that allows this more complex well behavior to be analyzed. We validate the new methodology using a simulated example, and then apply it to actual field cases. Changing skin and absolute permeability by layer/coal zone was quantified through periodic shut-in/buildup testing of isolated coals throughout the life of the wells, and these dynamic properties were used in production data analysis and analytical simulation. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a well-known method for dimensionality reduction and feature extraction. PCA has been applied in many areas successfully, however, one of its problems is noise sensitivity due to the use of sum-square-error. Several variants of PCA have been proposed to resolve the problem and, among the variants, improved robust fuzzy PCA (RF-PCA2) demonstrated promising results. RF-PCA2, however, still can be affected by noise due to equal initial membership values for all data points. The fact that RF-PCA2 is still based on sum-square-error is another reason for noise sensitivity. In this paper, a variant of RF-PCA2 called RF-PCA3 is proposed. The proposed algorithm modifies the objective function of RF-PCA2 to allow some increase of sum-square-error and calculates initial membership values using data distribution. RF-PCA3 outperforms RF-PCA2, which is supported by experimental results.

We present a system for the interactive construction and analysis of decision trees that enables domain experts to bring in domain specific knowledge. We identify different user tasks and corresponding requirements, and develop a system incorporating a tight integration of visualization, interaction and algorithmic support. Domain experts are supported in growing, pruning, optimizing and analysing decision trees. Furthermore, we present a scalable decision tree visualization optimized for exploration. We show the effectiveness of our approach by applying the methods to two use cases. The first case illustrates the advantages of interactive construction, the second case demonstrates the effectiveness of analysis of decision trees and exploration of the structure of the data.

We introduce a real-time implementation and evaluation of a new fast accurate full reference based image quality metric. The popular general image quality metric known as the Structural Similarity Index Metric (SSIM) has been shown to be an effective, efficient and useful, finding many practical and theoretical applications. Recently the authors have proposed an enhanced version of the SSIM algorithm known as the Rotated Gaussian Discrimination Metric (RGDM)(1). This approach uses a Gaussian-like discrimination function to evaluate local contrast and luminance. RGDM was inspired by an exploration of local statistical parameter variations in relation to variation of Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for a range of particular distortion types. In this paper we out-line the salient features of the derivation of RGDM and show how analyses of local statistics of distortion type necessitate variation in discrimination function width. Results on the LIVE image database(2) show tight banding of RGDM metric value when plotted against mean opinion score indicating the usefulness of this metric. We then explore a number of strategies for algorithmic speed-up including the application of Integral Images for patch based computation optimisation, cost reduction for the evaluation of the discrimination function and general loop unrolling. We also employ fast Single Instruction Multiple data (SIMD) intrinsics and explore data parallel decomposition on a multi-core Intel Processor.

Sensitivity analysis is a powerful method for discovering the significant factors that contribute to targets and understanding the interaction between variables in multivariate datasets. A number of sensitivity analysis methods fall into the class of local analysis, in which the sensitivity is defined as the partial derivatives of a target variable with respect to a group of independent variables. Incorporating sensitivity analysis in visual analytic tools is essential for multivariate phenomena analysis. However, most current multivariate visualization techniques do not allow users to explore local patterns individually for understanding the sensitivity from a pointwise view. In this paper, we present a novel pointwise local pattern exploration system for visual sensitivity analysis. Using this system, analysts are able to explore local patterns and the sensitivity at individual data points, which reveals the relationships between a focal point and its neighbors. During exploration, users are able to interactively change the derivative coefficients to perform sensitivity analysis based on different requirements as well as their domain knowledge. Each local pattern is assigned an outlier factor, so that users can quickly identify anomalous local patterns that do not conform with the global pattern. Users can also compare the local pattern with the global pattern both visually and statistically. Finally, the local pattern is integrated into the original attribute space using color mapping and jittering, which reveals the distribution of the partial derivatives. Case studies with real datasets are used to investigate the effectiveness of the visualizations and interactions.

Tabular data are pervasive. Although tables often describe multivariate data without explicit network semantics, it may be advantageous to explore the data modeled as a graph or network for analysis. Even when a given table design conveys some static network semantics, analysts may want to look at multiple networks from different perspectives, at different levels of abstraction, and with different edge semantics. We present a system called Ploceus that offers a general approach for performing multi-dimensional and multi-level network-based visual analysis on multivariate tabular data. Powered by an underlying relational algebraic framework, Ploceus supports flexible construction and transformation of networks through a direct manipulation interface, and integrates dynamic network manipulation with visual exploration for a seamless analytic experience.

This study adapts existing tools (Jigsaw and a text editor) to support multiple input devices, which were then used in a co-located collaborative intelligence analysis study conducted on a large, high-resolution display. Exploring the sensemaking process and user roles in pairs of analysts, the two-hour study used a fictional data set composed of 50 short textual documents that contained a terrorist plot and subject pairs who had experience working together. The large display facilitated the paired sensemaking process, allowing teams to spatially arrange information and conduct individual work as needed. We discuss how the space and the tools affected the approach to the analysis, how the teams collaborated, and the user roles that developed. Using these findings, we suggest design guidelines for future co-located collaborative tools.

In neuroscience, a very promising bottom-up approach to understanding how the brain works is built on acquiring and analyzing electron microscopy (EM) scans of brain tissue, an area known as Connectomics. This results in volume data of extremely high resolution of 3--5nm per pixel and 25--50nm slice thickness, overall leading to data sizes of many terabytes [Jeong et al. 2010]. To support the work of neurobiologists, interactive exploration and analysis of such volumes requires novel visual computing systems because the requirements differ from those of current systems in several key aspects. In this talk, we describe the system that we are working on to enable neuroscientists to interactively roam terascale EM volumes and support their analysis. A major design principle was to avoid the standard approach of pre-computing a 3D multi-resolution hierarchy such as an octree. data acquisition proceeds from 2D image tile to 2D image tile, where not only the slices along the z axis are scanned independently, but each slice is itself acquired as many smaller image tiles. These images tiles need to be aligned and stitched, and neurobiologists also want to be able to combine different resolutions used for scanning different regions, without re-sampling everything to a single global resolution. Therefore, we focus on working directly with a stream of individual 2D image tiles, instead of a 3D volume that usually is assumed to exist in its entirety for visualization. We perform interactive volume rendering of a "virtual" volume, where the corresponding physical storage is only represented and populated in a sparse manner with 2D instead of 3D image data on the fly during rendering. Furthermore, these 2D image tiles can be of different resolution, scale, and orientation.
