Nucleation phenomena play a crucial role in plenty of atmospheric and technological processes. Being short of efficient visual data exploration tools has given rise to trouble understanding atmospheric nucleation processes. In this paper, we utilize the knowledge of hyper tree visualization to enhance our previously developed web-based visualization and analysis tool that allows remote users to effectively mine the wealth of particle-based nucleation simulation data. Our goal is to speed up knowledge discovery and improve users' productivity through effective visual data mining techniques and more friendly user interface design. Meanwhile, we developed a feasible parallel computing solution to overcome the slow response due to expensive large data pre-processing.

For the VAST 2011 Network Security Mini-Challenge, we adopted geovisual analytic methods and applied them in the field of network security. We used the GeoViz Toolkit [1] to represent cyber security events, by fabricating a simple “geography” of several sets of blocks (one for the workstations, one for the servers, and one for the Internet) using ArcGIS 10 (by ESRI - Environmental System Research Institute). Security data was tabulated using Perl scripts to parse the logs in order to create representations of event frequency and where they occurred on the network. The tabulated security data was then added as attributes of the geography. exploration of the data and subsequent analysis of the meaning and impact of the cyber security events was made possible using the GeoViz Toolkit.

On the basis of a large corpus of wine reviews, this paper proposes a range of interactive visualization techniques that are useful for linguistic exploration and analysis of lexical, grammatical and discursive patterns in text. Our visualization tool allows linguists and others to make comparisons of visual, olfactory, gustatory and textual properties of different wines from different parts of the worlds, from different grape varieties, or from different vintages. It also supports the immediate creation of visual profiles for descriptions of sensory perceptions for exploratory purposes as well as for purposes of confirmatory investigations of linguistic patterns in text and discourse and their correlations to metadata variables.

Underwater acoustic communication can be applicable to many fields, such as oceanic data collection, undersea exploration and development. disaster prevention, underwater environmental monitoring and tactical surveillance. However, it has several challenges to design underwater acoustic sensor networks, for instance, limited bandwidth, multi-path, padding, long propagation delay, high bit error, temporary losses of connectivity and limited battery power. Nowadays many studies are being conducted to overcome abovementioned problems. In this paper, various MAC protocols for underwater acoustic communication are classified by network topology, one is cluster head based MAC protocols and the other one is ad-hoc based MAC protocols. In recent researches, there were not comparative analyses of MAC protocols for underwater acoustic communication according to network topology. So, we summarize and analyze these protocols through comparing each other with some factors. In the future, MAC protocols for underwater acoustic communication will be designed with consideration for each advantage of cluster head and ad-hoc MAC protocols, considering the mobility of nodes to improve underwater acoustic communication, which can be applied to lots of underwater applications.

LONG-TERM RELIABILITY analysis OF A SPAR BUOY-SUPPORTED FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND TURBINE

Most offshore wind turbines constructed to date have support structures for the turbine towers that extend to the seabed. Such bottom-supported turbines are confined to shallow waters closer to the shore. Sites farther offshore provide a better wind resource (i.e., stronger wind and less turbulence) while also reducing concerns related to visual impact and noise. However, in deeper waters, bottom-supported turbines are less economical. Wind turbines mounted atop floating platforms are, thus, being considered for deepwater sites. Several floating platform concepts are being considered;they differ mainly in how they provide stability to counter the large mass of the rotor-nacelle assembly located high above the water. One of these alternative concepts is a spar buoy floating platform with a deep draft structure and a low center of gravity, below the center of buoyancy. The reliability analysis of a spar-supported 5MW wind turbine based on stochastic simulation is the subject of this study. Environmental data from a selected deepwater reference site are employed in the numerical studies. Using time-domain simulations, the dynamic behavior of the coupled platform-turbine system is studied;statistics of tower and rotor loads as well as platform motions are estimated and critical combinations of wind speed and wave height identified. Long-term loads associated with a 50-year return period are estimated using statistical extrapolation based on loads derived from the simulations. Inverse reliability procedures that seek appropriate load fractiles for the underlying random variables consistent with the target return period are employed;these include use of: (i) the 2D Inverse First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) where an extreme load is selected at its median level (conditional on a derived critical wind speed and wave height combination);and (ii) the 3D Inverse FORM where variability in the environmental and load random variables is fully represented to derive the 50-year

The digitally documented world heritage is archived in databases or repositories, where collections of metadata, images, multimedia objects or nowadays even digital 3D artifacts can be stored and queried. Modeling and linking all this information is complex and involves refined categorizations and relations, which are usually accessed by either simplistic or overwhelmingly complex interfaces. Hence, finding the right level of abstraction for a general interface is very challenging. This becomes even more demanding, if in addition to collection exploration, semantic enrichment is required. This work focuses on the design and implementation of an integrated interface, in which four dedicated activities are combined and provided: i) flexible definition of relational queries, ii) browsing of multiple results and query refinement, iii) inspection and analysis of multimedia objects, and iv) building and enrichment of semantic relationships (data paths) between objects. This integrated interface can handle different kinds of multimedia objects, allowing for querying and annotating text, 2D images or 3D artifacts. We present the software design of this interface and the corresponding underlying model in the semantic network. This work is a general step toward interfacing to 3D Linked Open data. © The Eurographics Association 2011.

Uncertainties from aerosol type greatly affects the accuracy in water color remote sensing for case ii waters. An algorithm, depicted as ACCIA, dedicated to define the aerosol types over case ii waters is developed by iterating the four critical component concentrations in an aerosol type: dust like, water soluble, oceanic and soot. A software function module is also developed in visual Studio 2010 by joint programming with visual Basic and visual C++ languages. In situ measured reflected spectrum of Lake Taihu water affected by algae bloom and remotely sensed data by HJ-1B CCD1 are utilized to validate this algorithm. Both spectral curves derived from remotely sensed HJ-1B CCD1 data and Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) are deployed as assessment factors to evaluate the application of this algorithm in the atmospheric correction process. The results show that atmospheric correction using aerosol type defined by this algorithm improves the image quality of HJ-1B CCD1 more obviously than that using standard aerosol types.

It is a laborious process to quantify relationship patterns within a feature-rich archive. For example, understanding the degree of neuroanatomical similarity between the scanned subjects of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) repository is a nontrivial task. In this work we present a Coordinated Multiple View (CMV) system for visually analyzing collections of feature-rich datasets. A query-based user interface operates on a feature-respective data scheme, and is geared towards domain experts that are non-specialists in informatics and analytics. We employ multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) to project feature surface representations into three-dimensions, where proximity in location is proportional to the feature similarity. Through query feedback and environment navigation, the user groups clusters that exhibit probable trends across feature and attribute. The system provides supervised classification methods for determining attribute classes within the user selected groups. Finally, using visual or analytical feature-wise exploration the user determines intra-group feature commonality.

In this work, we present an interactive visual clustering approach for the exploration and analysis of datasets using the computational power of Graphics Processor Units (GPUs). The visualization is based on a collective behavioral model that enables cognitive amplification of information visualization. In this way, the workload of understanding the representation of information moves from the cognitive to the perceptual system. The results enable a more intuitive, interactive approach to the discovery of knowledge. The paper illustrates this behavioral model for clustering data, and applies it to the visualization of a number of real and synthetic datasets.

data mining techniques are becoming indispensable as the amount and complexity of available data is rapidly growing. visual data mining techniques attempt to include a human observer in the loop and leverage human perception for knowledge extraction. This is commonly allowed by performing a dimensionality reduction into a visually easy-to-perceive 2D space, which might result in significant loss of important spatial and topological information. To address this issue, this paper presents the design and implementation of a unique 3D visual data mining framework - CAVE-SOM. The CAVE-SOM system couples the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm with the immersive Cave Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE). The main advantages of the CAVE-SOM system are: i) utilizing a 3D SOM to perform dimensionality reduction of large multi-dimensional datasets, ii) immersive visualization of the trained 3D SOM, iii) ability to explore and interact with the multi-dimensional data in an intuitive and natural way. The CAVE-SOM system uses multiple visualization modes to guide the visual data mining process, for instance the data histograms, U-matrix, connections, separations, uniqueness and the input space view. The implemented CAVE-SOM framework was validated on several benchmark problems and then successfully applied to analysis of wind-power generation data. The knowledge extracted using the CAVE-SOM system can be used for further informed decision making and machine learning.
