This paper presents the concept of Monotone Boolean Function visual Analytics (MBFVA) and its application to the medical domain. The medical application is concerned with discovering breast cancer diagnostic rules (i) interactively with a radiologist, (ii) analytically with data mining algorithms, and (iii) visually. The coordinated visualization of these rules opens an opportunity to coordinate the rules, and to come up with rules that are meaningful for the expert in the field, and are confirmed with the database. This paper shows how to represent and visualize binary multivariate data in 2-D and 3-D. This representation preserves the structural relations that exist in multivariate data. It creates a new opportunity to guide the visual discovery of unknown patterns in the data. In particular, the structural representation allows us to convert a complex border between the patterns in multidimensional space into visual 2-D and 3-D forms. This decreases the information overload on the user. The visualization shows not only the border between classes, but also shows a location of the case of interest relative to the border between the patterns. A user does not need to see the thousands of previous cases that have been used to build a border between the patterns. If the abnormal case is deeply inside in the abnormal area, far away from the border between "normal" and "abnormal" patterns, then this shows that this case is very abnormal and needs immediate attention. The paper concludes with the outline of the scaling of the algorithm for the large data sets.
The massive amount of financial time series data that originates from the stock market generates large amounts of complex data of high interest. However, adequate solutions that can effectively handle the information ...

In this paper, we propose a tool to explore human movement dynamics in a Metropolitan Area. By analyzing a mass of individual cell phone traces, we build a Human-City Interaction System for understanding urban mobility patterns at different user-controlled temporal and geographic scales. We solve the problems that are found in available tools for spatio-temporal analysis, by allowing seamless manipulability and introducing a simultaneous\multi-scale visualization of individual and aggregate flows. Our tool is built to support the exploration and discovery of urban mobility patterns and the daily interactions of millions of people. Moreover, we implement an intelligent algorithm to evaluate the level of mobility homophily of people moving from place to place.

The exploration of multidimensional scalar fields is commonly based on the knowledge of the topology of their isosurfaces. The latter is established through the analysis of critical regions of the studied fields. A new method, based on homology theory, for the detection and classification of critical regions in multidimensional scalar fields is proposed in this paper. The use of computational homology provides an efficient and successful algorithm that works in all dimensions and allows to generalize visual classification techniques based solely on the notion of connectedness which appears insufficient in higher dimensions. We present the algorithm, discuss details of its implementation, and illustrate it by experimentations in two, three, and four dimensional spaces.

In this paper we describe the long term evaluation of the Website exploration Tool (WET), an exploratory system for visualising web data, through the assessment of two Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). VLEs provide log files that can be studied with web mining techniques to understand the behaviour of the students and consequently improve the pedagogy. However, statistical metrics are not always easy to interpret for the educators, which suggests the need to develop novel approaches for the easy discovery of usage patterns. The integration of WET in the assessment process of two VLEs gave us the opportunity to conduct long-term case studies that supported the evaluation of the visual approaches used in our tool. Our main contributions are the description of the benefits of such approaches for the analysis of VLEs as well as recommended features for supporting this task, and a summary of the main findings from our case studies.

Environmental Baseline Study (EBS) in Norway has been carried out as traditional sediment sampling at the planned production site for biological, chemical and physical analysis prior to production drilling according to regulation. The extent of such study should be related to the risk of impact from the planned operations. This baseline can then be used as a reference for future environmental monitoring. Equally important is the contribution to environmental impact assessments defining the measures to eliminate, limit or offsetting the adverse effects that the operation could generate. For the Victoria location, a traditional EBS based on sediment sampling was not considered beneficial due to both anticipated coarse sediment as well as presence of corals at the elevated ridge south west in the area. A comprehensive study including sediment analysis, visual mapping with ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), current measurements and interpretation of side scan sonar data and bathymetry data was therefore applied to meet the challenges at Victoria. The video lines covered more than 130 km of sea bed and the interpretation enabled categorisation of the seabed in soft bottom, rocks and reef building corals. Still photos and HD videos of the major corals structures were used to identify the dominant species and assess their health status (dead, poor, live). Results were transferred to a GIS to define the optimal position of anchoring corridors minimising interference with sensitive ecosystems. The combination of the different methods used in the EBS gives a thorough coverage of the area. The amount and quality of data gathered also beyond the location of the appraisal well location, allow a proper assessment of the sensitivity of the area at the field scale. Based on the experiences gained, it is recommended that future monitoring in areas comprising different habitats (soft bottom, rocky habitat etc.) apply different dedicated monitoring methods. For the visual monitoring a r
